What's unique about the brand

Benchmark is an American maker of DACs, amplifiers and preamplifiers, started by Allen H. Burdick to supply television broadcast facilities. Its electronics are built and tested in Syracuse, New York, and certified for professional and home use. The company's goal is to keep noise and distortion below the threshold of hearing. The AHB2 power amplifier, which carries Burdick's initials, uses a patented THX AAA feed-forward design. The DAC3 B suits systems that already have a preamplifier, the DAC3 L adds remote control and home theater bypass, and the DAC3 HGC builds in a headphone amplifier.

Brand overview

In November 2011, Benchmark's chief engineer, John Siau, had lunch at an audio engineering conference with two friends from THX, and by the end of it they had written the specifications for a new power amplifier on a napkin. That amplifier became the AHB2. Siau points out that ordinary feedback fixes an error only after it happens. The AHB2 pairs a big amplifier that supplies the power with a small one that compares the output with the input and cancels the difference as it happens. That matters most at the fraction of a watt that carries most music, and Siau's double-blind tests found that small errors at those levels were clearly audible to most listeners. Audio Science Review's founder ranked the AHB2 the best amplifier he had measured. Benchmark tells buyers who want "a warm veil of even-harmonic distortion" that they have come to the wrong place. Its gear suits listeners who want the recording unchanged, and Erich Wetzel of SoundStage! Hi-Fi heard "nothing more, nothing less" than the recording through the LA4 preamp.

Most Benchmark systems are built around a DAC3 converter. The B is the plain version, the L adds analog inputs and a volume control, and the HGC adds a headphone amplifier. What Hi-Fi? called the HGC "the one to go for" for anyone who needs analog inputs. Pair it with the AHB2. It takes balanced XLR inputs only, but on its high gain setting a simple RCA-to-XLR adapter works. It makes 100 watts into 8 ohms, and bridged as a mono amp it makes far more, for speakers of 6 ohms or more. Check the DAC3's output level, which is set with internal jumpers. Carlo Lo Raso of Secrets used the full studio level into an all-Benchmark stack, and ConvinceMeAudio advises turning it down for other amplifiers. If you listen quietly, add the LA4 preamp. HiFi Turtle found its advantage over the DAC's own volume control at low listening levels, and his wife noticed the change without being told.

Benchmark began in 1983 as the Benchmark Sound Company, in a garage in Garland, Texas, where Allen H. Burdick built audio equipment for television broadcast facilities. It moved to Burdick's hometown of Syracuse, New York, where its products are still designed, assembled and tested. Its DA101 was a distribution amplifier built to feed 10 balanced lines at once, and the company used DA101s to drive its listening-room speakers for years because it couldn't buy a better amplifier. Siau joined in 1997 after 15 years designing video systems for CBS. Home listeners found Benchmark through the DAC1, which Alan Sircom of Hi-Fi+ calls one of the first products that took USB audio seriously. Stereophile's John Marks introduced it in 2003, and it stayed in the magazine's Class A recommendations for well over a decade. The THX amplifier still had no name in September 2013, when its faceplates were ready to print. Siau noticed that its class A performance, class H rails and class AB output stage spelled out A, H and B, Burdick's initials, and the project called PA2 became the AHB2.

Products overview

Every Benchmark model aims to keep noise and distortion below the threshold of hearing, so the electronics add nothing you can hear to the music. The DAC3 B is the entry point, with fixed outputs for a system that already has a preamplifier. The LA4 adds relay-controlled volume and four analog inputs, so one box switches sources and sets level. The AHB2 is a power amplifier, and its bridged mono mode raises 100 W per channel to 380 W, which drives large rooms harder.

