What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

Product Strengths

  • It's 'one helluva integrated amplifier with its combined strengths of stiff power, agility, and heart'.
  • It worked well with three very different speakers, lighting them up from bottom to top—making them sound their richest and boldest.
  • The Unico 90 allowed the source to shine through, indicating very little character of its own.
  • It offers superb control, feeling like there was an endless power reserve on tap.
  • It has a musicality and energetic nature with liveliness and smoothness that managed to suck the reviewer right into the music.

Product Considerations

  • The included remote could benefit from a redesign, as the buttons are tiny, all of the same shape, made out of hard plastic, not organized well, and uncomfortable to press.
  • The Unico needs a bit of time to warm up, around 30 minutes, to sound right.

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs Leben CS600X integrated amp: The Leben had the upper hand when it came to richness, where tone colors were painted with more saturation, while also offering the Unico 90's sense of refinement and control.
  • Compared to the Audiovector QR 7 SE paired with the Leben, the Unico 90 made the Audiovector sound like better speakers.
  • Compared to other integrated amplifiers on the reviewer's Favorite List around the Unico's price, it is considered a very worthy contender along with the Audio Research I/50, Cambridge Audio Edge A, or Enleum AMP-23R in terms of overall sonic goods.

Takeaway: The Unison Research Unico 90 is a great amplifier because it makes music sound and feel exciting and lively. It's also versatile, as it can work well with different speakers.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We’re an Italian company that sources everything as locally as possible. Italian through and through—everything we do is done here in Italy. Italian gear really does have its own sound. Sounds more romantic, less analytical. Very listenable. Low levels of ear fatigue.

We’re still hand making tube amps and continually refining them. New innovations in grounding, such as each component being grounded independently so they're really quiet as far as tube amps go, is an ongoing focus—always evolving mature tech.

But we also have new modern tech that's a hybrid of solid state and tube—to give you the best of both worlds. You can run pretty much any speaker you want.

In short, it’s a really easy to listen to sound.

What's your approach to customer support?

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

What other products pair best with yours?

Opera speakers are a great pairing because they're under the same parent company . When Unison is voicing their amps, they use Opera speakers, and vice versa.

However we've had no issues with pairing with Unison research. (But if you're looking at tube gear, you do have to be more careful because you do need a more sensitive speaker.)

In fact, are your speakers very technical? Pairing with Unison Research can help tame that a bit.
