What's unique about the brand

Fyne Audio is a Scottish speaker maker, founded in 2017. Much of the range is built around its IsoFlare driver, which puts the tweeter inside the midrange and bass driver so all the sound leaves from one point. Many models add BassTrax, a downward-firing port with a Tractrix diffuser that spreads bass evenly and makes placement less critical. F1 series models have a presence control for tuning the upper midrange. The Vintage Classic Viii is highly sensitive, so it suits lower-powered amplifiers, and it is on our Classic Speakers Still in Production list.

Brand overview

Taron of A British Audiophile had played Fyne's Vintage Classic VIII for a couple of hours when his wife, in the kitchen about 7 or 8 meters away, said they sounded really good. Fyne builds its speakers around a driver it calls IsoFlare, with the tweeter mounted at the center of the larger cone, so all the sound leaves from one point. On an ordinary speaker the tweeter and woofer are at different heights, and their sound can fall out of step unless you sit in just the right spot. A point source, where everything comes from one place, avoids that, which widens the sweet spot and keeps the tone steady as you move around the room. Hans Wetzel of SoundStage! Ultra wrote of the F700, "This is not a bright-sounding loudspeaker, just forward." Jeff Dorgay of Tone found the F500SP "a touch forward in their presentation but not harsh or strident." Fyne suits listeners who want energy and presence, and even sound around the room.

The F500SP is a good way in. SP stands for Special Production, versions built at the Glasgow factory with parts from higher up the line, and Dorgay gave it an Exceptional Value Award in 2022. The F700 is the step up. Taron found it forgiving of amplification but advises against partners on the warm side of neutral, and Wetzel advises against forward or bright ones. If you own a low-power tube amp, look at the F704, which is efficient enough for one, though Fyne says a powerful transistor amp brings more dynamic punch. Fyne's BassTrax port fires downward onto a cone that spreads the bass in a full circle, which eases placement, and John Acton of Positive Feedback found the F1-8S free of bass bloat wherever he put it. Taron pulled the F700 about a meter from the wall, and Wetzel aimed his straight ahead with no toe-in. The F1 and Vintage Classic models add dials for treble energy and upper-midrange presence, so you can tune them to your room.

Fyne began in 2017 with five founders who had spent years at or alongside Tannoy, and Max Maud, one of them, says choosing the name took longer than the loudspeakers. They settled on Loch Fyne, near the company's home just outside Glasgow. Dr. Paul Mills, formerly Tannoy's engineering director, leads the design work, and the lineage shows. Tannoy, founded in 1926, is best known for its Dual Concentric driver, which places the tweeter behind the center of the bass driver, and Wetzel notes that the IsoFlare tweeter is also mounted well back, near the rear of the woofer's motor. The speaker that introduced Fyne was the F1-10 flagship, launched in 2017, and to mark ten years Fyne built a limited F1-10 Anniversary by hand in Scotland. Fyne describes Mills's Vintage series as a reimagining of 1970s speakers, and after reviewing the Vintage Classic VIII, Taron said British speaker building seems to be in good hands. Acton called the F1-8S "the most accomplished loudspeaker I've experienced."

Products overview

Most Fyne speakers use the IsoFlare driver, which puts the tweeter inside the midrange and bass driver so sound leaves one point, keeping imaging steady across the room. The F5E, under $1,000, has a 5 inch driver for small rooms. The F501 adds a second 150mm bass driver, reaching 36Hz for fuller bass in a medium room. The F1-12S uses a 300mm driver reaching 24Hz, so a large room gets deep bass.

  • Start here. Choose the F5E for a first Fyne in a small room, since it mounts on a wall, stand or shelf and BassTrax eases placement.
  • Sweet spot. The F500 suits a buyer stepping up from the F5E, with more amplifier headroom at 30 to 120 watts and reviewers praising its clarity and detail.
  • All in. The F1-12S is the top of the range and extends the F1-8S recipe with a larger driver and 96dB sensitivity against 91dB, so it plays louder from the same amplifier for buyers wanting the biggest F1.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • Fyne Audio utilizes a unique IsoFlare driver, employing a point-source configuration by integrating the tweeter within the midrange/woofer, improving time alignment and creating a more cohesive soundstage.
  • They implement a BassTrax porting system, using a downward-firing port coupled with a Tractrix cone diffuser to evenly disperse low frequencies into the room, reducing placement sensitivity.
  • Fyne Audio meticulously crafts its cabinets with curved baffles and high-density materials, combined with internal bracing to minimize unwanted resonances.
  • The brand offers a customizable sound experience through the inclusion of a "Presence" control, which subtly adjusts the frequencies in the 2.5kHz - 5kHz range, allowing for tailoring the sonic output to individual preferences and room acoustics.

Quotes we liked:

  • "I can't overemphasize how exciting it is to listen to these Fyne speakers. The pace, the bell-like clarity, the ribbon-like effortlessness from the midrange up was delicious, and I found myself eating it up." (https://www.soundstageultra.com/index.php/equipment-menu/1067-fyne-audio-f700-loudspeakers)
  • "With superior resolving powers, holographic imaging, and tonality that is spot-on neutral, the F1-8S disappears into the soundstage and brings music to life in a spellbinding manner, one that, once heard, is impossible to forget." (https://audiophilepure.com/2024/11/27/fyne-audio-f1-8s-loudspeaker-18000-review)
  • "There's something about the sound of the F702SPs that is immediately and then enduringly appealing. They deliver an arrestingly high level of dynamic expression and combine it with similarly top-drawer imaging coherence to generate that almost tactile sense of performer presence that marks out a well-performing speaker from an also-ran." (https://hifiplus.com/articles/fyne-audio-f702sp-floorstanding-loudspeaker)
  • "All of the Fyne's strengths—clarity without edge, natural tone color, resolution that conveys the subtlest shifts with ease, and their ability to disappear into music—brought me up close and personal to Springsteen's most up close and personal recording." (https://twitteringmachines.com/review-fyne-audio-vintage-classic-xii-floorstanding-loudspeakers)
  • "The Fyne Audio F1-8 is a gem of a loudspeaker that delivers on the promise of a time-aligned point-source design. To paraphrase Robert Schuman's sentiment regarding Schubert, everything the F1-8 touches turns to music." (https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/fyne-audio-f1-8)

