McIntosh is the amplifier with the blue meters, the hifi brand people outside the hobby are most likely to recognize, built in Binghamton, New York since 1951. Its amplifiers use McIntosh's own autoformers, which let them drive a wide range of speakers whatever their impedance, and the house sound is warm and full in the midrange, closer to a tube amplifier than most solid-state designs. The company still builds tube amplifiers too, the MC275 among them, and the glass front panels are lettered from behind so the printing never wears.

MartinLogan's idea is the CLS, or curvilinear line source, electrostatic panel, curved horizontally so high frequencies fan out across the room instead of beaming. The American company was started in Lawrence, Kansas, by Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland, whose middle names make up the brand. Its hybrid models pair the panel with powered woofers blended by DSP, and Anthem Room Correction can fit the bass to the room. Listeners who prefer cone speakers can choose the Motion series, built around Folded Motion tweeters.

Klipsch's idea is the horn, built on its founder's rule that a more efficient speaker produces less distortion. Paul W. Klipsch started the American company in 1946 with the Klipschorn, and the Heritage models, from the Heresy IV to the Klipschorn AK6, are still hand built to order at his original factory in Hope, Arkansas. Their efficiency makes them a natural match for low-powered tube amplifiers, and the Heresy IV heads our Best Speakers for Tube Amps list. The Fives are powered speakers with a phono input, so a turntable plugs straight in.

Polk's idea is to carry technology from its flagship speakers down into affordable ones. The American company was started in Baltimore in 1972 by Matthew Polk, Sandy Gross and George Klopfer, and it still engineers its speakers there. Its signature technology is SDA, or Stereo Dimensional Array, which addresses the crosstalk between the ears that narrows a stereo image, and the Legend L800 uses it. The Reserve series brings Legend acoustic technology to more affordable models. Owners who want sound outdoors can look at the Atrium 6.

  • The brand provides a family-owned business experience, with readily available support and a direct connection to the designers, emphasizing long-term product viability and customer care.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Technologically, two standout innovations set VPI apart:

Our use of 3D printing technology and our proprietary 3-phase BLD motor and processing system. The 3D-printed tonearms represent a major leap forward in precision, damping, and performance—offering sonic benefits that traditional manufacturing struggles to match. Our 3-phase motor system, paired with advanced control processing, delivers superior speed stability and vibration isolation. Both are significant engineering achievements in turntable design and performance.

From a broader philosophy, what truly differentiates us is our identity—we're a family-owned company, still run by the original family, now heading into a third generation. Every table is made in America, built by a small but dedicated team, and reflects a hands-on, personal commitment to craftsmanship and legacy that's hard to find today.

What's your approach to customer support?

We always recommend that customers first reach out to their original retailer—dealer or distributor—as they are often the quickest path to help. However, if the dealer is unavailable or the issue goes beyond their scope, we're absolutely here and ready to jump in.

Customers can contact us directly by email or phone, and we do our best to respond as quickly as possible. What sets us apart is our commitment to hands-on support—if needed, we'll FaceTime or Zoom with customers to walk them through setup, troubleshooting, or fine-tuning. We've even invited customers to the factory when they're nearby. We take support personally because we take our customers personally—when you buy a VPI, you're part of the family.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

  1. Take Five – Dave Brubeck: The rhythm, the horn work, and the overall layering make this an ideal track for evaluating instrumental balance and clarity. Personally, it holds a special place—it was a favorite of mine and my wife back when we were dating, and my father, Harry Weisfeld (VPI's founder), used it to teach me about soundstage and timing. It's both a sentimental and technical go-to.
  2. Dr. Ackbar – Bob and Ray's Stereo Spectacular: This is a wild, lesser-known gem. It's a spoken-word journey through a castle/laboratory that plays with spatial cues and stereo effects in a way that's perfect for system testing. When your setup is dialed in, you should feel like you're physically in the space—with voices and effects coming from pinpoint locations around you.
  3. 64 Dodge – Greg Brown: This track gives me everything I need when checking a system—vocals, guitar tone, and fine detail. I grew up listening to it, so I know exactly how it should sound. When something's off, I can hear it immediately; when it's right, this track just sings.

