What's unique about the brand

Buchardt Audio is a Danish speaker maker that sells direct to customers instead of through dealers and distributors. Many of its compact speakers use passive radiators for deeper bass than the cabinet size suggests, and waveguides that match the directivity of the tweeter and woofer for a wide, even soundstage. Its own workshop in Silkeborg makes many of the cabinets and stands from solid European wood. The active Anniversary 10, which is on our Best Active Speakers list, supports Mastertunings, downloadable DSP profiles that adapt the sound to the room and placement.

Brand overview

Steve Huff heard deeper bass on some tracks from the S400 MkII, a small stand-mount, than from his own Fleetwood speakers. Steve Guttenberg says "I love that speaker" and kept it as one of his references. Buchardt builds compact speakers that play far deeper than their size suggests. The key is a passive radiator, a cone with no motor of its own that moves with the air pressure inside the box. It does the job of a bass port, and Mads Buchardt says a ported S400 would need a noticeably bigger cabinet. Up top, a waveguide shapes the tweeter's sound to match the woofer's, and Trevor Butler of The Ear writes that this makes tweeter and woofer work as "one driver." He found the soundstage huge for the cabinet size. Buchardt suits listeners in ordinary rooms who want floorstander bass from a stand-mount.

The S400 MkII is the one to start with, and it wants a capable amplifier. John Alex Hvidlykke of LB Tech Reviews recommends plenty of power, and Butler found a Hegel H190 "proved a very happy combination." The smaller P300 needs the same care. Steve Huff says it sounds best with at least 100 watts per channel, and Guttenberg calls a foot from the wall behind the bare minimum and heard it sound better farther out. The step up is the active Anniversary 10, which has its own amplifiers built in. Guttenberg found it more transparent than the S400 MkII, with deeper and tighter bass, while the S400 MkII was more relaxed and kinder to harsh recordings. The A10 also takes Mastertunings, sound profiles loaded from a USB stick for setups like wall placement or use with a subwoofer. Mads Buchardt told Gordon Brockhouse of SoundStage! Simplifi that the Nearfield tuning was "my favorite tuning—for far field too." Buchardt sells direct with a 45-day home trial, so you can hear them in your own room.

Mads Buchardt is a musician who spent seven years selling instruments in a music shop. In 2008 he and his childhood friend Kasper Raun opened RABU Acoustics, an online shop for speaker builders named for their surnames. Raun was the engineer, and in 2011 he began the design that became the S300, aiming, as Mads tells it, to outperform anything at its price. Buchardt Audio launched in 2013, and Mads recalls a constant line outside its room at the Danish Hifi & Surround show at the Copenhagen Hilton in 2014. Passive radiators go back to the early S200, and the A500 active speaker won a 2020 SoundStage! Network Product of the Year award for Innovation in Design. The Anniversary 10 marked the tenth year in 2023 and was the first Buchardt built in Denmark, in solid wood. Eric van Spelde of Hi-Fi+ notes the brand's following among streaming listeners and amateur music producers, a younger crowd than most high-end stores see. Buchardt now makes many of its cabinets and stands from solid European wood in its own Silkeborg workshop.

Products overview

Buchardt speakers use waveguides that match tweeter and woofer directivity, so the sound stays wide and even around the room. The P300 is the entry model, and its passive radiator gives deep bass in a small room without a subwoofer. The Anniversary 10 is the midpoint, with built-in amplification and Mastertunings that adapt the sound to your room. The A700 LE tops the range, with extra 6 inch woofers that reach down to 19 Hz. The SUB10 subwoofer adds a compact 10 inch woofer for even more low bass.

  • Start here. Choose the P300 if you are on a tight budget and want a compact speaker that can work without a separate subwoofer.
  • Sweet spot. The S400 MKII gives you bass down to 33 Hz from a longer stroke woofer, which the P300 does not reach, and it suits a medium room.
  • All in. The A700 LE is priced well above the Anniversary 10 and adds extra woofers, so its optional cardioid tuning uses the rear woofer to cut room interference, giving cleaner bass and voices.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • Buchardt distinguishes itself by using a direct-to-consumer sales model, eliminating distributors and retailers, potentially offering a high level of performance for the price.
  • This brand offers "Mastertunings," DSP settings that allow users to customize the sound profile of their speakers for different room acoustics, placement options, or personal sound preferences.
  • Buchardt speakers often incorporate a passive radiator design to achieve deeper bass extension than typically expected from their cabinet size.
  • Their designs frequently emphasize a wide and evenly distributed soundstage, often incorporating waveguide technology to match the directivity of the tweeter and woofer.