About the brand

Falcon Acoustics is a British loudspeaker company, founded in 1972 by Malcolm Jones. At KEF, Jones did most of the design work on drive units such as the B110 and T27. Falcon now makes those drivers itself and uses them in a BBC-licensed LS3/5A, built to the original 1976 BBC specification and assembled by hand in Oxford. For buyers who want a floorstander, the M Series pairs Falcon drivers such as the B200 with Italian cabinets and a traditional voicing. The LS3/5A is on our Best Bookshelf Speakers and Classic Speakers Still in Production lists.

About the brand

Spendor is a British speaker maker, founded in 1969 by Spencer and Dorothy Hughes, whose names make up the brand. Spencer Hughes had been a BBC sound engineer, and his first speaker, the BC1, became a broadcast and studio monitor. Spendor still builds thin-walled cabinets with viscoelastic damping pads, designed to flex with the music, and makes its own drive units at its factory in South Yorkshire. The Classic series keeps the vintage look, and the compact A-line uses a Linear Flow port so it still sounds right close to a wall.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

First up: our 5th-generation Linear‑Flow (twin‑Venturi) port used in our D7.2 and D9.2 loudspeakers. Inspired by aerodynamics research, even F1 diffuser tech, it enables controlled airflow with reduced turbulence, giving you bass that’s tight, accurate, and uncoloured - even in smaller rooms or loudspeakers placed close to a wall.

Second: Again, used in our D-Line series, our LPZ tweeter paired with EP77 polymer cones. The LPZ tweeter uses a stainless-steel front plate and precision micro‑foil to create a linear, phase-correct output-imagine the clarity of a finely focused camera lens. That, together with our EP77 polymer mid/bass cones and Kevlar bass units, delivers Spendor’s unmistakeable clarity, neutrality, and musical realism.

What's your approach to customer support?

We encourage customers to reach out to their authorised Spendor retailer or distributor as the first point of contact. They’re well-equipped to help with setup, basic troubleshooting, and warranty queries. Most issues are resolved quickly at that level, and it keeps things local and convenient for the customer.

If there’s a more technical issue that needs our attention, the dealer will liaise directly with us here at Spendor. From our UK facility, we offer practical, honest support, whether that means supplying a replacement part, giving technical guidance, or handling a product return.

What we believe sets us apart is our personal, no-nonsense approach. We're a close-knit team, and that allows us to respond quickly and thoughtfully. If something goes wrong, we aim to make it right with minimal fuss and maximum clarity.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

I love this question! It’s hard to pick three, but here are our standing picks that can really show off what Spendor does best:

  1. “Hotel California” (Live – Eagles): Beautiful layering - acoustic guitar plucks, live room ambience, vocals - it’s a showcase for detail and atmosphere.
  2. “Royals” – Lorde: It’s all about that punchy, disciplined bass and beam‑straight vocals-excellent for revealing rhythm precision and the tweeter’s clarity.
  3. “Take Five” – The Dave Brubeck Quartet: Classic sax lines, brushed cymbals, piano timing-it tests imaging and rhythm on a new level.

What other products pair best with yours?

We design our loudspeakers to be honest and revealing, so we’re proud to say they work well with a wide range of quality electronics. That said, we’re always a little cautious about making specific recommendations. Taste in sound is personal, and what suits one listener may not suit another.

That said, over the years we've found that products from Naim, Cyrus, Exposure, Chord Electronics, and Auralic consistently complement our speakers. They bring out the musicality and natural balance that Spendor is known for, and together they create systems that are expressive, engaging, and a joy to listen to.

About the brand

Harbeth is a British speaker maker founded by H.D. Harwood, who had led loudspeaker development at the BBC. His 1977 HL Monitor used a polypropylene bass-midrange cone he had patented, the first of its kind. Under designer Alan Shaw, who took over in 1986, Harbeth developed its own RADIAL cone material, and its cabinets use thin walls with damped panels. They are easy to drive and work with both tube and solid-state amplifiers, and the compact P3ESR XD suits small rooms while the M40.3 XD flagship suits large ones.

About the brand

Tannoy is a British loudspeaker maker, founded in 1926 by Guy R. Fountain. Its defining technology is the Dual Concentric driver, introduced in 1947, which places the tweeter inside the woofer so every frequency leaves from a single point. Reviewers hear wide stereo imaging with a broad sweet spot and a bold, weighty bass. The company builds studio monitors and hifi speakers on the same idea. The GOLD 8 is a bi-amplified nearfield studio monitor, and the Stirling III LZ Special Edition has two treble controls so owners can tune it to their room.

About the brand

Neat Acoustics is a British speaker maker, founded in 1989 by Bob Surgeoner, a performing and recording musician. Its first design, the Petite, got a big, natural sound from a small cabinet, and every model since has been built by hand and tuned by ear in England. Many Neat speakers use ribbon tweeters and isobaric bass loading, which pairs two bass drivers for deeper bass from a smaller box. The tiny Iota and Iota Alpha suit desks and small rooms, and the flagship Ultimatum XL10 adds upward-firing super-tweeters.
