What's unique about the brand

Holo Audio has established itself as a leader in the modern mid-level R-2R DAC movement, focusing on creating DACs with a natural, rich sound that emphasizes musicality over pure detail. Like Denafrips, Holo Audio is known for precise engineering, low noise levels, and exceptional value, offering performance that rivals far more expensive competitors. With a similar approach and price range, Holo Audio is frequently mentioned alongside Denafrips as a top choice for audiophiles seeking high-quality sound without the high-end price tag.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • Holo Audio differentiates itself by crafting R2R ladder DACs with a focus on a natural, smooth, and unforced sonic delivery, diverging from the character of traditional oversampling or chip-based DACs.
  • They utilize a dual-mono design with discrete components and a separate power supply chassis, meticulously engineered to minimize noise and maximize channel separation, resulting in a holographic soundstage.
  • The brand offers configurable I2S inputs to ensure compatibility with a variety of digital sources, alongside a proprietary USB interface optimized for low latency and jitter.
  • Holo Audio's pursuit of sonic excellence is not limited to measured performance but extends to the subjective listening experience, offering multiple modes (NOS, OS) to tailor the sound to individual preferences and system synergy.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "So I'm gonna tell you straight out this is one of, if not the , best DACs I've ever heard. Even during the week or two long continuous play/break-in period in my headphone system, except for perhaps a slight welcoming warmth, nothing stood out except for my own nagging feeling that I was hard pressed to point out a single sonic area in which I've heard this DAC bettered." (https://www.stereotimes.com/post/kitsune-holo-audio-kte-may-dac-by-david-abramson)
  • "The first thing that grabbed my attention was the absolute purity of the vocals, the stark and incredible black background, and of course, the tactile plucks of the guitar. Moreover, all of this was brilliantly integrated within an impressively deep and holographic soundstage in an entirely organic manner." (https://headmania.org/2023/08/02/harmonic-symphony-in-a-box-the-holo-bliss-kte-headphone-amp)
  • "The May KTE has an extremely analog sound and most of the digital traces (98%) are gone when I stream using the hifi Rose RS130, which also has this trait to some extent. This combo comes in at close to $12k (Rose and May) but I can say with confidence that it makes digital STREAMING sound just as good as almost any vinyl rig I have heard, unless I go to a memory of a $75k Vinyl rig I once heard, which was astonishing." (http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2024/10/27/holo-may-kte-edition-hifi-dac-did-it-blow-me-away-in-2024)
  • "The Spring 3 KTE provides such wonderful layering that it's easy to keep track of multiple instruments at the same time—something I wasn't able to necessarily enjoy as much on the Ares II. Vocals—More clearer, the breath work more intimate, the saliva more palpable— hence, even more so 'in the room' then ever before." (https://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb22/YaBB.pl?num=1670371304/3)

About the brand

Denafrips is at the forefront of the modern R-2R DAC movement, producing DACs with a smooth, rich tonal quality that prioritizes organic sound reproduction over analytical detail. Denafrips products deliver ultra-low noise and distortion, competing with ultra-high-end DACs at a fraction of the cost. Often compared to Holo Audio, Denafrips shares a similar philosophy and price-to-performance ratio. They're known for using hand-picked resistors and oven-controlled crystal oscillators, which creates a more natural, analog-like sound compared to traditional DAC chips.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Our DACs feature a true balanced R-2R ladder network array design, with each channel equipped with an independent high-speed CPLD. Multiple sets of precision R-2R resistor networks decode digital signals, ensuring exceptionally low distortion and noise. Additionally, our FIFO buffer and reclocking technology delivers outstanding jitter suppression, significantly reducing reliance on the source device’s clock quality and further enhancing overall sound performance.

What's your approach to customer support?

As both our official channels and distributor network sell directly to end users, we encourage customers to first contact the dealer or seller from whom they purchased the product should any issues arise. This ensures the quickest frontline support. Of course, our official customer service team is also readily available via email and official platforms, typically responding within 24-48 hours. We strive to provide lifetime after-sales support wherever possible, even beyond the warranty period.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Our acoustic engineers typically evaluate the sonic performance of our products using a wide range of string music, vocal recordings, and orchestral pieces. Commonly selected test tracks include:

  • Vivaldi – The Four Seasons
  • Céline Dion – I’m Alive
  • Eagles – Hotel California

These tracks allow us to comprehensively assess dynamic range, vocal clarity, soundstage, and resolution.

What other products pair best with yours?

Our product line covers everything from digital sources to speakers and cables. In our internal evaluations, we exclusively use products from our own line. However, based on extensive customer feedback, our products have been shown to pair extremely well with a wide range of other brands available in the market.

About the brand

SW1X Audio Design creates DACs that use a non-oversampling approach and vintage TDA1541 chips with tube output stages, avoiding digital filtering to maintain a more natural, analog-like sound. Their products feature separate power supply chassis designs and harmonically matched vintage components, including directly heated triode tubes and AB resistors, which are carefully selected for their distinctive sonic qualities.

About the brand

MSB Technology builds their own discrete ladder DACs in-house instead of using off-the-shelf chips, with modular designs that let users upgrade input and output modules over time. Their DACs are made with in-house CNC-machined chassis and proprietary Femto clocks, delivering an analog-like sound that's often described as natural and organic.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Our greatest asset to innovation and quality can be summed up with in-house design and manufacturing. With a unique understanding of all of the technologies involved in designing a DAC, we are able to craft the world's most advanced ladder DAC technologies with the Cascade's MKII Hybrid DAC Modules. No part is left to external vendors or agencies who wouldn't fully grasp or value our same focus on performance.

You can take a virtual tour of our complete in-house manufacturing facility on our website, and see the care that goes it making every product we craft: https://msbtechnology.com/about-msb/

What's your approach to customer support?

Our patrons should contact their local dealer first and foremost with any needs. That being said, the MSB owners are always directly available through our website contact form or on our dedicated forum. We are a small group of designers and engineers and have decided to remain directly accessible for questions and audio discussions. Our down to earth approach means joining a community first and foremost when you become an MSB owner. For any support or service related inquiries, we have a direct form on our website: https://msbtechnology.com/support/repairs/

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

We test and listen to a very diverse set of music while developing products. These are perhaps not the best showcase, but If I had to pick three tracks that I am currently enjoying while developing the Sentinel DAC, they would be the following.

  • Your Power - Billie Eilish
  • The Line - Twenty One Pilots
  • I See Fire - Ed Sheeran

I really do listen to what I am enjoying first and foremost and ensure the system is feeling emotional and impactful. The best music to showcase is the music you enjoy! Our products showcase it all.

What other products pair best with yours?

I always love to promote pairing our system with the most revealing loudspeakers possible. We have been having great success with the Estelon Forzas and the Magico M2's.
