What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • Unison Research products are hand-crafted in Italy, using locally sourced materials and distinctive design elements like wood trim and stainless steel, creating a unique visual aesthetic.
  • They specialize in hybrid amplifier designs, using tubes in the preamp stage and solid-state MOSFETs in the output stage, aiming to capture the sonic benefits of both technologies.
  • They custom-design and manufacture their own transformers, tailoring them to specific amplifier models for optimal performance and a unique sonic signature.
  • Unison Research designs incorporate minimal stages and often utilize zero feedback, prioritizing sonic purity and a balanced sound across a wide range of music genres.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "It's the S6's speed that grabs our attention first. It tracks a signal with a impressive lack of inertia, which translates into a wondrous ability to render the nuances of Nina Simone's voice on I Loves You Porgy with a delicacy we rarely come across." (https://www.whathifi.com/unison-research/s6/review)
  • "Delicate and quiet passages floated in the middle of the room and lingered just long enough for me to lean forward in my chair and absorb them. Jazz trios with strong bass accompaniment felt rock solid and rich with texture; horns had wonderful bite and color." (https://www.ecoustics.com/articles/unison-research-simply-845-part-1)
  • "It sounds absolutely gorgeous, delivering that sweet glowing richness that tubes are famous for, without loss of bite or immediacy. Indeed, it's the combination of silky smoothness and crisp immediacy that is so alluring." (https://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio-visual/hifi-and-audio/amplifiers/unison-research-s6-955432/review)
  • "The S6 produces some of the most lifelike bass response I've heard from an EL34 design – tonally rich, yet controlled throughout the range. Put to the full test with my reference GamuT S9 speakers that are only down 3db at 18hz, the Unison amp proved it could deliver major bass grunt when required." Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We’re an Italian company that sources everything as locally as possible. Italian through and through—everything we do is done here in Italy. Italian gear really does have its own sound. Sounds more romantic, less analytical. Very listenable. Low levels of ear fatigue.

We’re still hand making tube amps and continually refining them. New innovations in grounding, such as each component being grounded independently so they're really quiet as far as tube amps go, is an ongoing focus—always evolving mature tech.

But we also have new modern tech that's a hybrid of solid state and tube—to give you the best of both worlds. You can run pretty much any speaker you want.

In short, it’s a really easy to listen to sound.

What's your approach to customer support?

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

What other products pair best with yours?

Opera speakers are a great pairing because they're under the same parent company . When Unison is voicing their amps, they use Opera speakers, and vice versa.

However we've had no issues with pairing with Unison research. (But if you're looking at tube gear, you do have to be more careful because you do need a more sensitive speaker.)

In fact, are your speakers very technical? Pairing with Unison Research can help tame that a bit.

About the brand

Pathos Acoustics is known for its InPol technology, which combines tube pre-amplification with solid-state amplification to create a distinctive warm yet powerful sound. The brand stands out in the hifi market for its striking visual designs that blend wood and aluminum, while using both tubes and transistors in their amplifiers to achieve their signature sound.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Pathos stands out for two fundamental elements that represent our identity: technological innovation and design philosophy.

The first is INPOL, our exclusive patented technology: a hybrid circuit that combines the warmth and musicality of tubes with the strength and precision of MOSFETs. The tubes shape the sound in terms of amplitude, offering transparency and naturalness, while the MOSFETs provide the current needed to drive the speakers, working in pure Class A, without distortion or feedback. The result is a dynamic, detailed sound that is incredibly faithful to the original. With the evolution of DOUBLE INPOL, this philosophy reaches higher power and even more refined performance, while maintaining the sonic character that defines us.

The second is our choice to remain true to the essence of sound and the true meaning of “Made in Italy.” Every one of our products is designed and built in-house at our facility in Vicenza: from the electronics to the processing of aluminum and wood, to the painting, every phase is closely overseen by our team with artisanal care and obsessive attention to detail. We don’t just build amplifiers: we create unique objects, designed for those who seek an authentic, thrilling listening experience, without compromise, where beauty, technique, and passion coexist in perfect balance.

What's your approach to customer support?

In general, the ideal procedure is for the end user to contact their retailer or local distributor, who are always the first points of reference. However, it often happens that customers reach out to us directly: depending on the situation, I either direct them to our partner or assist them personally.

What truly matters to us is that the customer feels listened to and taken care of. That’s why, even remotely, I often personally handle support cases: not due to a lack of trust in our distributors – with whom we have excellent relationships – but to show that every customer is important to us. We know that our amplifiers have a value that goes beyond the cost: they represent a passion, a conscious choice, often a dream come true. And those who own them have every right to feel in good hands.