What other products pair best with yours?

Tough to pick just one, but Nordost cables are often paired with VPI by both customers and retail partners—and for good reason. The synergy between Nordost and our turntables brings out incredible detail and clarity. That said, two standout system pairings we've seen a lot this past year include:

System 1:

  • VPI Industries
  • VAC Amplifiers
  • Acora Speakers
  • Cardas Cables

System 2:

  • VPI Industries
  • Audio Research
  • Wilson Audio
  • Nordost Cables

Each of these combinations delivers a beautiful blend of musicality, precision, and dynamic range—exactly what analog lovers are chasing.

As for as tech breakthroughs, we have our patented DPC array: a tweeter inside two midranges. This improves sensitivity and dynamics through such light drivers (3g or less).

Across our entire line, you’re getting 3D soundstaging, detail, dynamics, and low distortion. Most noticeable to the listener is the way sound propagates throughout the room: we focus on a wide dispersion left and right, and slightly limit it top to bottom to minimize first reflections on the floor and ceiling. This makes the speakers easier to place.

As you move up price in our line, the extent to which we do this passive beamforming on the vertical axis descends into a lower and lower frequency.

Perlistens are generally not difficult to run. Take the S7t for example: High 80s, low 90s sensitivity. That can run with anything. But, because Perlistens can play so loud, they do like a lot of power to fully show off.

Two brands we generally pair Perlisten with: On the upper end is Audioflight from Italy. On the budget friendly end, Primare. But they've been paired with so much—we haven't come across a pairing they don't work with unless it's a 3W triode tube amp due to insufficient power.

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Our greatest asset to innovation and quality can be summed up with in-house design and manufacturing. With a unique understanding of all of the technologies involved in designing a DAC, we are able to craft the world's most advanced ladder DAC technologies with the Cascade's MKII Hybrid DAC Modules. No part is left to external vendors or agencies who wouldn't fully grasp or value our same focus on performance.

You can take a virtual tour of our complete in-house manufacturing facility on our website, and see the care that goes it making every product we craft: https://msbtechnology.com/about-msb/

What's your approach to customer support?

Our patrons should contact their local dealer first and foremost with any needs. That being said, the MSB owners are always directly available through our website contact form or on our dedicated forum. We are a small group of designers and engineers and have decided to remain directly accessible for questions and audio discussions. Our down to earth approach means joining a community first and foremost when you become an MSB owner. For any support or service related inquiries, we have a direct form on our website: https://msbtechnology.com/support/repairs/

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

We test and listen to a very diverse set of music while developing products. These are perhaps not the best showcase, but If I had to pick three tracks that I am currently enjoying while developing the Sentinel DAC, they would be the following.

  • Your Power - Billie Eilish
  • The Line - Twenty One Pilots
  • I See Fire - Ed Sheeran

I really do listen to what I am enjoying first and foremost and ensure the system is feeling emotional and impactful. The best music to showcase is the music you enjoy! Our products showcase it all.

What other products pair best with yours?

I always love to promote pairing our system with the most revealing loudspeakers possible. We have been having great success with the Estelon Forzas and the Magico M2's.

Legacy Audio is an American speaker maker, started in 1983 by Bill Dudleston, who still designs its speakers. Every cabinet is made in Springfield, Illinois, CNC-milled from high-density MDF up to 2.25 inches thick and braced above and below each driver compartment. Crossover coils are wound by hand in-house, and every pair is tuned to a master curve, then matched until one speaker nearly cancels the other with its polarity inverted. The powered models have amplifiers built in, so they can play without a separate power amplifier, and the Aeris XD adds DSP.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

One thing that distinguishes us from other manufacturers is our craftsmanship. Open the amp or preamp up and it’s pretty obvious when compared to our competition. We also price according to a formula rather than what the market will bear, so our equipment tends to be less expensive. Of course, we are well known for our OTLs. We have also embraced balanced line operation longer than anyone else in high-end audio with the first balanced line preamps ever made for home audio.

