What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

Product Strengths

  • Natural and realistic sound, not 'tubey' but refined
  • Organic warmth and a touch of 'tube magic'
  • Technical abilities combined with a natural, alive sound signature
  • Exceptional transient response with inner detail and lifelike information
  • Many inputs and outputs available

Product Considerations

  • The sound can initially be very 'digital' before properly conditioned, requiring a couple of days to achieve its optimal sonic signature
  • A reviewer noticed a subtle midrange bump, which may cause congestion in super-complex music compared to higher-priced DACs

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs Bricasti M3: Wavelight is slightly warmer sounding with somewhat deeper bass, and overall, the Wavelight is preferred for its musicality at a lower price point

Takeaway: The Rockna Wavelight is a well-built DAC/preamp that provides a balanced, natural, and engaging listening experience. It offers high-end performance with unique technologies and features.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

Brand highlights

Taking a step back to look at reviewers' thoughts of the brand's entire lineup—not just this product—what stands out most is the following:

  • Rockna emphasizes in-house design and production of their core R2R DAC modules, driven by custom FPGA algorithms. These allow for ongoing firmware updates that can fundamentally alter the DAC's behavior and performance.
  • Wavedream NET: When used as a digital transport and paired with Rockna DACs via I2S, the Wavedream NET creates a complete digital front-end. This pairing significantly reduces jitter and optimizes the digital signal path, allowing it to compete with best-in-class systems.
  • Wavedream DAC: Rockna products often include a high-quality analog preamplifier section, offering system flexibility and in many cases eliminating the need for a separate preamp when used in all-digital setups.
  • Wavedream DAC: The DAC also provides a wide range of customizable digital filters — including linear, minimum phase, hybrid, and NOS — enabling users to tailor the sound to their specific preferences.

Wavelight DAC

  • Positioning: Entry-level line, designed for affordability and compactness.
  • Description: Offers a smooth and detailed sound with its FPGA-based architecture, making it ideal for those seeking digital precision with an analog charm. Unlike the Wavedream series, it provides a more budget-friendly option with a focus on value and future-proofing, suitable for small rooms or those with limited budgets.

Wavedream DAC

  • Positioning: High-end digital-to-analog converter, flagship model.
  • Description: Features advanced FPGA architecture and custom digital filters, delivering exceptional sound quality. It surpasses the Wavelight DAC with its superior clock system and discrete R2R ladder topology.

Wavedream NET

  • Positioning: High-performance audio server and CD transport.
  • Description: Combines a memory-based CD transport with a powerful audio server, offering seamless integration with the Wavedream DAC. It stands out with its isolated music server and linear power supply, providing a noise-free audio experience.

Wavedream Reference

  • Positioning: Ultimate high-end DAC, pinnacle of the lineup.
  • Description: The epitome of Rockna's engineering, featuring a custom architecture with multiple FPGAs and an ASRC-free digital PLL clock solution. It offers exceptional audio precision and refinement, surpassing the Wavedream DAC with its advanced design and performance.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We developed the expertise to design the hardware exactly as we want using programmable logic circuits. This means our designs are free from the limitations imposed from off-the-shelf chips, especially regarding critical conversion and clock sub-systems. Original designs can emerge under these conditions, a fresh alternative on a market where unfortunately many designs are similar.

When started the company back in 1999, we started with amplifiers and dedicated many years to analog designs. After switching to digital products a few years later, integrating digital and analog in the same circuit came naturally and it's one of the keys regarding sound quality.

What's your approach to customer support?

The natural way is to contact the local seller or distributor. If the issue cannot be resolved at that level, we will assist our local partners in every way to have the issue resolved. For the countries where we don't have a representative, the owner of the products can contact us directly. We have a friendly support and we don't require anything but a valid serial number. Our support extends also post-warranty period, and if possible, we try to have everything free of charge (if possible).

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Frankly, I don't have a favorite particular track, or two or three for demonstrations. Decent recordings must sound good, good recordings should sound fantastic. That's our goal.

What other products pair best with yours?

From our interview with
Nicolae Jitariu

Product Strengths

  • High-quality build and stellar construction with meticulous attention to detail
  • Acts as a music server, CD transport/ripper, and digital source/streamer, consolidating multiple components
  • Exceptional performance as a digital source, with very low jitter
  • Offers a large selection of features suitable for many use cases
  • Can be used with external drives and has both USB and network connections

Product Considerations

  • The unit is large and may not fit on a desk or in many racks
  • The Roon core may not be as snappy as some dedicated PCs, though newer units have a faster CPU
  • Ripping uses a separate computer disc transport and connect to one of the rear USB ports, not the NETs own transport mechanism

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs Singxer SU-6: The Wavedream NET has lower jitter, being the highest performing digital source tested
  • Vs Wavedream DAC via USB: I2S output from the Wavedream NET to the Wavedream Signature DAC resulted in a slight increase in quality, particularly in precision of imaging
