What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

Product Strengths

  • J.Sikora KV9 preserves the dynamics and energy of the presentation, conveying music with liveliness
  • It offers excellent PRAT (Pace, Rhythm, and Timing), along with impressive resolution
  • The tonearm presents music in an easy, natural way, allowing the hardware to move out of the way
  • KV9 resolves tiny details and weaves them into a coherent, lively, and emotional whole
  • It renders spatial aspects of recordings convincingly, differentiating elements album by album

Product Considerations

  • The main bearing uses steel rather than ceramics
  • Multiple metal elements of the arm and bearing's housing are made of aluminum and painted black instead of bronze and brass
  • The counterweights are made of a less precious metal

Takeaway: The J.Sikora KV9 offers the best price-to-performance ratio among all J.Sikora tonearms, delivering a stunning performance at a fraction of the price of the top model. It is a great choice for vinyl fans who want a taste of J.Sikora's incredible performance without breaking the bank.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

The KV9 tonearm is a unipivot design featuring a unique Kevlar tube construction - the first and only tonearm in the world to use this material. The Kevlar tube provides an optimal combination of lightness, stiffness, and energy absorption. The arm incorporates oil damping and combines various materials including aluminum, bronze, brass and stainless steel. It features adjustable VTA and azimuth, with 24K Gold plated 6N OCC Copper wiring.

The 9-inch tonearm reproduces exceptionally fast and contoured bass with lots of detail in all ranges of sound. The design prioritizes exceptional simplicity making it very easy to calibrate and extremely user-friendly in everyday use. Users can easily adjust all necessary settings including attenuation, anti-skating, azimuth and VTA (which can be adjusted while listening to music).

The Kevlar construction presented unique manufacturing challenges, requiring special machining procedures and careful processing due to the fabric's tendency to fray during cutting. Special dies for rolling and cutting the aramid fabric had to be developed, along with specific resin application methods.