  • Start here. Choose the DAC3 B if you have a preamplifier and want clean digital playback from USB, optical or coaxial sources at the lowest price in the range.
  • Sweet spot. The LA4 suits a listener who wants volume and input switching in one fully balanced unit, with a wide 0.1 Hz to 500 kHz response and fine 0.5 dB steps for precise level matching.
  • All in. The HPA4 is an extension of the LA4 one price bracket higher, adding the THX-888 headphone amplifier, which drives low impedance headphones without a rise in distortion, so quiet passages stay clean.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • Benchmark's products are rooted in professional electronics, emphasizing ultra-low distortion and noise for clean sound. While engineering-oriented, they also value listening tests in product development.
  • The brand often incorporates THX Achromatic Audio Amplifier (AAA) technology, which utilizes a patented feed-forward design to drastically reduce harmonic, intermodulation, and crossover distortion, contributing to sonic transparency.
  • Benchmark implements highly precise volume controls, often using relay-based systems with numerous small steps (e.g., 256 steps in 0.5dB increments) to minimize noise and allow for accurate level adjustments.
  • They meticulously focus on optimizing the signal path and rejecting interference; for instance, they prefer balanced connections and employ shielding techniques to maintain signal integrity.

Quotes we liked:

  • "One thing that continually impressed me about the DAC3 HGC is the extremely high level of resolution that this DAC is able to achieve. It is a detail monster and renders even the smallest nuances within a recording that will leave you speechless." (https://headphone.guru/the-benchmark-dac3-hgc-a-new-standard-in-transparency-and-resolution)
  • "The overall transparency, speed, clarity and overall neutrality is something I think we should all pursue when wanting to reproduce music just as the artist intended us to hear. It was stellar with every headphone that I threw at it and I couldn't find a sonic weakness anywhere." (https://headphone.guru/the-benchmark-hpa4-headphone-amplifier-the-leader-in-transparency)
  • "The HPA4 amplifier offered an incredibly close look into this recording with the ability to mine out the smallest details that other amplifiers would seem to gloss over. Detail extraction was off the charts as was its ability to cast an expansive sound stage and truly one of the best I've heard the HD800S headphones portray!" (https://headphone.guru/the-benchmark-hpa4-headphone-amplifier-the-leader-in-transparency)
  • "Treble is extended, airy, and resolute. Once again, I'm hard pressed to think of an amplifier for less than twice as much as the AHB2 that can even begin to compare, let alone match, this amps performance with the spectrum above 2.5 kHz." (https://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1214/BenchmarkMediaAHB2StereoPowerAmplifierReview.htm)
  • "Bass is rendered with exceptional detail and speed, and brother can it go deep! In fact, I can't think of another amplifier (or pair of monos) I've experienced for under about $6000 that can do what the AHB2 can do with the bandwidth below 100 Hz." (https://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1214/BenchmarkMediaAHB2StereoPowerAmplifierReview.htm)
  • "The Benchmark's transparency was remarkable. I heard only what was present in the recording -- nothing more, nothing less." (https://www.soundstagehifi.com/index.php/equipment-reviews/1352-benchmark-media-systems-la4-preamplifier)

About the brand

Feliks Audio is a Polish maker of tube headphone amplifiers, hand-built at its own site in Lubliniec. Most of the range is output-transformerless, so the tubes drive the headphones directly, and the circuits are wired point to point with single-crystal copper. Unusually for tube amplifiers, they drive planar magnetic headphones as well as high-impedance dynamic ones while keeping the noise floor low. Owners can swap both power and driver tubes to change the sound, and the range runs from the compact Echo 2 to the 300B-based Envy flagship.

About the brand

Flux Lab Acoustics is a Ukrainian company that designs and builds Class-A headphone amplifiers in Ukraine. Some of its amplifiers use MOSFET circuits and others are dual mono, with each channel kept separate. The fully balanced stacks pair two amplifier units and offer an optional adapter for headphones with a 4-pin XLR plug. The team's experience covers both circuit board and software design, and the company develops each product through lab measurements followed by careful listening. Because the amplifiers can take software updates, owners can get later improvements without replacing the unit.