What's your approach to customer support?

We handle customer support directly if we can. It’s nice if a dealer can do it for us, but quite often they get in over their head, so we recommend the customer contact us directly if at all possible. We stand behind our products and support amps and preamps we made a long time ago with an update program that allows the older product to meet the specs of the new with a new warranty. We’re not picky about the length of the warranty and have warranted equipment that was well out of the regular warranty period.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

I like to play a variety of tracks to show off our gear. We made a recording called Canto General which, because I was there, I like to use as a reference since it will tell me how well a system is imaging, how well it’s handling voices and bass, as well as dynamic contrast. We issued it on LP and CD. The CD is still available, but the LP was only 1,000 pressed and sold out a long time ago. Otherwise, I like to play stuff that shows off the bass. One recording I use for that is Remotion by Global Communication. Female voice is often requested at shows, so I might put on something by Pentangle on the TransAtlantic label, or The Secret Garden by the John Renbourn Group.

What other products pair best with yours?

Our MA-2s get used a lot with Sound Lab ESLs. The M-60s get used a lot with older Quad ESLs and horn systems. Our preamps work nicely with most power amps that have a true balanced input, like Pass Labs.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Not sure about technological innovations, as my products unashamedly use old-school tech (valves and R-2R DAC chips), but strong opinions would be:

  1. I prefer electronics that have minimal signal processing, i.e., DACs without oversampling and digital reconstruction filters, and amplifiers that do not use negative feedback.
  2. I believe that power supply quality is very, very important and can often define the product’s sound.

What's your approach to customer support?

Direct contact with me. Fast reply, advice on how to get the best from my products or solve technical issues. Quick turnaround with updates on progress of any repair or service issues. I have been in the audio industry for over 35 years as a dealer, manufacturer, designer, service engineer, and just about everything else. Clients get the benefit of that experience when they buy from me.

  • They developed the PLink interface which is a proprietary high-quality optical link for transporting the digital signal between Playback Designs components while maintaining galvanic isolation.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We do not use any standard DAC chip solution from the open market, but rather developed our own proprietary conversion algorithms and programmed them into general FPGA processors that are field upgradeable. In other words, every improvement or change in algorithms can be downloaded from our website and loaded into our products, all by the end user. More details are here.

For one of the most critical components in any DAC we, again, are not using any standard technology, but rather developed a very unique and proprietary algorithm that takes into account the very sensitive properties of our human hearing system and they way it perceives clock jitter. More details here.

When we were part of the DSD creation team at Sony we were tasked with a very challenging project: the definition of a high speed digital communication protocol that would support any PCM and DSD format (i.e. sample rate). This link should be able to transmit any audio data from any source to a DAC. The solution I came up with is based on a high speed fiber optic data link as it is used in super high speed data links where secure data recovery at the receiver is crucial. While the speed of transmitting audio data is well and way below the capability of such fiber optic links I still chose this physical link because of its superb data and clock integrity / stability. In addition the fiber optic media provides a galvanic separation between digital source and core DAC circuitry. This alone already results in an audible improvement. All our products support this link and we call it PLINK. We use it to connect external transports, servers or USB interfaces to our DACs.

What's your approach to customer support?

We see customer support as an opportunity to show to the customer who we are and how much we care. Usually, I answer all inquiries and customer support requests personally, within 24 hours and with as much technical info as possible. While some of our dealers possess good technical know-how and are able to interact with customers on that level directly, other distributors do not provide any technical support. Either way we encourage customers to contact us directly for any help.

I often get feedback from customers that this kind of direct and expert support ultimately convinced them to buy our products. So obviously the way we do it is not standard in our industry.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

There are many excellent recordings that can demonstrate the behavior of our of DACs, but it is mostly a function of the listener's taste in music. For instance, people who do not like classical music do not hear its finesses when played on our equipment etc. For my own personal taste I often use any DSD re-mastered track of Pink Floyd or Roger Waters. This is also because most of these tracks were mastered using my designs and with that they show off specifically the "analog-like" behavior during transients of our DACs and the resulting 3-dimensionality of the sound stage.

