What's unique about the brand

Zu Audio is an American hifi brand that builds speakers using their unique Zu-Griewe technology, originally developed for motorcycle exhaust systems, to manage acoustic impedance and reduce standing waves. Their speakers feature a full-range driver design with no crossover network and are particularly efficient with tube amps, making them popular among rock music enthusiasts who appreciate their ability to handle high volumes without distortion.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • They employ a full-range driver design, often paired with a super-tweeter, to achieve a coherent and crossover-free sound across much of the frequency spectrum.
  • Zu speakers are known for their high efficiency, making them compatible with a wide range of amplifiers, including low-powered tube amps.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "The Soul VI with well recorded music though presents spaces that are huge and will layer out. It creates a believable world when you close your eyes, and its sound stage is so fixed and consistent that you really can trick yourself that you are moving into different spaces with every track." (https://positive-feedback.com/reviews/hardware-reviews/zu-audio-soul-vi-loudspeakers)
  • "Zu Audio's Soul VI is the first speaker since 2013 that made my jaw drop. It did so immediately, right out of the box, and it continues to do so with every listen." (https://positive-feedback.com/reviews/hardware-reviews/zu-audio-soul-vi-loudspeakers)
  • "The fidelity Soul 6 delivers is so right, so coherent that it carries and fills a space like a high value real instrument. Voices and instruments sound real, and to the size and scale of a live performance." (https://www.ecoustics.com/products/zu-audio-soul-6-loudspeakers)
  • "The new Zu Soul 6 puts out truly gripping life-like dynamics and irresistibly sincere tone. Textures bellow and flow without effort, dynamic contrasts dance and burst, all in perfect time and throughout your room and home." (https://www.ecoustics.com/products/zu-audio-soul-6-loudspeakers)
  • "To reinstate an old audiophile saying, the speakers fade away and just leave the music. A listen to the Zu Druid Mk. 6 is more music and less speaker, catching your attention from outside the framework of traditional boundaries and enlightening you to what could be, or what should have been." About the brand

Perlisten Audio's speakers feature a unique Directivity Pattern Control array that combines a beryllium tweeter with thin-ply carbon diaphragm midrange drivers to control sound dispersion and enhance imaging precision, and they're the first brand to achieve THX Dominus certification. Their speakers use proprietary thin-ply carbon diaphragm material that's 30% lighter than standard carbon fiber, with their DPC array designed to minimize floor and ceiling reflections while maintaining precise horizontal soundstage.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

As for as tech breakthroughs, we have our patented DPC array: a tweeter inside two midranges. This improves sensitivity and dynamics through such light drivers (3g or less).

Across our entire line, you’re getting 3D soundstaging, detail, dynamics, and low distortion. Most noticeable to the listener is the way sound propagates throughout the room: we focus on a wide dispersion left and right, and slightly limit it top to bottom to minimize first reflections on the floor and ceiling. This makes the speakers easier to place.

As you move up price in our line, the extent to which we do this passive beamforming on the vertical axis descends into a lower and lower frequency.

Perlistens are generally not difficult to run. Take the S7t for example: High 80s, low 90s sensitivity. That can run with anything. But, because Perlistens can play so loud, they do like a lot of power to fully show off.

Two brands we generally pair Perlisten with: On the upper end is Audioflight from Italy. On the budget friendly end, Primare. But they've been paired with so much—we haven't come across a pairing they don't work with unless it's a 3W triode tube amp due to insufficient power.
