Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

The design of our turntables in the mid and high range relies on a very unique geometry that’s mathematically defined as the catenary curve, a shape that is found across nature (from spider webs to rope statistics) and firstly described by Galileo Galilei in the 17th century. The curve was first leveraged to design load-bearing structures such as arches and bridges since it offers the best rigidity/mass ratio. For turntables, it's an optimal as it provides really high rigidity with minimal mass giving the turntable great stability and resilience while minimising the amount of mass that could store potential energy (such as vibration). As a side effect, it creates a beautiful shape that elevates the design — this is a very Italian approach, developing creative solutions that serve boh performance and aesthetics.

Another key feature is the electric control of the motor leveraging a built-in power conditioning stage with a triple AC-DC-AC conversion to feed the motor with ultra-clean current, which is crucial as our turntables feature synchronous motors (calibrated on the AC).

Lastly, the design of the bearing/spindle is developed to achieve the strictest of tolerance with higher quality materials, and you won’t find similar designs on any turntables in the same price range since it’s extremely expensive to manufacture — it’s a core feature of our turntables that enables superior sound quality even though it’s completely hidden from the eye.

What's your approach to customer support?

We have a dedicated inbox for customer support [email protected] that is monitored 24/7 and a response time of around 24h. Customer should always contact Gold Note directly, our customer support will then manage their enquiry appropriately and put them in touch with the relevant contacts (such as our local distributor) if needed.

We used to rely primarily on our local partners in the past to provide quick support, however we have recently moved to a more centralised approach since we wish to establish a direct contact with our customers and ensure they get all the information directly from the source.

Today we can in fact guarantee fast response time and - since we are the manufacturer - more precise information to determine whether the product needs a simple firmware update, a hardware fix or a replacement.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Since we manufacture all sorts of sources — from turntable to streamers — we usually to suggest a mix of genres and it’s really hard to narrow it down to just three tracks:

For classical, we love "Dance of the Tumblers" from the Snow Maiden by the Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Eiji Oue (Reference Recordings,1998).

For electronic, our go to is "The Expert" by Yello (Polydor, 2021).

For jazz and vocals, it’s hard to pick between Cassandra Wilson’s "Strange Fruit" (Blue Note, 1995) and "Blues in My Heart” by Fiona Boyes (Reference Recordings, 2020).

What other products pair best with yours?

As a system manufacturer, we design our products to be part of a Gold Note system and therefore that’s the highest degree of synergy you can reach. The idea of designing full systems is generally frowned upon as the main objection inevitably is: if you design all sorts of products, how can you beat a specialist that only makes amplifiers?

The answer is somewhat counterintuitive and I believe it’s not fully understood by the public yet so I’ll briefly summarise it here — engineering audio systems is fundamentally to design ways to manage signals, whether digital or analogue. The knowledge compounds by researching all areas of signal transmission and amplification, and can then be used to improve on designing electronics, loudspeakers or tonearms.

For example: researching and designing a cable leads to gaining insights that can then be deployed when designing PCBs; R&D on phono stages where dealing with low voltage signals and ultra-low noise components will inform the design of amplifiers. This positive loop goes on affecting all areas and increasing the knowhow of the team, leading to better products.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Most probably the unorthodox approach to design, even when using off-the-shelf components: we love to think out of the box and give a personal view of the used components in order to reach the best sound quality for the budget. This takes us to the second appeal point for our products, which are always regarded as "sounding better than competitors' products costing more than twice as much."

What's your approach to customer support?

For warranty claims, usually, customers are required to contact the dealer who sold them the product: he's in charge for handling the claim. Whenever the warranty has expired, then the customer may either contact the dealer or directly M2Tech/Manunta. This usually happens with second-hand products. We ask customer to ship the product to Italy, we inspect it and propose a budget for repair/replacement.

Quite often, we also propose the customer to trade the old product for a newer one, usually with some addition by the customer. This is very useful with older products which are no longer reliably supported by Windows and no longer supported by MacOS. The customer is invited to take back a more recent product.

