What reviewers think

Magazine reviewers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below.

Product Strengths

  • Detail-rich soundscape and blacker backgrounds, delivering classic tube magic for holographic sound
  • Strong and robust bass dynamics that are addictive, providing world-class performance when paired well with speakers
  • Exciting, powerful, and all-around performance with a big and deep soundstage, offering a more mature and involved soundstage
  • Top-notch build quality, with attention to detail in the custom transformer, point-to-point wiring, and robust power supply
  • Versatility in tube selection (KT88, 6550, EL34) to customize the tone, catering to different musical preferences

Product Considerations

  • The plastic nuts on the five-way binding posts for the speaker terminals can be a little slick when using spade connectors
  • Can be tricky to fit onto a single shelf, due to the placement of speaker taps, input connectors, and the power cord all being on top
  • The Vandersteen Model 3 might not be the best match, with the speaker feeling like the weak link in the system
  • Speaker matching is a consideration, with low efficiency, low or swingy impedance loads, or heavily damped speakers not being ideal
  • May require a break-in period of several weeks to achieve optimal imaging, bass tightness, and instrument focus

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs. Stereo 15: The Casablancas throw a wider stage and offer noticeably blacker backgrounds
  • Vs. Dynaco evolution setup: Casablancas have a bit more detail and extension, and maybe a little more musical presence
  • Vs solid state amps like CLASSÉ DELTA Stereo, Rotel Michi S5, or Mark Levinson 5805: The ampsandsound Casablanca monoblocks are more akin to the best offerings of high powered tube amps

Takeaway: The Casablanca monoblocks offer a detail-rich and powerful tube sound with great versatility through different tube options. For a classic tube experience with a wide soundstage that puts the listener right there in the music, the Casablanca's are worth considering.

How useful are hifi reviews? We consider them useful for three things: (1) Surfacing new products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've ever heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's unique attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we  discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on everything—rarely being negative for fear of souring relationships with manufacturers. Further, they seldom have more than a couple products on-hand at once, relying on their imperfect memories to compare to past products.

Compared to their other products

Manufacturer's notes

The Casablanca's earned their name due to their classic looks and commanding performance, and came about in response to requests from our customers for an amplifier capable of driving difficult speaker loads while retaining the purity of our SET line. Typically high power single-ended amplifiers are either run in pentode or using exotic power tubes; for this task we instead opted for a push-pull based amplifier based on the classic Eico HF97.
The Casablanca's provide 60 watts with KT88/6550 power tubes and 45 watts with EL-34s. Using a 12AX7/6SN7 front end allows access to a vast array of NOS/NIB tubes without the costs and sourcing of exotic tube choices. The goal is to bring classic tube texture, harmonics and realism without reliance on exotic choices or modern solid-state additions which color the sound, diminish the impact and realism.

While the chassis of the Casablanca utilizes a wooden base, the mounting plate is ampsandsound's typical heavy gauge plate, offering some of the noise reduction and mechanical damping of the Zion or Arch, while reducing size and costs significantly. Connoisseurs of tube amplifiers will be well familiar with the form factor, but may be surprised by just how compact these amplifiers are: two Casablancas fit nearly in the footprint of one of our stereo amplifiers.

The Casablanca's come with multiple output taps and a supremely over spec'd power supply. You will likely never bring the Casablanca's to clipping or hear them compress as the power supply and current reserves feel limitless. As with our other two-channel amplifiers, massive current reserves and robust amperage on tap are part of our highly dynamic, low-distortion house sound.

The Casablanca's provided extremely articulate bass, with remarkable mid and high-frequency extension. Several customers have described these ...
  • Input impedance: 475Kohm
  • Input sensitivity: 1.6v for full power
  • Noise: 680uV RMS
  • Power: 60 Watts RMS with KT88 power tubes
  • Bandwidth @ 1 watt: 10 Hz to 35 kHz -3db
  • Bandwidth @ full power (60watts): 26hz to 18khz
  • THD @ 1Watt: 0.016%
  • THD @ 5Watts: 0.042%
  • THD @ 20watts: 0.095%
  • THD MAX: 0.124%
  • Noise: 1.48mV

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • They transport you to a new venue instantaneously, engaging every one of your senses the minute you flip their on-off switch
  • They deliver nuance, grace, and thunderous force no matter the speaker or the source equipment
  • They deliver a level of detail that is exceptional, allowing you to hear subtle nuances in music
  • They offer an enjoyable listening experience due to the output tubes being triode strapped, providing a warmer sound that sits just to the right of neutral
  • They are fast and capable of keeping up with complex music, delivering impact and transforming the listening experience into a visceral one

