What's unique about the brand

Trafomatic Audio is unique for crafting its own transformers in-house, which gives them complete control over their amplifiers' sound quality. The brand stands out for using uncommon materials like Panzerholz (hyper-compressed plywood) for resonance control and rare tube types like the Elmac 250TL direct heated triode power tube in their designs.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • Trafomatic is known for designing and hand-winding its own transformers, enabling precise control over the final sound characteristics of its amplifiers.
  • Trafomatic's amplifiers, particularly the Primavera, are designed for tube rolling, providing comprehensive options and improving overall audio experience.
  • The brand offers a highly customizable experience, allowing customers to request specific RAL colors and gold or silver knobs/feet, for a personalized aesthetic.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "When paired with high-sensitivity models, the Trafomatic Rhapsody earns the most glowing testimony I can bestow on a product by simply stating one fact: my first listening session ran for seven uninterrupted hours. Yes, seven." (https://audiophilepure.com/2024/02/07/trafomatic-rhapsody-integrated-amplifier-review)
  • "Just a few bars into music played on the Trafomatic Audio Rhapsody, and you know just what the 300B is capable of, and we've been sold a lie about its bass. This tube is capable of great speed and refinement, but both aspects extend further than you ever thought possible." (https://hifiplus.com/articles/trafomatic-audio-rhapsody)
  • "And now I have to retrace my steps because the Rhapsody is one of those amplifiers that sounds so damn lovely, it makes you reconsider everything you thought you knew about audio. Thanks to the Rhapsody." (https://hifiplus.com/articles/trafomatic-audio-rhapsody)
  • "The Trafomatic Head 2 sound in one word: Vibrant. The Trafomatic is one of the most dynamic and lively sounding amplifiers that I have heard." (https://headphone.guru/the-trafomatic-audio-head-2)
  • "It's incredibly linear in its presentation, but so incredibly mean and impactful down low. It changed everything I knew about HD800S before and I wish I would be gravely exaggerating right now, but I'm not." Evolution Phono One

  • Positioning: The entry-level model aimed at basic vinyl playback setups.
  • Description: Uses an OP AMP design with separate MM and MC inputs and selectable impedance to ensure low noise performance. Compared to tube-based or high-power models in the lineup, its straightforward design suits smaller rooms and modest budgets with minimal functionality needs.

Tara 30A

  • Positioning: A balanced tube preamplifier crafted for refined audio reproduction at a moderate price point.
  • Description: Features Emission Labs 30A tubes, dynamic balance adjustment and an extremely low output impedance for precise channel matching. Compared to the entry-level Evolution Phono One, it adds tube warmth and detailed control, though it remains less complex than higher-powered amplifiers like EOS+ or flagship systems.

EOS+ Power Amp

  • Positioning: A dual mono power amplifier engineered to deliver high power for demanding speaker systems.
  • Description: Uses push-pull design with KT150 tubes and tuned negative as well as cathode feedback, resulting in well-controlled bass and a dynamic response. In contrast to preamplifiers like Tara 30A, it provides substantial power output.

Elysium

  • Positioning: A flagship mono-block power amplifier built with state of the art tube circuitry for uncompromised sound quality.
  • Description: Uses pure Class A circuits with Eimac 250TL output tubes and a unique direct-coupled transformer setup to extract every subtle detail. Compared to the EOS+ Power Amp which focuses on power output, it offers a more refined sonic character.

Rhapsody

  • Positioning: An integrated amplifier representing the highest achievement in valve amplifier design.
  • Description: Features 300B valves in a parallel single-ended Class A configuration to produce natural tonality and rich coloration with unified performance. Compared to standalone preamplifiers or power amplifiers, its all-in-one design delivers exceptional technical sophistication.

About the brand

Linear Tube Audio uses ZOTL technology, invented by David Berning, which eliminates traditional audio output transformers for clearer sound and operates tubes at lower currents to extend their life to 10,000-20,000 hours. Their amplifiers are known for extremely low noise levels and work well with both high-efficiency speakers and headphones, while featuring a distinctive clear acrylic top that shows the internal components.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We’re an Italian company that sources everything as locally as possible. Italian through and through—everything we do is done here in Italy. Italian gear really does have its own sound. Sounds more romantic, less analytical. Very listenable. Low levels of ear fatigue.

We’re still hand making tube amps and continually refining them. New innovations in grounding, such as each component being grounded independently so they're really quiet as far as tube amps go, is an ongoing focus—always evolving mature tech.

But we also have new modern tech that's a hybrid of solid state and tube—to give you the best of both worlds. You can run pretty much any speaker you want.

In short, it’s a really easy to listen to sound.

Opera speakers are a great pairing because they're under the same parent company . When Unison is voicing their amps, they use Opera speakers, and vice versa.

However we've had no issues with pairing with Unison research. (But if you're looking at tube gear, you do have to be more careful because you do need a more sensitive speaker.)

In fact, are your speakers very technical? Pairing with Unison Research can help tame that a bit.
