What's unique about the brand

Linear Tube Audio uses ZOTL technology, invented by David Berning, which eliminates traditional audio output transformers for clearer sound and operates tubes at lower currents to extend their life to 10,000-20,000 hours. Their amplifiers are known for extremely low noise levels and work well with both high-efficiency speakers and headphones, while featuring a distinctive clear acrylic top that shows the internal components.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • Linear Tube Audio utilizes David Berning's patented ZOTL technology, a unique circuit design that eliminates the need for traditional output transformers, reducing distortion and resulting in a transparent and realistic sound.
  • They offer versatile products, often combining preamp, headphone amp, and speaker amp functionalities into a single chassis, catering to various listening preferences and system configurations.
  • LTA amps are characterized by their low noise floor, enabling the retrieval of subtle details and creating a sense of aliveness in the music.
  • Handmade in the USA with premium components, Linear Tube Audio products blend high-end sound quality with an elegant and functional design, often featuring a chassis designed by Fern & Roby.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "Here is where I'm really impressed- the Lineartube Audio Z40+ has some of the cleanest high-frequency representation I've heard, introducing detail, air, and shine that adds sparkle and life into any musical piece, but leaves behind the harsh qualities that'll cause listening fatigue." (https://www.audiostance.com/lineartube-audio-z40-review)
  • "The Z10e renders incredible clarity and detail across the fullness of the frequency spectrum and yet brings a natural musicality, a sunlit transparency, a richness, and a three-dimensionality that is truly captivating." (https://www.audiokeyreviews.com/the-reviews/ltaz10e)
  • "The Linear Tube Audio MZ3 in my system delivered the most engaging playback I have heard at home. This level of transparency to source could inspire hyperbole." (https://twitteringmachines.com/review-linear-tube-audio-mz3)
  • "The MZ3 delivers remarkable immediacy, convincingly real tone, dimension, speed and scale that bests every amp I have had here. It takes the talents of the MZ2 and strengths of the ZOTL circuit, and pushes them further." (https://twitteringmachines.com/review-linear-tube-audio-mz3)
  • "Well the LTA ZOTL MK3 is even quieter, more detailed and is the most natural-sounding amp I have ever heard. It has the same see-through quality into the layers of the music, but the scale of the instruments is even more natural, and it has an even better tone." (https://theaudiobeatnik.com/reviewing-the-microzotl-mz3-integrated-amp-from-linear-tube-audio)
  • "The Z40 exhibits the same midrange mastery, while having exceptionally wide frequency response, and a neutral-naturalness that I do not remember from other EL-34 amps I've heard. Rather than coating the signal in saccharin, the Z40 manages a rich colorful midrange, and beautiful tonal texture, while still being highly transparent." Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We’re an Italian company that sources everything as locally as possible. Italian through and through—everything we do is done here in Italy. Italian gear really does have its own sound. Sounds more romantic, less analytical. Very listenable. Low levels of ear fatigue.

We’re still hand making tube amps and continually refining them. New innovations in grounding, such as each component being grounded independently so they're really quiet as far as tube amps go, is an ongoing focus—always evolving mature tech.

But we also have new modern tech that's a hybrid of solid state and tube—to give you the best of both worlds. You can run pretty much any speaker you want.

In short, it’s a really easy to listen to sound.

What's your approach to customer support?

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Opera speakers are a great pairing because they're under the same parent company . When Unison is voicing their amps, they use Opera speakers, and vice versa.

However we've had no issues with pairing with Unison research. (But if you're looking at tube gear, you do have to be more careful because you do need a more sensitive speaker.)

In fact, are your speakers very technical? Pairing with Unison Research can help tame that a bit.

About the brand

Pathos Acoustics is known for its InPol technology, which combines tube pre-amplification with solid-state amplification to create a distinctive warm yet powerful sound. The brand stands out in the hifi market for its striking visual designs that blend wood and aluminum, while using both tubes and transistors in their amplifiers to achieve their signature sound.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Pathos stands out for two fundamental elements that represent our identity: technological innovation and design philosophy.

The first is INPOL, our exclusive patented technology: a hybrid circuit that combines the warmth and musicality of tubes with the strength and precision of MOSFETs. The tubes shape the sound in terms of amplitude, offering transparency and naturalness, while the MOSFETs provide the current needed to drive the speakers, working in pure Class A, without distortion or feedback. The result is a dynamic, detailed sound that is incredibly faithful to the original. With the evolution of DOUBLE INPOL, this philosophy reaches higher power and even more refined performance, while maintaining the sonic character that defines us.

The second is our choice to remain true to the essence of sound and the true meaning of “Made in Italy.” Every one of our products is designed and built in-house at our facility in Vicenza: from the electronics to the processing of aluminum and wood, to the painting, every phase is closely overseen by our team with artisanal care and obsessive attention to detail. We don’t just build amplifiers: we create unique objects, designed for those who seek an authentic, thrilling listening experience, without compromise, where beauty, technique, and passion coexist in perfect balance.

What's your approach to customer support?

In general, the ideal procedure is for the end user to contact their retailer or local distributor, who are always the first points of reference. However, it often happens that customers reach out to us directly: depending on the situation, I either direct them to our partner or assist them personally.

What truly matters to us is that the customer feels listened to and taken care of. That’s why, even remotely, I often personally handle support cases: not due to a lack of trust in our distributors – with whom we have excellent relationships – but to show that every customer is important to us. We know that our amplifiers have a value that goes beyond the cost: they represent a passion, a conscious choice, often a dream come true. And those who own them have every right to feel in good hands.
