What's unique about the brand

EarMen is a European maker of portable and desktop DACs and headphone amplifiers, started by the team behind the tube amplifier brand Auris Audio. Its devices are compact and housed in CNC-milled aluminum. The brand favors fully balanced circuits, and many of its products double as preamps for a speaker system. The Eagle is a small USB DAC for listening on the go. The ST-Amp is a desktop DAC and headphone amplifier, and the portable TR-Amp is on our Best Portable DAC/Amps list.

Brand overview

Lory Hawley of HomeTheaterHifi.com found her Colibri at the end of a long second day at CanJam SoCal 2023. She showed EarMen's Miroslav Milovanović her AudioQuest Dragonfly, and he handed her a small black rectangle. Colibri means hummingbird, he told her later, and he joked that it got the name because hummingbirds eat dragonflies. EarMen builds small DACs and headphone amplifiers that punch well above their size, and the trick behind most of them is a balanced output. An ordinary headphone jack gives each earpiece one amplifier, while a balanced jack gives it two working together, which is why EarMen's balanced outputs deliver several times the power of their standard ones. EarMen uses the compact 4.4mm balanced plug even on its desktop gear. Paweł Szachno of Ear Fidelity says the brand has a house sound, and he calls the CH-Amp "a neutral tuning with a hint of natural warmth." EarMen suits listeners who want real power from a small box.

If you mostly use earphones with a phone, start with the Eagle, a simple dongle. Lachlan of Passion for Sound heard more ease and a better sense of layering from it than from AudioQuest's Dragonfly Red. For full-size headphones on the go, the Colibri is the better pick, because it carries its own battery and takes the load off your phone. To get the most from either, use headphones with a 4.4mm balanced cable. On a desk, the ST-Amp combines a DAC and amp, and a switch turns off its DAC so it becomes a plain amplifier. Aldous of Headfonics heard a "jump in clarity and resolution" that way, which makes it an amp to keep if you later add a separate DAC. The top step is the Tradutto DAC with the CH-Amp. Szachno suggests ordering a 4.4mm cable to link the two. The CH-Amp can also run a pair of active speakers and mutes them when you plug in headphones.

Milomir Trosic came to EarMen from building high-end tube amplifiers. Hawley writes that he wanted to reach a larger audience with portable DAC/amps, so he designed the EarMen products himself and based the company in Chicago. The products are made in Europe. The first two were the TR-Amp and the Sparrow. The Sparrow took aim at AudioQuest's DragonFly series, and Headfonia explained the name with "Because Sparrows eat…", a running joke the Colibri later picked up. The Tradutto DAC brought the awards. Ear Fidelity named it Best DAC 2021, Mono & Stereo gave it a 2022 Best Buy award, and Jay Garrett of StereoNET swapped it in for his Chord Qutest and called it "a skilled and compact DAC." Szachno first heard the stack at the Munich High End show in 2022 with Meze Elite headphones, and he says the sound completely blew him away. Paul Cash of HiFi Trends heard the CH-Amp and Tradutto present music so cleanly that "the headphones and components just got out of the way." EarMen now makes portable and desktop gear side by side, and Ear Fidelity calls the stack EISA award-winning.

Products overview

Every EarMen is a compact CNC-milled aluminum unit with fully balanced circuits, so balanced listening reaches even small models. The Colibri, the entry model under $500, has a 4.4mm balanced output in 51 grams, so a phone can drive IEMs. The TR-Amp adds a 6.3mm output and a 10 hour battery, so larger headphones play away from a desk. The CH-Amp adds 3.8W balanced power and a separate supply, so demanding headphones get desktop drive.

  • Start here. The Colibri suits a commuter on a tight budget who wants balanced sound from a phone and IEMs.
  • Sweet spot. The TR-Amp gives a listener a battery unit with a preamp output and 400mW at 16 ohms, which the Colibri does not offer, while the models above mostly add desktop power.
  • All in. The CH-Amp is priced well above the TR-Amp and extends the ST-Amp desktop recipe with 3.8W balanced power, so hard-to-drive headphones get far more power in reserve.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • EarMen offers products built with a strong emphasis on durability, utilizing CNC-milled aluminum chassis in compact designs for robust protection and a premium feel.
  • The brand offers fully balanced designs, ensuring signal integrity from source to output, and utilizes the topology even on single-ended signals for enhanced clarity.
  • They produce versatile components, often including pre-amp functionality and multiple input/output options, and catering to both desktop and portable usage scenarios.