What other products pair best with yours?

As a digital "pure-bread" listener I do not use analog sources myself and only our own electronic designs (including amplification) for playback paired with a variety of different loudspeakers from mid-size to professional near-field monitors. The latter are usually more revealing and neutral than most consumer or audiophile speakers, but are only suitable in small studio environments. Over the years I have been working closely with brands such as Hafler (professional speakers), Evolution Acoustics, Stenheim and many speaker manufacturers.

Koss is an American headphone maker, and its SP/3 of 1958 was the world's first stereo headphone. Founder John C. Koss invented it as an accessory to a portable stereo record player, and it was the hit of a Wisconsin audio show. In 1968 Koss released the ESP/6, the first self-energizing electrostatic headphone. The ESP/950 comes as a complete system with its own energizer, so it needs no separate amplifier. The PRO4AA dates from 1970 and is still in the range, and many models carry a limited lifetime warranty.

  • Every Rockport loudspeaker is individually measured and fine-tuned, with crossovers being tweaked to match specific drivers ensuring consistent performance across all units.
  • The brand emphasizes that their designs deliver exceptional scale and dynamic ease, even in smaller models, offering a more significant sense of realism than expected for their size.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

For us, everything comes down to three main elements: the enclosure, the drivers, and the crossover. We push each of those as far as possible.

We’re one of the few high-end companies that designs and builds our own drivers completely from scratch. That means we control every aspect of performance. Our drivers have the lowest distortion of any we know of in the loudspeaker industry. The carbon-fiber sandwich midrange and woofer cones, paired with 100% beryllium tweeters, behave like perfect pistons well beyond their operating range. The result is an incredibly clean, natural sound with no added noise or coloration.  The moving parts in our drivers are ultra-light and nearly friction-free, powered by extremely strong motor systems—similar to a lightweight sports car with immense torque. That balance allows the speaker to deliver explosive dynamics while revealing the smallest musical details, the subtle cues that make recorded music feel alive.

Each crossover is individually calibrated to the specific drivers it’s paired with. It’s the only way to ensure every pair of loudspeakers meets our reference standard within a quarter of a decibel. We’re the only company we know of that goes to that level, and it’s a big reason we build a limited number of speakers each year.

Finally, our DAMSTIF™ enclosure designs are without question the stiffest, most massive, and well-damped in the world. They’re so inert that they contribute nothing to the sound, no matter the frequency or volume. This total absence of cabinet coloration results in extraordinary clarity across the entire frequency range, along with the blackest possible background.

In the end, all that engineering comes down to one goal: getting out of the way of the music. The less the speaker adds, the more you hear exactly what the artist intended.

What's your approach to customer support?

All of our speakers are designed to be easily serviced in the field. If there’s ever an issue, such as a blown driver or a system mishap, we can usually work with the customer’s local dealer to take care of it right at home. It’s rare that anything needs to come back to us for repair.

We take a lot of pride in the fact that we can service every single speaker we’ve ever built in our 35-plus-year history. We’ve never left a customer without support. We keep a deep inventory of parts and can bring any Rockport back to its original performance.

That kind of long-term commitment has always been part of who we are. We think of our products as once-in-a-lifetime purchases—built to last, to be cherished, and eventually passed down to the next generation.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

That’s always changing, but lately we’ve been spinning:

• “Ta Confiance” – Kham Meslien

• “Antigravity” – Sohn

• “Whiskey and You” – Chris Stapleton

Each track brings out something different. Kham Meslien’s music has this deep, organic tone and sense of space. Sohn’s production pushes a system’s layering and control. And Chris Stapleton’s voice cuts straight to the heart. When a system gets all of that right, you stop thinking about sound and just get lost in the performance.

What other products pair best with yours?

