What's unique about the brand

HSU Research is a hifi brand born from Dr. Poh Ser Hsu's passion for bass, starting with a seven-foot-tall subwoofer experiment that played notes beyond human hearing. Their VTF series features variable tuning technology that lets users switch between maximum output and maximum extension modes for both home theater and music, while their speakers use coaxial drivers for evenly dispersed sound and specialized woofers to solve common midrange issues.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • HSU Research directly sells their products, allowing them to offer exceptional performance for the price compared to traditional retail brands.
  • They provide a wide array of tuning options (EQ modes, Q control, variable port configurations) to tailor the sound to different room sizes, personal preferences, and system setups.
  • HSU Research subs are known for their excellent customer service, including a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and lengthy warranties, showcasing their commitment to customer satisfaction.
  • The brand offers sealed and ported subwoofer designs, each with distinct sonic characteristics and the ported offerings with flexible tuning, catering to diverse listening habits and room acoustics.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "The punch on kick drums was concussion-inducing, and the buzz from the bass lines could be felt in the chest. 'Anatomy,' as reproduced by the ULS-15 mk2, is a positively visceral experience at high volumes." (https://www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/hsu-uls-15-mk2)
  • "Most subwoofers don't dig down to 16Hz, but some pipe organs do, and I normally excuse their inability to fully catch those lowest notes by saying most pipe organ performances don't have content that digs that low, but the VTF-TN1 needs no excuses. It can reproduce the lowest notes of these massive organs with exuberance." (https://www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/hsu-vtf-tn1-1)
  • "The HB-1 MK2's midrange is a real treat, for it is virtually without color and as close to neutral as I think I've heard at this price point and even several clicks above. The upper midrange is so organic and textural that it manages to put to shame a lot of other quality bookshelf speakers costing three and even five times as much." (https://hometheaterreview.com/hsu-research-hb-1-mk2-bookshelf-loudspeaker-reviewed)
  • "The CCB-8s brought this enormous ensemble of performers into my family room with visceral power and precision. The sound was larger than life." (https://www.audioholics.com/bookshelf-speaker-reviews/ccb-8-bookshelf)
  • "The resounding polyphonic depth in the track "Catacombae" became a palpable experience that seemed to go beyond mere sound. The Tonehalle Concert Hall was given its due sense of grandeur by the VTF-2 mk5, and, although I have not been there myself, I would like to think that the VTF-2, abetted by the rest of the sound system, brought the Tonehalle Concert Hall to me." (https://www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/hsu-vtf-2-mk5)
  • "Speaking of sublime, the HB-1 MK2's soundstage is stunning and better in my room than even my reference Bowers & Wilkins. The air, detail, dynamics and three-dimensionality found in the HB-1 MK2's soundstage is simply amazing and one of the speaker's best attributes." VTF-TN1

  • Positioning: A compact subwoofer designed for entry-level audiophiles and small room setups.
  • Description: Offers a straightforward design with a driver optimized for controlled bass in tight spaces, making it a practical choice for casual listeners on a budget. Compared to other models in the lineup, it has fewer advanced processing features and lower power output, which suits users who need basic functionality without the extra cost found in the higher-end products.

VTF-2 MK5 Subwoofer

  • Positioning: A mid-range subwoofer crafted for home setups seeking balanced performance and reliability.
  • Description: Features driver-coupling and tuned cabinet design that delivers smooth, even bass for medium-sized spaces. In comparison to the entry-level TN1 and the flagship VTF-3 model, it strikes a balance by offering improved output and clarity while keeping functionality straightforward for typical home use.

ULS-15 MK2 Subwoofer

  • Positioning: A professional-grade subwoofer engineered for larger rooms and more demanding sound applications.
  • Description: Uses advanced signal processing and precise acoustic tuning to deliver tight, controlled low frequencies. When compared with the mid-level VTF-2 and the flagship VTF-3, it offers a higher output and refined bass control for professional applications without reaching the extreme feature set of the top model.

VTF-3 MK5 HP Subwoofer

  • Positioning: A high-end subwoofer built for advanced audio systems that demand top performance and extensive control.
  • Description: Features state-of-the-art amplification paired with high-performance digital signal processing to deliver precise, deep bass ideal for large rooms and critical listening environments. Relative to the entry-level TN1, mid-range VTF-2, and even the ULS-15, it stands out with superior build quality and advanced tuning.

REL is widely recognized as the premier audiophile-grade subwoofer manufacturer, focusing exclusively on designing subwoofers that match the speed and clarity of high-end loudspeakers. Their higher-end models are specifically designed to integrate seamlessly with audiophile speakers, enhancing the soundstage and instrument separation rather than simply adding bass impact.

About the brand

Velodyne Acoustics pioneered the High-Gain Servo system that reduced bass distortion to less than 1% at 105 dB SPL, and holds more patents in subwoofer technology than any other manufacturer. The company introduced the world's first digital subwoofer with DSP technology in 2003, and their Digital Drive Room Bass Equalization System corrects room acoustics for optimal bass performance.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Digital High-Gain Servo Control

Velodyne was a pioneer in integrating real-time servo-feedback control in subwoofers. This patented technology uses an accelerometer to monitor and correct the diaphragm's movement with extreme precision, reducing distortion to less than 0.5%. This level of accuracy results in exceptionally clean, accurate bass even at high output levels, something most competitors can’t achieve.

Auto-EQ Plus Room Calibration

We also stand out with our Auto-EQ Plus system, which adapts the subwoofer’s output to the acoustics of any given room. Using a microphone for measurement, the system automatically adjusts the bass response for optimal performance, eliminating the need for complex manual adjustments.

What's your approach to customer support?

Customer support is extremely important to us. In most cases, customers should reach out to their local dealer or distributor first; they are trained to assist and provide fast, local solutions. However, our service team in Germany is always available for direct assistance when needed. We offer in-house repairs, spare parts (even for many legacy models), and we try to go above and beyond with trade-in options and consultation to keep Velodyne Acoustics products performing for decades.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

"Royals" by Lorde (for tight, controlled bass dynamics)

"Why So Serious?" by Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight OST) (for deep extension and subsonic detail)

"No Sanctuary Here" by Chris Jones (for weight and rhythm in lower registers)

What other products pair best with yours?

We often see fantastic synergy with Wilson Audio speakers. Their clarity and dynamic range complement our fast, articulate subwoofers beautifully. For two-channel and home cinema alike, it’s a powerful match.

About the brand

JTR Speakers designs hifi speakers and subwoofers that use large waveguides and coaxial compression drivers to achieve extremely high output levels with minimal power, with models like the Noesis 212HT reaching 101 dB sensitivity and handling over 1300 watts. Their speakers and subwoofers, built with Baltic birch plywood instead of typical MDF, are known for delivering deep bass and precise imaging at high volumes, making them particularly suited for both home theater enthusiasts and audiophiles who demand maximum performance.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

There isn't really anything on the market like ours. We're combining end high, audiophile speaker technology with concert speaker technology to give people the best of both worlds. There are some companies selling pro audio type speakers for home theater but they not incorporating ultra-high-end components like we are. The company KEF makes some really nice point source speakers which are acoustically similar having a concentric mid and high frequency devices. The JTR's will provide all the detail but then also much more dynamic capability. Our speakers are voiced natural and neutral so they aren't recessed but also not forward sounding.

What's your approach to customer support?

Email support direct via JTR Speakers or call/email support via dealer networks.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Jeff likes Hotel California, but we usually demo with home theater content to show the dynamics of our speakers.

What other products pair best with yours?

JBL Synthesis is likely the closest match tonality.
