What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

Product Strengths

  • Aluminum alloy cabinets use liquid die casting, in addition to a 3.5″ carbon fiber woofer and 1″ silk tweeter, with the larger-than-average woofers and tweeters providing better soundstage, timbre, and resolution.
  • Sound is perfectly balanced, from 100Hz to 20kHz, and one can hear all the work done by the brand’s engineers on the filtering, with the crossover frequency perfectly adapted to the speaker’s topology.
  • The 1″ silk tweeter employs a KSV copper-clad aluminum voice coil and marvelously reproduces the treble region, providing a remarkable amount of air after 10kHz and a sense of sparkle.
  • Well made with premium materials throughout, the FiiO SP3 doesn’t have much to envy from similarly priced active monitors by well established brands, while it is certainly better made and looking than most multimedia speaker sets.
  • Compact size allows for easy placement, and the SP3 can fill up an entire dining room and living room.

Product Considerations

  • The SP3 doesn’t have any wireless or digital inputs, and it doesn’t have a subwoofer output.
  • Some reviewers find its bass response to be limited, and that it lacks sub-bass.
  • Distortion may occur at very high volume levels.
  • The speaker has a slight level of noise when no music is playing.
  • Poor vertical directivity for a speaker that is likely to be placed below the listener’s ears.

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs Yamaha HS7: SP3 almost matched it pound-for-pound in resolution, neutrality, and overall realism, the HS7 is slightly cleaner, airier, and more neutral.
  • Vs Sonos ERA 100: The soundstage of ERA 100 felt artificial, almost chemical, compared to the FiiO SP3.

Takeaway: The FiiO SP3 is a compact, well-built, and versatile speaker that sounds great for its size and price, especially for nearfield listening. If a small speaker that punches above its weight in sound quality is desired, the SP3 is a great option.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

Manufacturer details

  • Woofer: 3.5-inch carbon fiber
  • Tweeter: 1-inch silk
  • Crossover Frequency: 3.4kHz
  • Power Output: 30W2+10W2
  • Volume: 2.35L
  • Bluetooth Version: 5.0
  • Bluetooth Chip: Qualcomm QCC5124
  • Amplifier: TI 3118 Class D
In an active desktop speaker, the tweeter frequently plays a crucial role in reproducing fine musical detail, instrumental overtones, and overall treble resolution. The SP3 series, unlike many other active desktop speakers employing a ¾-inch tweeter, instead utilizes a 1-inch tweeter that can produce frequencies as high as 35kHz. The tweeter's KSV copper-clad aluminum voice coil that even at high volumes, ultra-high frequencies remain uncompressed – the result being better treble reproduction even in off-axis listening as well as highly resolving treble with natural timbre.

Brand highlights

Taking a step back to look at reviewers' thoughts of the brand's entire lineup—not just this product—what stands out most is the following:

  • FIIO combines Bluetooth capability, high power output, and a desktop mode in their portable DAC/amp designs.
  • They offer a high degree of user customization through their control app, allowing for adjustments such as parametric EQ and device behaviors.

K7

  • Positioning: An all-in-one balanced desktop DAC and headphone amplifier designed for affordability and compact convenience.
  • Description: Uses THX AAA 788+ amplifier technology and a six-stage audio circuit to provide clean, balanced sound suitable for everyday listening in small room setups. Compared to the other models, its feature set is streamlined without some of the advanced digital processing and power management found in the higher-end products.

K9AKM

  • Positioning: A desktop DAC and headphone amplifier built around AKM DAC chips to offer enhanced audio clarity at a moderate price point.
  • Description: Focuses on a refined AKM-based design that delivers lower distortion and improved detail over the entry-level K7 while keeping the design compact and easy to use. In comparison with more premium models, it strikes a balance between performance and cost, offering better resolution.

K19

  • Positioning: A high-power DAC and headphone amplifier aimed at users who need robust output for driving demanding headphones.
  • Description: Incorporates advanced circuitry and a design optimized for high-current performance to maintain clear and natural sound even at louder volumes. Relative to the K7 and K9AKM, the K19 adds more power and precise output control while being less digitally complex than the top-tier models.

K11R2R

  • Positioning: A desktop DAC and headphone amplifier that employs a fully differential 24-bit R2R resistor ladder for superior resolution and detail.
  • Description: Offers dual NOS and OS modes along with a high-quality electronic volume control to enhance dynamic range and clarity. Compared to the more basic K7 and K9AKM, its advanced resistor architecture and multi-stage power supply deliver lower noise and customizable gain settings.

K17

  • Positioning: A high-end desktop DAC and headphone amplifier designed for uncompromising performance and extensive functionality.
  • Description: Features a fully discrete amplifier circuit with advanced DSP, dual AK4499 DAC chips, and separate analog/digital circuitry to ensure smooth, natural sound with high output power. In contrast to other products in the lineup, the K17 provides top-tier build quality, multiple protection systems, and an extensive set of digital processing features.

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Versatile connectivity options with multiple inputs, including RCA/Phono, AUX, USB-C, coaxial, and optical inputs, as well as Bluetooth 5.4 with LDAC support

  • The limited bass adjustment via the physical knob can result in boomy sound at higher levels

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

Expand Details

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Impressive sound quality with balanced and detailed audio, creating a wider soundstage than expected for their size
  • Compact size is ideal for smaller desks
  • Can be paired with a subwoofer for deeper bass
  • Clean and understated design blends well into desktop environments
  • Can work well with CRT televisions due to magnetic shielding, preventing buzzing

Product Considerations

  • Lacks deep bass without a subwoofer
  • Some reviewers noted a slightly scooped or recessed midrange
  • No aux (3.5mm) headphone jack is included

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • The ORA holds its own against the Fluance AS61s, a larger speaker with larger drivers and cabinet, with comparable in-room sound
  • The ORA sound better than the M1 MacBook Pro speakers, with better bass performance and a stronger midrange
  • The ORA sound better overall, cleaner, and more detailed than the Kanto YU2 and YU4, similar to—but possibly cleaner than—the YU6
  • The Kanto TUK is in a different sound class, with more depth and clarity, so the ORA wouldn't be considered an upgrade
  • The Kanto Aura sounds more distinct and textured than the Audioengine speakers
  • The ORA has more prominent bass than the Audioengine A2 Plus