Product Considerations

  • Setting up the Zions requires work and effort, including adjusting AC Balance, DC Balance, and power tube Bias, which can take about an hour and a half
  • Adjusting AC Balance requires a total harmonic distortion analyzer or an oscilloscope and a signal generator
  • Changing tubes requires bias checks after 10 hours, a full checkup after 100 hours, and a third adjustment at about 500 hours
  • They require the user to operate it properly with no automatic or safety feature to prevent you from driving off the road
  • Matched power tubes are really important because the Zions only have a single bias setting for both power tubes

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • The Zions are Justin's take on Citation V and he improved the original design by splitting left and right channels into their own chassis and replacing the solid-state rectifier with a 5AR4 (or 5U4G) rectifier

Takeaway: The ampsandsound Zions are exceptional amplifiers that deliver a high level of detail, nuance, and an enjoyable listening experience, and they are built with great care and attention to detail. For those who appreciate the work involved in setting them up, the Zions provide a rewarding and immersive audio experience.

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Powerful, able to drive any speaker at any level with ease
  • Delivers a new dimension in realism at any volume level, exposing the timbre of bass instruments unlike ever heard before
  • Reveals harmonic quality of instruments and voices

Product Considerations

  • Heavy, weighing 140lb (63.5kg), requiring assistance for moving and unboxing
  • High running temperature (55-65oC across the chassis) and draws 500W from the wall when idle
  • When speaker cables are terminated with spade lugs, caution is advised as the posts are close together
  • Output is floating—it should not be connected to any loudspeaker with a grounded 'black' terminal
  • BAT components take a long time to "break in" (400-500 hours of use)

Takeaway: The BAT REX 500 is a very powerful amplifier that drives speakers with ease and reveals new levels of realism in familiar recordings. It is a must-audition for those seeking reference-level power amplification.

The story of the Bryce was an extension of our work with the Nautilus integrated amp. The Nautilus integrated how special single ended amps could sound. Where the Zions represent ultra bandwidth push pull mono blocks the Bryce monos our are Ultra wide bandwidth single ended amplifiers with an output that opens them to most speakers with moderate efficiency. The Bryce’s mono layout allowed room for innovative thinking with the inclusion of a fixed bias structure and moderate feedback. The Bryce exacts the maximum output from a single power tube through high bias and gentle feedback. Wired as true Tetrodes feedback was used to extend the frequency response and maintain operation closely mimic triode curves.

Black Pearl

ampsandsound
Much like its namesake, the Black Pearl is made of the stuff of legends: the Western Electric 300B. The most famous audio tube ever made, and for good reason - it’s low distortion, clarity and purity of tone set it apart from even other triodes. In the right amplifier the 300B is fast, dynamic and tight, qualities we often associate with larger, more complex pentode topologies. Like the Calypsos, the Black Pearl started as a personal project with the goal of maximizing the potential of the Western Electric 300b reissue. This is among the very best 300B replicas one can buy, and to many ears, the closest one can get to originals.

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Simplicity mixed with extreme refinement delivers something special that is unforgettable
  • Amazing bass control, even over speakers with notoriously floppy bass
  • Solid-state quiet, with no noise or hum present even with ears pressed up to the speakers
  • Calmly pulls one into the presentation, taking one further into the music
  • Excels with music featuring a lot of inner detail or acoustic instruments, resolving textures and attacks with precision
  • Sheer physical quality, both inside and out, is the best of the best

Product Considerations

  • If new to the 300B tube, note these tubes have no central locator pins like other power tubes, one can put these tubes in their sockets wrong and blow the amplifier up
  • Requires no setup other than installing the tubes

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Attention to detail is not seen on a McIntosh
  • Only the BAT REX Power Amplifier delivers bass grip and resolution at the same level

Takeaway: The ampsandsound Black Pearl amplifier offers a unique and immersive listening experience with exceptional detail and bass control. It is a destination product worth the investment for those who truly appreciate high-quality audio.

  • Offers an ability to resolve even the finest musically significant details.

Product Considerations

  • Requires a substantial amount of space due to its multi-component design.
  • The sound offered might be 'too beautiful' for some listeners, as it is not 'brutal' or 'terse' enough.
  • Requires care in using its switches to avoid shutdowns.
  • Some reviewers note it was 'dark sounding' on the highs, though it did not lack information.

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Compared to Quad ESL loudspeakers, it surpasses the musicality and clarity achieved with many tube amps, rivaling even high-end options like Lamm Industries ML2.2 and Miyajima Laboratory 2010.
  • The ASR has better bass and is more transparent than MBL, however, it lacks the grace that MBL offers.
  • Compared to Rogue 180W monoblocks, the ASR Emitter II delivers better bass.
  • The ASR Emitter II has slightly better bass control than Manley Neoclassic 500, but the Neoclassic 500 has a more marvelous style of fiddling.
  • Compared to Edge and Audio Research, the ASR is darker sounding.

Takeaway: The ASR Emitter II Exclusive offers a combination of tube-like warmth and solid-state precision, making the listening experience a very involving one. It provides exceptional control and detail across the entire frequency range, making it a great choice for audiophiles.
