What's unique about the brand

McIntosh is one of the most iconic amplifier brands in the world, recognizable for its signature blue LED displays and distinctive industrial design. With a legacy spanning decades, McIntosh is known to many, even outside the audiophile community, and is sold in both mass-market retailers and specialized hifi stores. Their amplifiers are characterized by a warm, tube-like sound that enriches the midrange and smooths out the overall tonal balance.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • McIntosh products blend classic, retro aesthetics, reminiscent of their 1970s designs, with modern materials and cutting-edge internal components, offering a unique visual appeal.
  • The brand's amplifiers are known for their substantial power output, often exceeding specifications, and their ability to drive a wide range of speakers across varying impedance levels due to their unique Autoformer technology.
  • McIntosh offers a high degree of customization and control through features like multi-band equalizers, adjustable input sensitivity, and advanced settings accessible via dedicated apps or web interfaces.
  • They distinguish themselves with a focus on long-term reliability and customer satisfaction, with products built to last for decades and supported by a dedicated dealer network.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "When playing Roger Waters Amused to Death album through the Super 9's, it was literally a spooky 3-dimensional presentation. Now granted, imaging is a strong suit of the new DeVore's, but without good source components and amplification, you simply can't achieve this level of depth, dimension, and detail." (https://hometheaterhifi.com/reviews/amplifier/mcintosh-mc312-2-channel-solid-state-amplifier-review)
  • "The MC611s transcribe the record venue with such clarity and – when needed – limitless power output that listening sessions approaching live symphonic sound bring forth the dramatic contrasts just as composer Respighi intended to. Dynamic headroom? Gobs of it." (https://audiophilestyle.com/ca/reviews/mcintosh-mc611-amplifier-review-r805)
  • "Ray Brown's bass was astonishing, even more than usual, with big fingers plucking big strings and extracting a fully-formed sound that dissects everything that's going on in Ray Brown's magnificent performance. I've never heard Happy Coat sound better than this." (https://pt.audio/2020/02/02/mcintosh-mcd600-sacd-cd-player-review)
  • "Deep bass transients shows zero compression. Very impressive definition too; grip of the Gods capable of energizing the listening room without breaking so much as a drop of sweat." (https://www.enjoythemusic.com/superioraudio/equipment/0418/McIntoshMC611Review_Preview.htm)
  • "The detail and realism around every symbol and drum skin strike sounds so full of life it's as though I've transcended into the recording studio. What's more appealing though is how the MHA200 ties this detail into the melody of the piece, rather than overload your senses – it's a fine balance, that few strike so well." (https://audiograde.uk/review/mcintosh-mha200-headphone-amplifier-review)
  • "The MA7200 has a great deal of finesse to its sound, but with a lot of power to back up that finesse, with a very wide and deep soundstage, but more importantly some of the most embodied and solid images within that soundstage. You get a feeling of real, visceral human beings playing music in a three-dimensional space, but you also get a very good idea of the musical intent behind those musicians." Unison Research specializes in hybrid amplifiers that combine tube and solid-state technology, with their flagship Unico DM featuring a pure class A double tube stage paired with POWER MOSFET components. Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We’re an Italian company that sources everything as locally as possible. Italian through and through—everything we do is done here in Italy. Italian gear really does have its own sound. Sounds more romantic, less analytical. Very listenable. Low levels of ear fatigue.

We’re still hand making tube amps and continually refining them. New innovations in grounding, such as each component being grounded independently so they're really quiet as far as tube amps go, is an ongoing focus—always evolving mature tech.

But we also have new modern tech that's a hybrid of solid state and tube—to give you the best of both worlds. You can run pretty much any speaker you want.

In short, it’s a really easy to listen to sound.

What's your approach to customer support?

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Opera speakers are a great pairing because they're under the same parent company . When Unison is voicing their amps, they use Opera speakers, and vice versa.

However we've had no issues with pairing with Unison research. (But if you're looking at tube gear, you do have to be more careful because you do need a more sensitive speaker.)

In fact, are your speakers very technical? Pairing with Unison Research can help tame that a bit.

About the brand

Pathos Acoustics is known for its InPol technology, which combines tube pre-amplification with solid-state amplification to create a distinctive warm yet powerful sound. The brand stands out in the hifi market for its striking visual designs that blend wood and aluminum, while using both tubes and transistors in their amplifiers to achieve their signature sound.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Pathos stands out for two fundamental elements that represent our identity: technological innovation and design philosophy.

The first is INPOL, our exclusive patented technology: a hybrid circuit that combines the warmth and musicality of tubes with the strength and precision of MOSFETs. The tubes shape the sound in terms of amplitude, offering transparency and naturalness, while the MOSFETs provide the current needed to drive the speakers, working in pure Class A, without distortion or feedback. The result is a dynamic, detailed sound that is incredibly faithful to the original. With the evolution of DOUBLE INPOL, this philosophy reaches higher power and even more refined performance, while maintaining the sonic character that defines us.

The second is our choice to remain true to the essence of sound and the true meaning of “Made in Italy.” Every one of our products is designed and built in-house at our facility in Vicenza: from the electronics to the processing of aluminum and wood, to the painting, every phase is closely overseen by our team with artisanal care and obsessive attention to detail. We don’t just build amplifiers: we create unique objects, designed for those who seek an authentic, thrilling listening experience, without compromise, where beauty, technique, and passion coexist in perfect balance.

What's your approach to customer support?

In general, the ideal procedure is for the end user to contact their retailer or local distributor, who are always the first points of reference. However, it often happens that customers reach out to us directly: depending on the situation, I either direct them to our partner or assist them personally.

What truly matters to us is that the customer feels listened to and taken care of. That’s why, even remotely, I often personally handle support cases: not due to a lack of trust in our distributors – with whom we have excellent relationships – but to show that every customer is important to us. We know that our amplifiers have a value that goes beyond the cost: they represent a passion, a conscious choice, often a dream come true. And those who own them have every right to feel in good hands.
