What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

Product Strengths

  • Combined with the Tessellate cartridge, the GMT One turntable produces the best sound from vinyl records of every musical genre, according to the reviewer
  • Presentation is remarkably expansive, three-dimensional, timbrally neutral, and image-solid from the start, delivering performance significantly above previous experiences
  • The turntable provides agile timekeeping and nimbleness and portrays the tiniest of low-level gestures
  • The system's imaging, soundstaging consistency, solidity, and three-dimensional layering are sensational
  • The remote-control feature for starting, stopping, and adjusting VTA/SRA is a convenience that becomes quickly indispensable

Product Considerations

  • The tonearm wire can be too long, causing a kink that might affect azimuth and anti-skating, requiring some fiddling
  • Adjusting VTA/SRA on the arm can also affect tracking force and azimuth
  • The air-suspension system can develop leaks

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs OMA K3 and Air Force Zero: Provides the best of both turntables—grand in scale and produces sensuous textures like the Zero, but has the agile timekeeping of the K3
  • Vs Rega Naia: The sound on the GMT One was much better when playing Led Zeppelin II

Takeaway: The GMT One turntable offers amazing sound with an easy-to-use design. It is a great choice for those who want the best listening experience.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

GMT® One System is a collection of completely new solutions that have been brought together to create one harmonious analogue replay system. Every aspect of the design serves a purpose, leaving no room for redundancy or embellishment. Interdependent systems are harmonised and finely tuned through careful material choice and novel design that extract incremental and cumulative improvements that go beyond the sum of the parts.
The GMT® One System has been designed and developed by a large number of people and organisations that are collectively referred to as the GMT Consortium. The GMT® One System is comprised of thirty novel developments. It incorporates technology with international patents that are pending and a number of design registrations. The manufacturing intellectual property all resides within Wilson Benesch. As such it is inconceivable that another turntable with GMT® technologies will emerge. Two product names are trademarked GMT® and GRAVITON®.

Brand highlights

Taking a step back to look at reviewers' thoughts of the brand's entire lineup—not just this product—what stands out most is the following:

  • Wilson Benesch stands out by manufacturing nearly all parts in-house, including drivers and even carbon fiber enclosures, providing greater control over quality and performance.
  • They distinguish themselves through research into advanced materials, including bio-composites developed through collaborative projects with European research institutions, as a sustainable alternative to carbon fiber.
  • A key differentiator lies in Wilson Benesch's design approach which prioritizes transient performance and dynamic coherence, even if it means trading off mid-bass warmth and weight, leading to a distinct sonic signature.
  • Wilson Benesch emphasizes a minimalist approach to crossovers, even running some drivers full range, striving for signal purity and coherence which sets them apart from brands using more complex filter networks.

A.C.T. 3Zero

  • Positioning: A classic line that embodies the heritage of Wilson Benesch with advanced composite technology.
  • Description: Features a biocomposite monocoque that enhances damping and silence, setting it apart from previous carbon fiber models. It includes an Isobaric Drive System for tight bass, unlike the Resolution 3Zero which focuses on full-range performance.

Resolution 3Zero

  • Positioning: A high-performance floorstanding speaker designed for power and control.
  • Description: Uses an Isobaric Drive System for controlled bass and a biocomposite monocoque for acoustic excellence, offering more power than the A.C.T. 3Zero. Its design allows for a full-range experience, unlike the standmount Endeavour 3Zero.

Endeavour 3Zero

  • Positioning: A flagship standmount loudspeaker with advanced materials and design.
  • Description: Combines a Fibonacci hybrid dome tweeter and Tactic 3.0 drive units for seamless integration, offering a more compact solution than the Resolution 3Zero.

Omnium

  • Positioning: A modular design that represents the evolution of Wilson Benesch's loudspeaker technology.
  • Description: Features a biocomposite monocoque and a massive aluminum foot for stability, providing a more refined sound than the A.C.T. 3Zero. It offers a balance of power and elegance, unlike the more compact Endeavour 3Zero.

Eminence

  • Positioning: The flagship model of Wilson Benesch, representing the pinnacle of their loudspeaker design.
  • Description: Integrates ten drive units with a biocomposite monocoque for exceptional coherency, surpassing the Omnium in scale and design.

Our take on the brand

Wilson Benesch pioneered the use of carbon fiber in audio products, starting with their 1991 turntable, and continues to use this material extensively in their loudspeakers for its unique structural advantages. Their speakers feature an isobaric driver configuration that enables deeper bass from smaller cabinets, and they manufacture almost all components in-house, including their distinctive curved monocoque enclosures that reduce resonance.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Engineering taken to the ultimate level. That’s what our brand and engineering are abou. We want to make the absolute finest sounding speakers that science can produce. We’re constantly looking at new engineering and materials to rethink as much as possible.

Let’s start with the tweeter: Normally you have soft dome, magnet structure, etc. But in the construction of how we do it, there’s a whole chambered element behind the tweeter, and we slice the soft dome down the middle and insert material to augment rigidity—to reach the frequencies a hard dome could do. It’s the beauty of soft dome with the breadth of a hard dome.

Next, our isobaric loading: Our drivers face each other to increase speed and decrease cabinet space. This also helps drivers more easily cross into where the tweeter takes over, making for a more seamless transition between drivers.

Kronos
Discovery

Kronos developed a wholly new way to attach the chassis to the suspension system, using completely different soft clamping methods. This treats the chassis more like the soundbox of a guitar or a violin because in that case how it's held dictates to some degree how it sounds.

Kronos Audio's turntables feature a unique counter-rotating dual-platter system that cancels out rotational forces and minimizes vibrations, setting them apart in the industry. Their turntables also use supercapacitors to operate off-grid for reduced electrical noise, while their Discovery RS tonearm employs a proprietary bearing system for precise playback.

Our Summary

No items found.

Product Strengths

  • The Chronos Discovery Turntable's performance completely resets the bar for what can be achieved sonically with the playback of LPs and is the new milestone in reference-level LP playback
  • It presents an entirely fresh and previously unattainable level of musical experience, a new pinnacle of expressiveness and communication that is more than merely revelatory and bordered on transformative
  • Discovery presents with an amazingly black, stark background, yielding a noise floor so decidedly defeated that it is all but imperceptible
  • It exhibits this incredible ability to more finely differentiate and reveal the ever-so-specific size and locality, and with some recordings, even the shape, of each and every instrumental voice it regenerates
  • The new model comes equipped with a massive custom hand-wound power transformer and uses a bank of super-capacitors on its output—optimising damping (towards back EMF), improving the microdynamic motor control, and increasing drive stability

Product Considerations

  • The speed controllers on the front panel are not marked
  • It is an intricate and complex piece of equipment to install, best left to experts
  • Its size and Captain Nemo physicality may be a drawback

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Compared to the Kronos Pro, the Discovery shares no components—it isn't the Pro writ large, but runs along common evolutionary design channels
  • The Discovery goes a lot further and is significantly better

Takeaway: The Chronos Discovery Turntable offers a new and improved music listening experience. It is considered a top-of-the-line product that uncovers sounds you may have never noticed before.