We design our speakers to work beautifully with a wide range of electronics and test them with many different systems to be sure. Right now, that includes equipment from AudioQuest, CH Precision, D’Agostino, dCS, Doshi, Gryphon, HRS, Shunyata Research, Soulution, and Transparent Audio.

All of these companies share a similar mindset: total dedication to performance and musical honesty. When you combine components built with that kind of care, the whole system disappears—and the music takes over.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

There isn't really anything on the market like ours. We're combining end high, audiophile speaker technology with concert speaker technology to give people the best of both worlds. There are some companies selling pro audio type speakers for home theater but they not incorporating ultra-high-end components like we are. The company KEF makes some really nice point source speakers which are acoustically similar having a concentric mid and high frequency devices. The JTR's will provide all the detail but then also much more dynamic capability. Our speakers are voiced natural and neutral so they aren't recessed but also not forward sounding.

What's your approach to customer support?

Email support direct via JTR Speakers or call/email support via dealer networks.

LINKWITZ speakers take the room out of the equation. No room treatment necessary, no DSP "room correction" necessary (as demoed on AXPONA2025). This is possible because these are full range dipoles (not only open baffle speakers , which end being dipoles at around 1-2kHz) . This benign radiation pattern allows a wide "sweet area" to enjoy a believable soundstage, that can actually achieve a depth of 20ft and more. The LINKWITZ dipole bass regularly provokes jaw drops. You can feel the drum stroke in your chest. Dry, powerful and un-boomy due to its unique radiation pattern. Physics at play! This kind of top performance can only be achieved as an active setup. We optimized our fully analog signal processor to the latest phase coherent, cascaded architecture.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Two aspects:

Demo, how authentic a spatial setting of musicians & their music can be experienced at home. This can be judged best, when you know, the situation at the recording venue:

  • Come On In My Kitchen by Carmen Gomez Inc, (Label SoundLiaison)
  • Equinox by Markus Schwartz & Lakou Brooklyn (Label Soundkeeper Recordings)‍
  • The reference recording in DSD256, done in minimal mic technique from this event is a milestone in authenticity, believability and naturalness. See this free download link.

Demo of dynamic and chest-hammering bass drums with dipole subs:

  • Liberian Girl (Michael Jackson)
  • Bass and drum Intro (Nils Lofgren)
  • Game of Love (Daft Punk)

What other products pair best with yours?

We appreciate every source , that provides a good analog signal to feed our PowerBoxes. This can be reel-to-reel tape machines, vinyl or very good DACs. We prefer, if the signal is kept with least interference/filtering/altering.

Of course, everything starts with the proper recording technique and equipment. We appreciate the outstanding work of labels like e.g. SoundLiaision, Soundkeeper Recordings, Outermarker records, Cohearent records, selected ones from EVO sound, and some older OnePoint recordings from DENON.

Iconoclast Cable

Iconoclast Cable is an American cable line designed by Galen Gareis, a now-retired Belden engineer. Gareis came to believe that cables with identical resistance, inductance and capacitance can still sound different because parts of the signal travel at different speeds, and he designed Iconoclast to balance that timing. The interconnects use a star-quad geometry with an air dielectric, documented in published design papers. Speaker, RCA and XLR cables each follow one design. Each comes in three conductor materials with the same electricals, so any difference an owner hears comes from the metal alone.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We have an extraordinary line of audio cables produced by Belden, the 123+ year old $3-billion wire and cable manufacturing company. The cables were designed and manufactured utilizing the incomparable resources of the Belden Engineering and Design Center and manufacturing facilities in Richmond, IN. Design briefs, white pages and complete engineering data are all placed as an open book on our website.

What's your approach to customer support?

We are not in the business of selling snake oil at the noise bleed prices that plague our industry in this segment. We have an no questions asked 30-day return policy leaving the audiophile zero risk in trying our cables. We are manufacturer direct and support only a very small handful of dealers, mostly international. We want to maintain personal relationships with customers and hold prices at levels that are within reach of most audiophiles.
