What's unique about the brand

Cube Audio is a Polish speaker maker built around full-range drivers. Its speakers use these drivers without crossovers, and the drivers themselves use neodymium magnets, a cone shape of the company's own design and a proprietary spider suspension. The loudspeakers are handmade in Poland. Cube Audio also sells its drivers on their own, separate from the finished loudspeakers. The current loudspeakers include the Magus, the Jazzon v2 and the Lotus 10.

Products overview

Every model uses Cube Audio full range drivers without crossovers, so the music comes from one source in the room. Moving up mostly buys deeper bass. The Magus is the entry, reaching 38 Hz, enough for full bass in a smaller room. The Nenuphar v2 has a larger cabinet and reaches 28 Hz, so a bigger room gets deeper notes. The Lotus 10 adds a woofer and reaches 25 Hz, so the lowest notes carry more weight.

  • Start here. Choose the Magus if you want a first single driver system at the lowest price, with 92 dB efficiency that suits modest amplifiers.
  • Sweet spot. The Jazzon v2 lets you set efficiency between 88 and 92 dB to suit your amplifier and room, with bass to 35 Hz, while models above mostly add deeper bass.
  • All in. The Lotus 10 is priced well above the Nenuphar v2, and its added woofer takes bass down to 25 Hz, so listeners wanting the deepest, weightiest low notes get them.

About the brand

Gemstone is a Polish speaker maker based in Szczecin that builds its cabinets from concrete in place of wood or MDF. The company began in a workshop where it made its first speakers by hand, and its concrete speakers are still handmade. The textured concrete finish is meant for minimal, loft-style interiors, and buyers can order their pair in different colors. Gemstone demonstrates its speakers in its own listening room and shows them at the Audio Video Show in Warsaw.

About the brand

Chario is an Italian loudspeaker maker, founded in Milan in 1975, that designs and builds its own drivers and cabinets in Italy. Many cabinets use solid Italian walnut, often aged for long periods. Reversed vertical driver arrays and down-firing woofers work with the crossover to control the reflection off the floor, which can cut or boost an octave in the piano's central range. The Constellation MK2 series includes bookshelf models such as the Constellation Lynx MK2 and Constellation Delphinus MK2, while the Academy series is the top line.

About the brand

Vivid Audio is a British loudspeaker maker whose designs come from Laurence Dickie. Every model uses drivers, crossovers and enclosures that the company makes by hand. Each driver is backed by a tapered tube that absorbs the sound coming off its rear, and the bass drivers are arranged so their reaction forces cancel. The curved cabinet shapes keep resonance and reflection low. The Kaya models suit smaller rooms and home theaters, and the Giya series adds more drivers. The Moya M1 flagship is built around a stack of bass drivers for extended low frequencies.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Unlike the vast majority of our competitors, who simply use others' active components, we have, from inception, March 2001, designed and manufactured our very own bespoke, proprietary drive units. The resultant filter networks are ridiculously simple. By controlling the whole process, we are able to derive the exact response from each in it's system. A little appreciated advange too, is we are able to provide spare parts for an extended period.

Any vibrating device will impart that vibration to the substrate to which it is fixed. At Vivid Audio at no time do we couple drive units to the cabinet directly, each is decoupled by a carefully selected soft, 30 shore silicone, memory free O ring. In the case of bass units, we go one step futher - in addition to the decoupling O ring, each driver is apposed by another identical bass unit in a reaction cancelling configuration. Expensive, resulting in an inert cabinet. Note the lack of visible fixing harware.

A perfect acoustic solution.

(No matter how heavy you make a loudspeaker cabinet, all one is doing is shifting the damped resonances in band. Place your ear against any loudspeaker to appreciate this. The worst case example is the ubiquitous eccentricly loaded sub woofer.)

We strive for as lower mass as possible in an extremely stiff configuration. The lower the mass, the lower the energy strorage. The same requirement as aircraft, race cars etc. There are many other unique technologies we employ, jointly presenting the cleanest window into the music. Our web page details these.

It would be foolhardy of me to send you a short list - by definition would exclude many excellent brands of which we have no knowledge. Suffice to say: Unusually, we expend an exorbitant effort in perfecting the loudspeaker / room interface, no sharp perturbations, corners, discontinuities, etc., and the loudspeaker / amplifier interface, ensuring at the minimum impedance, the current and voltage waveforms are close to being in phase - an ideal situation. Our loudspeakers present an easy load to the amplifier. Quality rather than quantity is emphasized.

About the brand

Qln is a Swedish speaker maker, started in 1977 with an idea about how a loudspeaker should reproduce the soundstage. Its speakers are time aligned, often with a slanted baffle, and the cabinets are built from Qboard, a damped sandwich material that keeps resonance down. Qln develops its drive units with its suppliers, including coated Kevlar mid-woofers, and voices the speakers for living rooms. Reviewers describe the sound as natural and coherent. The compact two-way Prestige One suits smaller rooms. The Prestige Three and Prestige Five are floorstanders, and the Reference 9 is a three-way.