Quotes we liked:

  • "They presented music with such a balanced delicacy and transparency, that the headphones and components just got out of the way, and I was engrossed solely by the music. Even at very low levels, the CH-Amp and Tradutto made the Hifiman headphones sing, allowing me to hear the distinct notes of each instrument in the song." (https://hifitrends.com/2023/05/04/earmen-ch-amp-tradutto-dac-review-a-bona-fide-hifi-audio-experience)
  • "The Colibri is bold and exciting, not laid back or relaxed, it is fast and agile with excellent timing and sharp transient attack. The bass is very tight and controlled with excellent layering, the mid range is crystal clear, rich and well articulated, the treble is luminous and full of energy while detail retrieval sits at the top of the competition, offering a very deep gaze into the recording without becoming too analytical." (https://ichos-reviews.com/earmen-colibri-review)
  • "I have to say this setup is amongst the best I've ever heard, and this includes offerings costing tens of thousands of dollars. I'm not saying this setup quite matched the holographic presentation or resolution of those endgame-type rigs, but it gave me much of the same "you are there" feeling I get from those setups for a lot less cash." (https://hifitrends.com/2023/05/04/earmen-ch-amp-tradutto-dac-review-a-bona-fide-hifi-audio-experience)
  • "The sound is full bodied with a weighty and impactful bass that has excellent control, it is fast, tight, and well defined with deep layering and very contrasted dynamics that add great realism to more demanding material like large scale symphonic works." (https://ichos-reviews.com/earmen-st-amp-review)
  • "One of the things that makes this DAC/AMP stand out the most is the purity of its sound. Angel is really clean, crisp, clear, crystalline and transparent." (https://hiendportable.com/earmen-angel-english-review)

About the brand

Geshelli Labs is a family-run American maker of DACs and amplifiers. The company makes its own circuit boards, coats its cases, cuts the wiring and assembles in house, with metal chassis from a local machine shop. Buyers choose cases in colored aluminum or wood with plexi face plates. Product names follow a house tradition of rearranging the letters of a person's name. The JNOG2 Socketed takes swappable opamps so owners can adjust the sound, and the company's modular DAC accepts plug-in DAC boards so it can be upgraded as new chips arrive.

About the brand

aune is a Chinese maker of DACs and headphone amplifiers. Its products start with the portable BU1 and the Yuki USB DAC and go up to the S9c Pro DAC and the S17 Pro. Many of its amplifiers use fully discrete Class A circuits with toroidal transformers, and reviewers describe the sound as warm, smooth and natural. Several models have swappable op-amps, so owners can change the sound to suit their taste. The cases often use an arc shape with the internal parts on view.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

DACs are relatively straightforward in concept, but creating a truly outstanding one takes a lot of effort. We do have some unique design philosophies for our DAC products. In the past, our DAC lineup has included many technical highlights—for example, our proprietary PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) technology. This ensures adaptive compatibility across different input sample rates while maintaining synchronization between the DAC and clock signal.Another key feature is that our DACs are designed with independent clock input interfaces from the outset. They can accept external clock signals and even allow seamless switching between internal and external clock sources without interrupting operation. While external clock input is typically reserved for high-end DACs, we insist on supporting it even in entry-level models. Our emphasis on clock signal handling is a major differentiator from our competitors. So if we were to expand on this topic, we’d certainly mention more than just two technical innovations.

What's your approach to customer support?

Generally speaking, our after-sales service policy recommends that users contact the dealer from whom they purchased the product. This is the most direct and convenient way to resolve issues—whether it’s for repairs or replacement due to product faults—allowing for the quickest resolution. This same policy applies to our official online stores. In most cases, we don’t recommend customers contact us directly, because it’s difficult to accurately demonstrate and identify issues without in-person evaluation. Direct communication with us may also lead to unnecessary delays or extra logistics costs and taxes. Working through the dealer allows for more efficient repairs or exchanges. That said, if users have questions about product usage, we’re absolutely happy for them to contact us directly for timely answers and technical support.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

What other products pair best with yours?

This is definitely a sensitive question, but we’re not surprised that it comes up. We respect how different brand designers interpret music reproduction, and we fully recognize that mixing and matching different brands is one of the biggest joys for audio enthusiasts. In fact, we often do this ourselves.

Aside from it being fun, it also helps us discover potential compatibility issues with our own products. For example, I think Violectric headphone amps pair quite well with our DACs. But we don’t recommend that people simply copy our choices. To achieve the sound we prefer, we often modify other brands’ gear to best match our products. Through this process, we also gain completely new design inspiration.

Just like others discover their own pairing experiences, we believe there’s no such thing as the “correct” sound—only the sound that aligns with your own preferences.

About the brand

LAiV is a Singapore maker of desktop hifi components, founded in 2023, with every product engineered in-house. The Harmony DAC and Harmony µDAC use discrete R2R resistor-ladder conversion. The Harmony µDAC won the EISA Best Value DAC award for 2026-2027. The Harmony µDDC reclocks digital audio with a femto clock and FIFO buffer before sending it out over galvanically isolated I²S. The Harmony HP2A is a balanced Class A preamplifier and headphone amplifier, and the Harmony LExt adds inputs to it. The modular design lets owners repair or upgrade a unit instead of replacing it.

About the brand

Gustard is a Chinese DAC maker based in Shenzhen that also builds amplifiers, preamplifiers, clocks and music streamers. Its converters put a lot of work into clocking, with femtosecond clocks and custom clock synthesizers to reduce jitter. Gustard uses its own digital filtering on models such as the X26III, and reviewers describe the house sound as smooth and natural. The DAC-X30 uses four ES9039SPRO chips in a quad-mono layout and has network streaming built in, so it needs no separate streamer. The DAC-R26 converts through a discrete R-2R ladder.
