What's unique about the brand

Bowers & Wilkins develops many of its own components in pursuit of a speaker that adds nothing to a recording and takes nothing away. The British company, founded in 1966 by John Bowers, pioneered Kevlar cones and developed the Matrix cabinet to cut resonance. The flagship Nautilus, built for dedicated listening rooms, uses tapered damping tubes to lower distortion. The 606 S3 and 603 S3 open the range with a Titanium Dome tweeter, and the 700 Series adds a Carbon Dome tweeter and Continuum cones. The Zeppelin is on our Best Wireless Speakers list.

Brand overview

In 1980 John Bowers carried the first 801 into Abbey Road Studios to demonstrate it, and the studio has used B&W's 800 Series speakers ever since. The idea behind them is easy to see. In a top B&W, the bass, midrange and treble drivers each get an enclosure of their own, with open space around each one, so the cabinet adds as little sound as possible. Reviewers hear the result as clarity and precise placement. John Darko heard "laser guided delivery of instrument placement" from the 703 S3, and Steve Guttenberg called the 705 S3 "very, very clean." Terry Ellis of Pursuit Perfect System hears the 803 D4's midrange favoring "a leaner, more technically accurate sound." B&W suits listeners who want to hear into a recording and know where every player is standing.

The range has three tiers, and the tweeter is the quickest guide to them. The 600 Series is the entry point. In the 700 Series, several models put the tweeter in a pod on top like the 800s, and Andrew Robinson found the 703 S3 nearly as good as the 805 D4 in his room. The 800 Series adds a diamond tweeter and is built in Worthing, England, and Ellis calls the 803 D4 the sweet spot. Plan the amplifier along with the speakers, because the bigger models draw a lot of current, and Guttenberg suggests 200 watts a channel as a starting point for an 801 or 802. Darko found a Marantz Model 30 "a splendid match" for the 703 S3. Give them room, too. Robinson set his 801s well apart and out from the wall, pointed straight ahead, with the grilles off for serious listening.

The separate-enclosure idea began with the DM7 of 1977, which put the tweeter in its own enclosure on top, and the 801 of 1979 gave the midrange a head of its own as well. Abbey Road became the first studio in the world to use the 801 full time, and successive 800 Series models have been used in its control, mastering and transfer rooms since. B&W says the scores for Raiders of the Lost Ark, Aliens, the Lord of the Rings films and Skyfall were mixed on 801s there. In 2005 the 800 Series tweeter became a dome of synthetic diamond, grown from methane and hydrogen. At the very top of the high end, Andrew Robinson names Wilson's Watt/Puppy as the 801's one true rival and says the contest between the two brands has entertained hifi for decades.

Products overview

Every model comes from components the company develops itself, aimed at a speaker that adds nothing to a recording and takes nothing away. The 607 S3 opens the 600 Series with a Titanium Dome tweeter and a 5 inch Continuum cone. The 703 S3 adds a Carbon Dome tweeter, a separate midrange driver and twin bass cones, so a larger room gets deeper bass and clearer voices. The Nautilus uses tapered damping tubes to lower distortion in a dedicated listening room.

  • Start here. Someone on a tight budget who wants a bookshelf speaker from the brand gets the 607 S3, the least expensive speaker in the 600 Series.
  • Sweet spot. The 705 S3 gives a stand mount listener the Tweeter-on-Top housing from the 800 Series Diamond, which the 600 Series lacks, for a step up in build at under the price of any floorstander.
  • All in. The Nautilus is a statement piece priced far above the 800 Series and built on its own design, for the listener who wants the least distortion available from this brand.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • They consistently produce clear and crisp sound, often exceeding expectations for soundbars, making them a reliable choice for audio fidelity.
  • Bowers & Wilkins products, particularly soundbars, are known for their elegant and minimalistic designs, often featuring high-quality materials like Nappa leather, aluminum, and unique mesh fabrics. This blend of aesthetics and functionality aims to seamlessly integrate into any room decor.

