What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

Product Strengths

  • Highly energetic, lively and captivating performance, closer to a live-like energy level
  • Incredible easiness, freedom, and effortlessness of music reproduction
  • Perfect control over every aspect of the music reproduction, resulting in a remarkably rich, pure and transparent sound
  • Brilliantly coherent, fluid, dynamic, highly resolving, insightful, crisp, spatial, and immersive sound
  • Offers all the settings and adjustments needed to optimize performance, including on-the-fly, precise VTA

Product Considerations

  • Poorly pressed/worn records can sound noticeably worse
  • Limitations become clear when contrasted with far more expensive turntables (six-figure range)

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs original J.Sikora KV12—the KV12 Max does everything even better
  • Vs J.Sikora KV9 Max—the KV12 Max goes even deeper into the lowest bass area and delivers it saturated with even more energy
  • Vs standard KV12—the KV12 Max is far superior

Takeaway: The J.Sikora KV12 Max is an amazing tonearm delivering highly expressive, dynamic, and resolving sound for an immersive experience. It brings one closer to perfection, making it a worthwhile consideration in the market for a top-tier tonearm.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

The KV12 Max tonearm features a unipivot design with a unique Kevlar tube construction, combining lightness, stiffness and internal damping. It includes a proprietary VTA smooth adjustment mechanism built like a photographic lens with two trapezoidal threads. The arm incorporates new improvements over the original KV12 including a lighter and stiffer Kevlar tube, improved tube filling, new zirconia-based bearing, and replacement of aluminum elements with two types of bronze. The design also features improved VTA and azimuth adjustment precision, an enhanced counterweight system, and updated wiring.

The tonearm's Kevlar construction makes it exceptionally stiff and light, with the 12-inch version offering reduced stylus tracking errors and enhanced precision that allows extraordinary insight into recording nuances. The unipivot bearing and materials used ensure the arm's parameters remain unchanged over time, providing reliability and consistent sound quality for years. The design allows users to easily adjust all necessary settings including attenuation, anti-skating, azimuth, and VTA - which can be adjusted while listening to music.