We are quite proud to state that we always service an old product, back to the ones released in 2009, to the extent this is possible, with regards to spare parts availability.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Well, that's hard to tell, as we have a listening panel made up of people with different tastes and experience. Personally, I often use a track by Tiger Okoshi from his XRCD Two Sides To Every Story, track No. 5: “Yuki No Furu Machi O.”

Another track I like for its openness in the middle-high range and the nice soundstage is “There'll Be Some Changes Made” from Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins’ Neck And Neck. But pay attention: I use the old Columbia CD, as all remasters I found on Qobuz and Tidal are dark and dull in comparison.

Finally, I'd mention another jazz track from a Red Records CD: The Next Step (Mantilla / Watson / Walrath / Mathews / Lundy / Lewis). It’s the first one on the CD: “Mantilla's Jam.” The entire CD is highly enjoyable, though. Then there are many more tracks, from CDs, LPs, and streaming.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We were started in the 80s by two audiophiles: a furniture maker and an English audiophile who took care of the engineering side of things. This combo permeates: Gorgeous Italian cabinetry and a serene, inviting English sound. Beauty and brawn.

We use third party drivers and cabinetry made specifically for us. Why? We laser focus on what we can uniquely do better than anyone else in hifi: integration, aesthetics, and sonics.

Our speakers are forgiving. They can give you detail and dynamics but will retain that beautiful, warm Italian sound that'll be compatible with poorly recorded tracks.

  • Pathos products, handmade in Italy, feature a distinct aesthetic that blends modern and classic design elements, utilizing materials like aluminum and wood in visually striking ways.
  • The brand's patented InPol (Inseguitore Pompa Lineare) technology combines the sonic characteristics of tubes and solid-state, aiming for a natural and engaging musical reproduction.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Pathos stands out for two fundamental elements that represent our identity: technological innovation and design philosophy.

The first is INPOL, our exclusive patented technology: a hybrid circuit that combines the warmth and musicality of tubes with the strength and precision of MOSFETs. The tubes shape the sound in terms of amplitude, offering transparency and naturalness, while the MOSFETs provide the current needed to drive the speakers, working in pure Class A, without distortion or feedback. The result is a dynamic, detailed sound that is incredibly faithful to the original. With the evolution of DOUBLE INPOL, this philosophy reaches higher power and even more refined performance, while maintaining the sonic character that defines us.

The second is our choice to remain true to the essence of sound and the true meaning of “Made in Italy.” Every one of our products is designed and built in-house at our facility in Vicenza: from the electronics to the processing of aluminum and wood, to the painting, every phase is closely overseen by our team with artisanal care and obsessive attention to detail. We don’t just build amplifiers: we create unique objects, designed for those who seek an authentic, thrilling listening experience, without compromise, where beauty, technique, and passion coexist in perfect balance.

What's your approach to customer support?

In general, the ideal procedure is for the end user to contact their retailer or local distributor, who are always the first points of reference. However, it often happens that customers reach out to us directly: depending on the situation, I either direct them to our partner or assist them personally.

What truly matters to us is that the customer feels listened to and taken care of. That’s why, even remotely, I often personally handle support cases: not due to a lack of trust in our distributors – with whom we have excellent relationships – but to show that every customer is important to us. We know that our amplifiers have a value that goes beyond the cost: they represent a passion, a conscious choice, often a dream come true. And those who own them have every right to feel in good hands.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We’re an Italian company that sources everything as locally as possible. Italian through and through—everything we do is done here in Italy. Italian gear really does have its own sound. Sounds more romantic, less analytical. Very listenable. Low levels of ear fatigue.

We’re still hand making tube amps and continually refining them. New innovations in grounding, such as each component being grounded independently so they're really quiet as far as tube amps go, is an ongoing focus—always evolving mature tech.

But we also have new modern tech that's a hybrid of solid state and tube—to give you the best of both worlds. You can run pretty much any speaker you want.

In short, it’s a really easy to listen to sound.

Opera speakers are a great pairing because they're under the same parent company . When Unison is voicing their amps, they use Opera speakers, and vice versa.

However we've had no issues with pairing with Unison research. (But if you're looking at tube gear, you do have to be more careful because you do need a more sensitive speaker.)

In fact, are your speakers very technical? Pairing with Unison Research can help tame that a bit.
