Sound Characteristics

The Galion TS A20 Class A power amplifier excels in delivering a highly detailed treble with an extended decay, creating a sense of spaciousness and airiness. Exotic Capacitors

Firstly, the USA-made Jupiter copper foil paper and wax capacitor is renowned for its natural tone. Secondly, the Jupiter VitaminQ capacitor, also made in the USA, is celebrated for producing an exceptionally lush midrange. Lastly, the Jupiter Vintage tone capacitor enhances the depth of the soundstage. Class A amplifiers are known for their exceptional sound quality, but they also generate significant amounts of heat due to their design principle of keeping the output devices conducting at all times. This heat can potentially degrade components over time and reduce the amplifier's lifespan if not properly managed. We have engineered the TS A20 amplifier with a focus on longevity and performance. The amplifier features an oversized chassis that provides ample surface area for effective heat dissipation. This design choice ensures that the heatsinks operate at a moderate temperature of around 45°C (113°F) under normal operating conditions, rather than reaching high temperatures that could compromise the amplifier's reliability.

An Amplifier for Life

​

The TS A20 amplifier includes a two-year warranty, but it is engineered for a lifetime of use. A common issue with servicing amplifiers over extended periods is the discontinuation of certain parts. To address this, we have stocked additional components for the TS A20, ensuring that it remains serviceable for years to come.

The Mira Ceti 300B is one of the few Single Ended (SE) tube amplifiers in the world made with toroidal speaker transformers. It is characterised by an outstanding, saturated midrange, dynamics and a solid bass base. It is the essence of analogue sound – its enchanting timbre amazingly realistically reproduces vocal, classical and jazz music.

The SIT-4 is the First Watt power amplifier using the industrial grade Static Induction Transistors. It is preceded by the ground breaking SIT-1, 2, and 3 and follows their technical philosophy and construction. An important difference in the SIT-4 is the SIT device itself.

The previous three designs used Silicon Carbide to make a custom vertical power Jfet with a low impedance Drain whose character nicely emulated a power Triode tube, but directly operating at the current and voltage that would drive loudspeakers without the requirement for an output transformer. SITs lend themselves to high quality audio performance with very simple Class A circuits with little or no dependence on other active circuit elements or negative feedback. 

​

The Common Source mode SIT-1 could do the job surrounded by only passive elements, and the SIT-2 required only bias from a current source. The SIT-3 upped the game with Common Drain design biased by a novel Pass circuit, MUFF (Mu Follower/Follower). The SIT-4 follows in the Common Source footsteps but ups the game with an industrial SIT.

The SIT-1/2/3 gain transistors were rated at a few amps and about 50 watts dissipation. This amplifier uses a Tokin THF51s rated at 600 volts, 30 amps and 400 watts. As a practical matter, the limitations of the SIT-4 circuit are the size of the heat sinks. And this big Jfet manages a bandwidth of 50 megaHertz…

The circuit of the SIT-4 is simple. Q1 is a new-old-stock Toshiba 2SK170 which drives the Gate of the Q2 SIT, whose output is biased by a mu-follower current source Q3.

The Audio Note (UK) P2 Stereo Power Amplifier is a Pure Class A valve amplifier which preserves the entire musical waveform as one "whole," producing a level of performance that is radically superior to the majority of current designs. Part selection is optimised to realise the most neutral and realistic sonic reproduction. Available in Push-Pull and Single Ended designs.

The P2 PP fulfills all Audio Note (UK) Level 1 criteria: - Pure Class A Push-Pull Pentode operation Materials and component quality

A high gain power amplifier stage is used consisting of an ECC82 dual triode acting as an anode follower for the first stage, the output of which is applied to a second anode follower (6SL7) which feeds the parallel connected 6L6G output valves. The output transformers are custom designed and manufactured by Audio Note (UK), and are of the highest possible quality. The power supply is a multi-element design, ensuring precise operation of each circuit stage, whilst a DC supply feeds the low level valve filaments.