Quotes we liked:

  • "The low frequencies the Bowers & Wilkins can generate are very deep, hit impressively hard, are beautifully shaped, packed with detail both broad and fine, and controlled so completely that they never even hint at dragging at a rhythm or a tempo. The bottom end fairly motors along here, underpinning everything above it, but never sticking its oar too far in." (https://www.t3.com/reviews/bowers-wilkins-px8-review)
  • "Midrange information is absolutely loaded with information, both broad and fine, regarding tone, timbre, texture and, in the case of vocalists, technique and character too. Communicative to an almost indecent degree, these Bowers & Wilkins headphones will make you realise a singer you thought enjoyed pretty sound technique is, in fact, right on the edge… if there's attitude or emotion to be revealed in a vocal line, the Px8 will hand it over in full." (https://www.t3.com/reviews/bowers-wilkins-px8-review)
  • "There's air and warmth from both mellotron, flugelhorn and clarinet, and even the edge beat on the snare drum has plenty of undertones. The voice of Sofie Tollefsbøl is almost magical as it hangs in the air like a ghost." (https://www.lbtechreviews.com/test/speakers/bowers-wilkins-801-d4)
  • "The defining characteristic of this system is something that was present in miniature with the 805D4. It's ability to combine enormous, visceral force without ever compromising on delicacy is a party piece that it is hard not to love." (https://www.avforums.com/reviews/bowers-wilkins-800-series-av-system-review.19691)
  • "Suddenly, you can hear the exquisite grain of the strings, which become imbued with a lovely natural timbre, as do the woodwind clarinet and flugelhorn. Likewise, the sound of the electric piano work is so delicate and authentic, and the tautness of the plucked double bass strings is a joy to behold." About the brand

Dynaudio's idea is to make its own drive units, from diaphragm to magnet, even for its entry-level speakers. The Danish company was founded in 1976 and builds its Heritage Special and Contour Legacy by hand in Skanderborg. The flagship Confidence range uses the Esotar 3 tweeter, whose Hexis inner dome damps resonance. Reviewers hear a smooth sound that suits long listening sessions. The Core and LYD ranges are studio monitors. The Emit range shares MSP cones with Evoke and suits smaller rooms, and the Special Forty is on our Best Bookshelf Speakers list.

About the brand

Larsen HiFi is a Swedish maker of Ortho Acoustic speakers, an approach created by sound engineer Stig Carlsson. John Larsen built Carlsson's speakers in Skillingaryd before launching the Larsen range with partner Anders Eriksson. The speakers are designed to integrate almost completely with the front wall, so they become a discreet part of the room. They use reflections from the room's surfaces as part of the sound, which the company says adds timbre and fullness. The Larsen 6 is the mid-priced model, and the Larsen 9 flagship has two upward-facing ambience tweeters.

About the brand

Aerial Acoustics is an American loudspeaker maker founded in 1991 by Michael Kelly and David Marshall. Its first speaker, the Model 10T, was Stereophile's Speaker of the Year in 1996, and every Aerial product is designed and assembled at its factory in Massachusetts. The cabinets are curved, laminated, thick-walled and heavily braced, and almost all the drivers are custom-made to Aerial's specifications, including modified ScanSpeak ring-dome tweeters. Among the floorstanders, the 5T suits small to moderate rooms, the 6T adds a dedicated midrange driver, and the 7T extends the bass for larger spaces.

About the brand

Zu Audio is an American speaker maker that builds around full-range drivers. A full-range driver covers much of the frequency band without a crossover in its path, and many models add a super-tweeter. The speakers are highly efficient, so they pair well with low-powered tube amplifiers. Some models use ZuGriewe and scatter plate internals to improve bass and midrange. The compact DWX has a front-firing port that suits confined spaces, and it is on our Best Speakers for Tube Amps list. The Definition 6 pairs two full-range drivers with a powered subwoofer section.

About the brand

Buchardt Audio is a Danish speaker maker that sells direct to customers instead of through dealers and distributors. Many of its compact speakers use passive radiators for deeper bass than the cabinet size suggests, and waveguides that match the directivity of the tweeter and woofer for a wide, even soundstage. Its own workshop in Silkeborg makes many of the cabinets and stands from solid European wood. The active Anniversary 10, which is on our Best Active Speakers list, supports Mastertunings, downloadable DSP profiles that adapt the sound to the room and placement.

About the brand

Supravox is a French maker of full-range loudspeaker drivers and high-efficiency speakers. Its drivers use handmade paper cones and motors rated up to 98 dB, and many run with no crossover, which the company credits for phase coherence and realistic voices. The catalog spans the Classique, 2000, EXC and Héritage series, with Alnico and ferrite motors in sizes from 13 to 40 cm. The EXC drivers use field-coil magnets, so owners can tune the damping factor to their room by adjusting the external power supply. Cabinet plans are offered for builders alongside finished speakers.
