What's unique about the brand

Thöress is a hifi brand known for its unique EHT Topology, which combines single-ended triode tubes with MOSFET output stages in Class-A mode, setting it apart from typical tube amplifiers through its transparency rather than warmth. The brand's products feature a distinctive vintage laboratory aesthetic with German labeling, and include the Phono Enhancer, which lets users adjust equalization curves on-the-fly without conventional tone controls.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • They draw heavily from classic professional audio design, with a clear emphasis on functionality and a vintage aesthetic reminiscent of 1950s and 60s laboratory equipment.
  • Thöress uniquely combines tubes with carefully chosen solid-state components like MOSFETs and Schottky diodes to optimize tube performance and minimize noise, rather than adhering to a strictly tube-only design.
  • Almost all inductive components, including power, output, and MC step-up transformers, are hand-wound in-house, allowing for precise control over their specifications and performance.
  • Rather than using a printed circuit board (PCB), Thöress amplifiers are assembled point-to-point, which Reinhard believes is a superior approach for the large parts, high voltages, and need for ventilation in tube circuits.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "Transparency, effortless and open image, vividness, euphony and intimacy on demand are properly descriptive measures and that's not it yet, still. How Thoress F2A11 gets the job done in terms of individual instruments, how it shapes and places these in virtual space, what picture it paints in general, well, these are the case and lead to a truly magnificent outcome, difficult to fully dress in words." (http://hifiknights.com/reviews/amplifiers/thoress-f2a11-2)
  • "The sound of the EHT Mono is therefore characterized by incredible saturation. Something like this is difficult to achieve in audio, regardless of whether transistors or tubes are in play." (https://positive-feedback.com/reviews/hardware-reviews/thoress-eht-amplifiers)

F2A11 INTEGRATED

  • Positioning: A compact integrated amplifier suited for small room applications and modest budgets.
  • Description: Uses the vintage F2A11 tube in single-ended triode mode to deliver a simple 2×6 watt output ideal for minimal setups. Compared to the DF and EHT models that offer additional functions and higher power, this unit is best for users focused on basic performance without extra features.

DF AMPLIFIER

  • Positioning: A versatile dual function amplifier that combines line control with headphone driving.
  • Description: Features a minimalist vacuum tube circuit with a triode gain stage followed by a current buffer that supports low impedance loads, ensuring flexible connectivity. Compared to the entry-level F2A11 with its simple integrated design, the DF amplifier adds tone control and remote volume features for users needing extra functionality.

FULL FUNCTION PREAMPLIFIER

  • Positioning: A versatile preamplifier offering both line control and a built-in tube phono equalizer.
  • Description: Integrates a tube phono equalizer with a refined line amplifier circuit to process signals accurately. In contrast to the simpler integrated F2A11 and dual-purpose DF, this model is tailored for buyers who prioritize advanced tonal control for vinyl and line-level signals without a built-in power section.

EHT INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER

  • Positioning: An integrated amplifier combining tube warmth with solid-state drive for challenging speaker loads.
  • Description: Uses a single-ended hybrid triode topology that combines a vacuum tube section with MOSFET technology to deliver 2×20 watts and low output impedance. Compared to the F2A11 and DF designs, the EHT offers advanced drive and display of modern hybrid technology.

SE845 MONO AMPLIFIER

  • Positioning: A high-end monoblock amplifier designed for refined, powerful performance.
  • Description: Uses the well-known 845 power tube in a single-ended triode configuration with a custom dual-winding transformer that ensures precise control and low distortion. Compared to the preamplifier and EHT models, the SE845 is aimed at buyers who need robust, high-performance amplification.

About the brand

Linear Tube Audio uses ZOTL technology, invented by David Berning, which eliminates traditional audio output transformers for clearer sound and operates tubes at lower currents to extend their life to 10,000-20,000 hours. Their amplifiers are known for extremely low noise levels and work well with both high-efficiency speakers and headphones, while featuring a distinctive clear acrylic top that shows the internal components.

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We’re an Italian company that sources everything as locally as possible. Italian through and through—everything we do is done here in Italy. Italian gear really does have its own sound. Sounds more romantic, less analytical. Very listenable. Low levels of ear fatigue.

We’re still hand making tube amps and continually refining them. New innovations in grounding, such as each component being grounded independently so they're really quiet as far as tube amps go, is an ongoing focus—always evolving mature tech.

But we also have new modern tech that's a hybrid of solid state and tube—to give you the best of both worlds. You can run pretty much any speaker you want.

In short, it’s a really easy to listen to sound.

Opera speakers are a great pairing because they're under the same parent company . When Unison is voicing their amps, they use Opera speakers, and vice versa.

However we've had no issues with pairing with Unison research. (But if you're looking at tube gear, you do have to be more careful because you do need a more sensitive speaker.)

In fact, are your speakers very technical? Pairing with Unison Research can help tame that a bit.

About the brand

Pathos Acoustics is known for its InPol technology, which combines tube pre-amplification with solid-state amplification to create a distinctive warm yet powerful sound. The brand stands out in the hifi market for its striking visual designs that blend wood and aluminum, while using both tubes and transistors in their amplifiers to achieve their signature sound.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Pathos stands out for two fundamental elements that represent our identity: technological innovation and design philosophy.

The first is INPOL, our exclusive patented technology: a hybrid circuit that combines the warmth and musicality of tubes with the strength and precision of MOSFETs. The tubes shape the sound in terms of amplitude, offering transparency and naturalness, while the MOSFETs provide the current needed to drive the speakers, working in pure Class A, without distortion or feedback. The result is a dynamic, detailed sound that is incredibly faithful to the original. With the evolution of DOUBLE INPOL, this philosophy reaches higher power and even more refined performance, while maintaining the sonic character that defines us.

The second is our choice to remain true to the essence of sound and the true meaning of “Made in Italy.” Every one of our products is designed and built in-house at our facility in Vicenza: from the electronics to the processing of aluminum and wood, to the painting, every phase is closely overseen by our team with artisanal care and obsessive attention to detail. We don’t just build amplifiers: we create unique objects, designed for those who seek an authentic, thrilling listening experience, without compromise, where beauty, technique, and passion coexist in perfect balance.

What's your approach to customer support?

In general, the ideal procedure is for the end user to contact their retailer or local distributor, who are always the first points of reference. However, it often happens that customers reach out to us directly: depending on the situation, I either direct them to our partner or assist them personally.

What truly matters to us is that the customer feels listened to and taken care of. That’s why, even remotely, I often personally handle support cases: not due to a lack of trust in our distributors – with whom we have excellent relationships – but to show that every customer is important to us. We know that our amplifiers have a value that goes beyond the cost: they represent a passion, a conscious choice, often a dream come true. And those who own them have every right to feel in good hands.
