What's unique about the brand

Bryston builds amplifiers for recording studios and broadcast facilities as well as homes, and backs its analog products with a 20-year warranty. The Canadian company, founded in 1973, runs every amplifier through 100 hours of continuous testing before it ships. Every wire is cut and bent by hand and every connection is hand soldered. Reviewers point to discrete Class A circuits and very low noise. The BDA-3.14 combines the BDA-3 DAC with a streamer in one box, and the BHA-1 is on our All Class A Amplifiers list.

Brand overview

Roger Kanno of SoundStage! Hi-Fi had to put his ear right next to a tweeter before he could hear any hiss from a Bryston 4B Cubed. Chris Russell, who designed the company's first amplifiers, told Stereophile the job is to make the signal bigger and "to change it in no other way." Most amplifiers hand the music back and forth between two kinds of output transistor that never quite match, which leaves a tiny flaw at the handoff. Bryston's answer, which it calls Quad Complementary, is to pair each transistor with its opposite so both halves behave alike and the handoff stays clean. Reviewers hear neutrality. Kanno called the 4B Cubed "by-the-book neutral," and Tom Martin of The Absolute Sound found the 3B Cubed's bass "in proportion to the mid-range and treble." Bryston suits listeners who want power in reserve and an amplifier that adds nothing of its own.

Start with the 4B Cubed. Doug Schneider of SoundStage! has long considered it the sweet spot of the line, and Jason Thorpe, a tube listener, bought one for his own system. The 3B Cubed is the smaller sibling, and the 28B monoblocks are the step up for the hardest loads. Jeff Dorgay of TONE drove Quad electrostats, vintage Acoustats and Magnepans with a pair of 28Bs, and he advises a dedicated 15 or 20 amp line for each after the two tripped a shared breaker. Several models have a gain switch, and Marc Rushton of StereoNET found the 14B Cubed a touch soft at the lower setting and settled on the higher one. Give the 14B Cubed air, since its whole aluminum case helps shed heat, and Rushton recommends an open rack over a closed cabinet. If a tube preamp feeds them, Dorgay says to switch the 28Bs off first. Every Bryston ships with the printout of its own 100-hour factory test.

Bryston began in 1962 as a maker of medical equipment, named for founders Bower, Rybb and Stoneborough. John Russell, a NASA engineer caught in the layoffs when the Apollo missions ended, bought the company, and his son Chris decided sound equipment was what interested him. In 1973 he carried a prototype amplifier in a utility box to the recording studio Eastern Sound. The studio ordered two, so the Pro 3 went into production and later became the 3B. Russell laid out the first 4B from a circuit he had never breadboarded or put on paper, and it worked the first time. It went into production in 1976, and in early 1978 The Audio Critic called it "the best power amplifier we've been able to find so far." Bryston says the 41st 4B ever built still drives the JBL main monitors at Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, Ontario and has run nearly nonstop since the late 1970s. The 20-year warranty began in 1990, and Bryston's Brian Russell told Doug Schneider why: "It's just easier for everyone."

Products overview

Bryston amplifiers share discrete Class A circuits and very low noise, so quiet passages stay clean. The 3B Cubed gives 200 watts per channel and its shallow depth suits a shallow rack. The 7B Cubed is a 600 watt monoblock that drives difficult speakers to lifelike levels. The 28B Cubed gives 1000 watts into 8 ohms, enough to control large speakers in a big room. For digital sources, the BDA-3 is a DAC and the BDA-3.14 adds a built-in streamer.

  • Start here. A headphone listener who does not need a built-in DAC should take the BHA-1, the entry point, with balanced and single-ended outputs for a wide range of headphones.
  • Sweet spot. The 4B Cubed suits a buyer with demanding floorstanders, giving 300 watts per channel from fully independent channel supplies, so each channel keeps its own power reserve, while the 7B Cubed and above add more power.
  • All in. The 28B Cubed is priced well above the 14B Cubed, and its 1000 watts into 8 ohms give big speakers firmer control and more headroom than the models below.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • Bryston offers an exceptional 20-year warranty (5-year for digital) on their products, demonstrating confidence in their long-term reliability and durability - a significant differentiator in the high-end audio market.
  • Bryston bridges the gap between pro audio and audiophile markets, with industrial-grade build quality and overload protection features stemming from their experience catering to professional recording studios and touring rigs.
  • They prioritize quality parts, discrete Class A circuits, and minimize both internally generated and externally sourced noise (RFI, EMI), resulting in exceptionally quiet and transparent audio reproduction.

Quotes we liked:

  • "I heard sound that was at once brawny and precise, yet very subtle and refined when the music required it. I've said similar things about various amplifiers in the past, but the Bryston was truly remarkable in how it sacrificed little, if any, power output while retaining an extremely sophisticated and nuanced sound that I hadn't thought possible for $5695 in 2017 dollars." (https://soundstagehifi.com/index.php/equipment-reviews/1073-bryston-4b3-stereo-mono-amplifier)
  • "The Bryston will never be confused with a tube amplifier, but texture and tone through the HD800? Hell hath frozen over. The Bryston BHA-1 blurs that line rather significantly offering up a cleaner sounding and more detailed presentation than any of the tube amplifiers in my collection, but with a warmer tonal balance than I would have expected." (https://audiophilepure.com/2024/01/08/bryston-bha-1-headphone-amplifier-review-2)
  • "The Bryston BDA-3 offers seemingly perfect linearity from low bass to upper treble which provides realistic body and presence to instruments and especially to vocal performances. Harmonic activity is fully present, in proper proportion (!), and can last a very long time before fading into silence." (https://10audio.com/bryston_bda-3)
  • "I maintain that the ebb is just as important as the flow, and the 28B Cubed amplifiers have a fantastic ability to fade back to zero just as quickly as they can accelerate to 100%. This ability to breathe, if you will, is what allows you to hear fingers slide across a guitar fretboard and feel the textural difference when you listen to Stanley Clarke (or whoever your favorite bass players are) go from acoustic bass to an electric." About the brand

LUXMAN still fits tone controls to its flagship amplifiers, using a circuit that goes back to the SQ-5A of 1961. The Japanese company started its business in 1925, the year radio broadcasting began in Japan, and builds amplifiers, tube models among them, alongside analog and digital players. Reviewers hear a musical, natural sound. The larger power amplifiers use LUXMAN's own circuits, ODNF in the M-700u and M-900u and LIFES in the M-10X. The M-200 can be bridged to mono for more power, and the L-590AXII is on our All Class A Amplifiers list.
