What's unique about the brand

Dahlquist is an American speaker brand known for its phased array design. Instead of mounting every driver on the front of one box, it suspends the drivers in an open array to keep them aligned in phase, and the midrange is housed in a cylindrical, aperiodically loaded enclosure. Owners can get parts and service for Dahlquist speakers through the brand's website.

About the brand

Polk's idea is to carry technology from its flagship speakers down into affordable ones. The American company was started in Baltimore in 1972 by Matthew Polk, Sandy Gross and George Klopfer, and it still engineers its speakers there. Its signature technology is SDA, or Stereo Dimensional Array, which addresses the crosstalk between the ears that narrows a stereo image, and the Legend L800 uses it. The Reserve series brings Legend acoustic technology to more affordable models. Owners who want sound outdoors can look at the Atrium 6.

About the brand

NHT is an American speaker maker, founded in 1986, that builds its speakers around sealed cabinets instead of ports, which reviewers hear as taut, punchy bass. Its bookshelf speakers use a three-way design with a dedicated dome midrange for wider dispersion, and the C 3 also comes in a carbon fiber finish. NHT sells factory-direct. The SuperZero 2.1 suits small rooms or a surround system. The C 4 tower uses two 6.5-inch woofers for medium and large rooms, and the MS Tower adds Dolby Atmos for home theater.

About the brand

Argon Audio is a Danish hifi brand that designs its own products and ships them directly from the factory. The catalog covers speakers, turntables, subwoofers, amplifiers and headphones in a minimal Scandinavian style. The active Fenris and Forte speakers give each driver its own amplifier and use DSP correction, and many add HDMI ARC for a TV. Several turntables have a phono preamp built in. The Forte A4 WiFi streams over AirPlay 2, Google Cast and Spotify Connect, so it needs no separate streamer.

About the brand

Kanto is a Canadian maker of powered speakers, founded in 2007, with its design studio in Vancouver. Since the early 2010s its signature has been compact speakers in bright colors that need no receiver or separate amplifier. The YU4 and YU6 put a phono preamp inside the speaker, so a turntable can plug straight in. The TUK adds an Air Motion Transformer tweeter, which Kanto credits for its clarity, and the ORA is a small studio-style desktop pair. The TUK and YU6 are on our Best Powered Speakers for Turntables list.

About the brand

GoldenEar is an American speaker company, launched in 2010 by Sandy Gross. Its signature driver is the High-Velocity Folded Ribbon tweeter, and reviewers hear fine, dynamic treble that stays smooth. Many of its towers are semi-active, with a DSP-controlled powered subwoofer built into the cabinet, so the bass needs no extra amplifier and placement is more flexible. The T66 works this way and is on our Best Floorstanding Speakers list, while the Triton Five uses four side-mounted bass radiators.

About the brand

MartinLogan's idea is the CLS, or curvilinear line source, electrostatic panel, curved horizontally so high frequencies fan out across the room instead of beaming. The American company was started in Lawrence, Kansas, by Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland, whose middle names make up the brand. Its hybrid models pair the panel with powered woofers blended by DSP, and Anthem Room Correction can fit the bass to the room. Listeners who prefer cone speakers can choose the Motion series, built around Folded Motion tweeters.
