What's unique about the brand

Davis Acoustics pioneered the use of materials like Kevlar, carbon, and glass fiber in speaker unit production, and their focus remains on driver technology over box design as seen in their MV One model with its unique wideband driver. Their speakers use proprietary drivers with different cable types for each driver to optimize response, setting them apart from other French brands by delivering natural sound without the harshness often associated with high-frequency reproduction.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • Davis Acoustics leverages in-house driver design and manufacturing, a legacy dating back to 1986, to offer unique driver combinations like Kevlar mids and carbon fiber woofers, tailored for balanced sound.
  • They are known for meticulous attention to cabinet design, often employing features like reinforced MDF, internal bracing, rounded edges, and strategically placed vents to minimize unwanted resonances and optimize acoustic performance.
  • A key element of the Davis Acoustics sound signature is a focus on delivering a natural and detailed midrange, frequently utilizing Kevlar drivers to achieve richness, texture, and clarity in vocal and instrumental reproduction.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "Above all, however, what I imagined when looking at the speakers was confirmed - the combination of a compact enclosure with a three-way system, in which the woofer is completely different from the midrange driver, and is further aided by a clever ventilation port, resulted in a sound that is both deep and dynamic." (https://www.stereolifemagazine.com/reviews/item/1576-davis-acoustics-krypton-6)
  • "As we have already noted, the Courbet No 7 is a detailed and open speaker with an extraordinarily clean and airy sound, whereby the dedication to making a midrange speaker, which forms the backbone of many Davis models, has its complete justification. This means that the reproduction of piano, vocals, string instruments is fantastic and if there were only a little less coloration of the box in the result, we could declare the midrange area impeccable." (https://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1221/DavisAcousticsCourbetNo7Loudspeaker_Review.htm)
  • "If I had to sum up the sound of the French floorstanderss in one word, I would say it's sleek. In this one term, you can fit virtually everything that makes the sound of the Krypton 6 distinctive - the clarity of the bass, the consistency across the whole bandwidth, quickness, tangibility of the mid-high range, and even precise stereo imaging." (https://www.stereolifemagazine.com/reviews/item/1576-davis-acoustics-krypton-6)
  • "From the very first notes, the Courbet N°3 creates a real sense of pleasure for the listener, who is immediately captivated by the precision and performance that this speaker has to offer despite its size." (https://blog.son-video.com/en/2019/04/review-davis-acoustics-courbet-n3)

Lineup comparison

We think it's helpful to understand how their products compare. To learn more about each, scroll to the section above to click through to individual product pages.

Olympia One Master 35

  • Positioning: Entry-level floorstanding speaker reissued for accessible performance in smaller spaces.
  • Description: Offers a compact two-driver design with moderate power and simplified connectivity, making it a practical choice for smaller rooms and budget-oriented systems. Compared to the more robust Ariane 9 and other premium models, it provides basic functionality without advanced low-end impact, ideal for users with modest budget and space needs.

Ariane 9

  • Positioning: Mid-range floorstanding speaker aimed at larger listening rooms with balanced sound.
  • Description: Features a four-driver configuration that enhances bass descent and refines high frequencies with a new tweeter, delivering a wide and realistic sound scene. Compared to the entry-level Olympia One Master 35, it offers improved dynamics, yet remains less complex than the Krypton 10 and Stellar.

Courbet N°8

  • Positioning: Mid-to-high range three-way speaker designed for large rooms needing defined and musical sound reproduction.
  • Description: Integrates a fabric dome tweeter, a midrange taken from a higher model, and a fast carbon woofer to achieve an extended bandwidth and clarity. In contrast with the simpler Ariane 9 and Olympia One Master 35, its advanced design serves users with higher technical expectations while still being more approachable than the top-tier Krypton 10 and Stellar.

Krypton 10

  • Positioning: High-end speaker engineered for large living spaces with a focus on powerful and authoritative bass.
  • Description: Uses dual 21 cm bass drivers in parallel with a laminar port to deliver strong low-end performance while preserving detailed midrange and treble. Compared to the mid-range Ariane 9 and Courbet N°8, it targets users seeking enhanced bass and robust sound performance, though it sits just below the flagship level of the Stellar series.

Stellar

  • Positioning: Flagship floorstanding speaker crafted for the most demanding audio systems in expansive environments.
  • Description: Uses a refined three-driver setup with premium materials for membranes, motors, and cabling to ensure precise detail and an expansive soundstage. While it outclasses the advanced features of the Krypton 10 and is pricier than the Ariane 9, Courbet N°8, and Olympia One Master 35, it represents the pinnacle of the lineup's technological capabilities.

About the brand

Cabasse, a French hifi brand with roots dating back to 1742 in musical instrument making, is renowned for its unique coaxial speaker design where all sound waves emanate from a single point. Their flagship product, La Sphère, features a distinctive four-way coaxial drive unit array, while their patented HELD technology uses multiband dynamic signal processing to enhance bass dynamics without distortion.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

I think there are four pillars, but they’re all intertwined. The first is the 75 years of acoustics and R&D. We were one of the first companies to create the coaxial driver itself. Today, a lot of companies use coaxial or geo concentric designs, but we were one of the first in 1958 to develop it. You’ll find this in 90% of our lineup. The second is the connectivity aspect. More than 10 years ago, we were acquired by a company whose specialty was connectivity (UPNP, DLNA, and other connectivity protocols). The CEO saw Cabasse as an amazing brand, and he recognized that the audio market was shifting; similar to how Sonos pioneered multi-room wireless audio in the mid-market in the early 2000s. The same shift started happening in the high-end hi-fi industry, but very few companies had the expertise. So he purchased Cabasse, and now we have acoustics, coaxial driver design, high-excursion woofer technology, and robust connectivity; plus DSP and active filtering. These are things we’ve been doing for a while. And I’d also say the design makes us stand out.

What's your approach to customer support?

Now that we’re basically our own distributor in the U.S., we work directly with dealers. We offer warranties on drivers; ranging from 3 to 5 years, or lifetime depending on the product. We just launched a new product in Munich, and it comes with a lifetime driver warranty. If a customer buys a product and a driver fails, the dealer comes to us and says, “Hey, can you help my client?” Then we either get in touch with the customer directly, if the dealer agrees, or the dealer takes care of it. Not every dealer has the ability to repair, especially since many of our products are heavily electronics-based. In some cases, we’ll just replace the entire unit. We also have a policy where, within a certain period, if the electronics fail, we’ll replace the unit for free. Generally, it’s 3 to 5 years for drivers, and 2 years for electronics.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

We actually have a playlist on Qobuz with all of our demo tracks. Off the top of my head, for precision and showcasing microdetails, I really like the track called “Soft Landing” by Hadouk Trio. It’s a very clean and amazingly recorded track. I also like “Magnetic Lies” by Malia to show the low end and precision. and fact that our woofer technology provides a lot of dispersion without distortion. The coil never leaves the magnetic field, so you get a lot of excursion. Plus, our DSP helps a lot. We want people to experience that at a given price and speaker size; they have a lot to play with.