Quotes we liked:

  • "The bass is remarkably fast, clear, and tight, extending to a specified 28 Hertz, with an astonishingly precise response of ±1dB and ±12dB. In all my years of reviewing speakers, I've never encountered a speaker this small that could deliver such high-quality bass." (https://7review.com/buchardt-a10-review)
  • "The most striking aspect of the A10, a compact speaker standing at less than 15 inches tall, is its exceptional bass performance. It's not just about the quantity of bass; it's the quality that sets it apart." (https://7review.com/buchardt-a10-review)
  • "Considering the size of the speakers, the bass they produce is absolutely incredible. They reproduce lower frequencies that most larger floorstanders can't, while still sounding incredibly clean and maintaining a well-controlled soundstage—something 2-way speakers typically struggle with when you crank up the volume." (https://the-ear.net/news/buchardt-audio-e50-masterpiece-speaker)
  • "The looks and style are pure quality and the sound… the sound… is beautiful, delicate, sweet, smooth and very airy. The treble is one of the stars here, as is the bass as these go down to 33hz due to the passive radiator in the back." (https://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2022/09/09/buchardt-s400-mkii-speaker-review-silky)
  • "I have not heard a speaker of this price sound this good, ever. This absolutely bests any speaker I have heard under $1k by a huge margin." (http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2023/01/05/the-buchardt-p300-speaker-review-low-high-end)

About the brand

Dynaudio's idea is to make its own drive units, from diaphragm to magnet, even for its entry-level speakers. The Danish company was founded in 1976 and builds its Heritage Special and Contour Legacy by hand in Skanderborg. The flagship Confidence range uses the Esotar 3 tweeter, whose Hexis inner dome damps resonance. Reviewers hear a smooth sound that suits long listening sessions. The Core and LYD ranges are studio monitors. The Emit range shares MSP cones with Evoke and suits smaller rooms, and the Special Forty is on our Best Bookshelf Speakers list.

About the brand

Bowers & Wilkins develops many of its own components in pursuit of a speaker that adds nothing to a recording and takes nothing away. The British company, founded in 1966 by John Bowers, pioneered Kevlar cones and developed the Matrix cabinet to cut resonance. The flagship Nautilus, built for dedicated listening rooms, uses tapered damping tubes to lower distortion. The 606 S3 and 603 S3 open the range with a Titanium Dome tweeter, and the 700 Series adds a Carbon Dome tweeter and Continuum cones. The Zeppelin is on our Best Wireless Speakers list.

About the brand

Larsen HiFi is a Swedish maker of Ortho Acoustic speakers, an approach created by sound engineer Stig Carlsson. John Larsen built Carlsson's speakers in Skillingaryd before launching the Larsen range with partner Anders Eriksson. The speakers are designed to integrate almost completely with the front wall, so they become a discreet part of the room. They use reflections from the room's surfaces as part of the sound, which the company says adds timbre and fullness. The Larsen 6 is the mid-priced model, and the Larsen 9 flagship has two upward-facing ambience tweeters.

About the brand

Zu Audio is an American speaker maker that builds around full-range drivers. A full-range driver covers much of the frequency band without a crossover in its path, and many models add a super-tweeter. The speakers are highly efficient, so they pair well with low-powered tube amplifiers. Some models use ZuGriewe and scatter plate internals to improve bass and midrange. The compact DWX has a front-firing port that suits confined spaces, and it is on our Best Speakers for Tube Amps list. The Definition 6 pairs two full-range drivers with a powered subwoofer section.

About the brand

Supravox is a French maker of full-range loudspeaker drivers and high-efficiency speakers. Its drivers use handmade paper cones and motors rated up to 98 dB, and many run with no crossover, which the company credits for phase coherence and realistic voices. The catalog spans the Classique, 2000, EXC and Héritage series, with Alnico and ferrite motors in sizes from 13 to 40 cm. The EXC drivers use field-coil magnets, so owners can tune the damping factor to their room by adjusting the external power supply. Cabinet plans are offered for builders alongside finished speakers.
