What's unique about the brand

ZMF is a boutique hifi headphone brand that crafts one-of-a-kind wooden headphones from stabilized resin-wood billets, each harvested, processed, and assembled in the USA. Their patented acoustic systems include the Atrium Damping System (ADS) and the Caldera's trapezoidal magnet structure. The brand offers lifetime driver warranties and maintains measurement transparency using professional B&K equipment. They have created a distinct enthusiast culture around their annual "ZMF November" limited-edition sales.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • ZMF Headphones are hand-crafted, using a wide array of wood choices, some of which are limited edition, making each headphone visually unique and potentially contributing to subtle sonic differences in decay and impact.
  • The brand is committed to providing a personalized audio experience, offering a variety of interchangeable pads, allowing users to tailor the sound to their preferences.
  • They offer a lifetime driver warranty on many of their products.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "The ZMF's Atrium's volumetric cube—sound stage—is immense and challenges all electrostatics heard to date in the areas of import, namely depth, width and height. The Atrium's abilities to position, layer, and provide spaciousness and air are those of an electrostatic headphone and not merely electrostatic-like." (https://www.audiokeyreviews.com/the-reviews/zmf-atrium)
  • "So incredibly immersive, so beguiling that it is as if the sound, the music rendered by the ZMF Véríté moves directly into one's heart and soul, while keeping the left brained—the technologists/engineers/audiophiles—fully engaged. And it will not be necessary to access the heights of such component combos to gain an understanding of the prowess of the ZMF Véríté." (https://www.audiokeyreviews.com/the-reviews/zmf-verite-open)
  • "If you want a headphone with a ton of snap and immediacy, Vérité will absolutely knock your socks off with its beryllium drivers. This thing is lightning fast and this speed boosts several aspects of the sound, lending a sharp sense of imaging and a crystal-clean sense of clarity to every note." (https://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1218/ZMFVeriteOverEarHeadphone_Review.htm)
  • "The headline here is the extreme inner resolution and ultra-accurate dynamics approaching that of the Focal Utopia. Great separation and a vast soundscape approaching that of the HD800." (https://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1218/ZMFVeriteOverEarHeadphone_Review.htm)

Auteur Classic Upgrade

  • Positioning: An affordable retrofit option designed to enhance the original headphone's soundstage and resolution.
  • Description: Offers a refreshed driver set with a larger stage, improved linear sub-bass, and lower distortion through features like the new wood baffle and Atrium Damping System. Stands apart from stock models by providing a cost‐effective, engineering driven upgrade that boosts performance without replacing the entire headphone system.

BOKEH Open

  • Positioning: An open-back, semi-portable headphone made for easy driving and versatile listening environments.
  • Description: Features a unique design with solid wood grilles made from SpectraPly, an exclusive oval cup formation, and the Atrium Damping System paired with specially developed Caldera pads for a balanced soundstage. In comparison to upgrade offerings and fully closed designs, it prioritizes portability and natural material aesthetics while retaining a refined open acoustic profile.

Vérité Open

  • Positioning: A high-fidelity open headphone that emphasizes natural sound reproduction and dynamic range.
  • Description: Uses an angled, deeply inset vapor-deposited beryllium driver design paired with premium sapele wood construction to deliver a true-to-life musical decay and heightened dynamics. Compared to the Auteur and BOKEH models, its focus is on delivering a transparent and authentic acoustic reproduction.

Atrium Closed

  • Positioning: A closed-back headphone engineered to create a well-controlled, intimate listening space with precise damping.
  • Description: Uses an atrium-tuned biocellulose driver along with a patent-pending damping system and carefully chosen wood accents like Cherry or Canarywood to maintain clarity without deadening the sound. In contrast to open designs such as the Vérité and BOKEH, it offers enhanced isolation and a controlled acoustic environment tailored for private or noisier settings.

Caldera Closed

  • Positioning: The premium fully closed planar headphone that integrates advanced damping and patented technologies.
  • Description: Features a 2 µm thick planar magnetic driver with CAMS technology, the patented Atrium Damping System, and an innovative Caldera Pad design that enhances sub-bass performance and isolation. Compared to the other models, it delivers a flagship level closed-back experience.

About the brand

Meze Audio is a hifi brand known for their unique Rinaro Isodynamic Hybrid Array driver technology, which provides an immersive sound experience with a frequency range of 3 Hz to 112 kHz. Their headphones feature distinctive design elements like black walnut wood ear cups and detachable magnetic ear pads, setting them apart from typical plastic or metal designs in the premium headphone market.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Our strongest differentiator is adding the comfort element to the equation. Most headphone models are focused only on technological advancements, forgetting that comfort and ease of wear are also very important factors when choosing an object that you intend to wear for hours on end.

That is why our headphones are specifically designed to be lightweight and to combat any pressure points that can occur when wearing them for long periods of time.

What's your approach to customer support?

Our clients have the possibility to contact either the dealers/distributors or our support department directly, through our support page: https://mezeaudio.com/pages/contact.

Our headphones are designed to be fully serviceable, so every part is easy to change, in case there’s an issue. There is no glue, just nuts and bolts, so anyone can change any part of the headphone with just a screwdriver.

We are quick to solve any problem as soon as it occurs and in some instances, we do go above and beyond to help our customers. One time, I remember someone was actually wondering if our 109 PRO model's ear cups are really made of wood, so we disassembled a unit, removed the ear cups, broke them into pieces and sent him pictures with the wood pulp, to show that we do use real wood, haha!

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

My favourites would be (not necessarily in this order): Sevdaliza - Bluecid, Isaac Gracie - Silhouette of you, and lately, Sleep Token - Damocles or Caramel.

What other products pair best with yours?

Thankfully, there are a lot of good products on the market that have strong synergy with our products, and we are fortunate enough to have great partners in the industry to pair our headphones with.

We also received very good feedback from our customers testing the pairings at different trade shows, and they prefer the following: Chord Dave, Feliks Envy, Ferrum Wandla + Oor + Hypsos combo, the DCS Lina stack, Auris Headonia, Linear Tube Audio Aero + Velo combo, and many many more, these is just top of the mind.
