What's unique about the brand

Engström is a Swedish hifi brand that handcrafts amplifiers with a minimalist Nordic design, featuring fully balanced, transformer-coupled circuits and no negative feedback to preserve natural sound dynamics. Their amplifiers, which use KR Audio's T-100 power tubes, are known for creating an expansive, three-dimensional soundstage with what audiophiles call a "Scandinavian Sound"—characterized by open, detailed, and natural sonic qualities.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • Engström's design philosophy centers on minimizing "disturbance" to the audio signal, prioritizing the preservation of the music's inherent structure and pattern over sheer power or technical specifications.
  • They draw inspiration from Scandinavian design traditions, creating visually minimalist and elegant products with carefully considered aesthetics.
  • The brand places a strong emphasis on achieving a "Scandinavian sound," characterized by naturalness, clarity, and musical articulation.
  • Engström amps are known for their ability to work with a wider range of loudspeakers than typical low-powered tube amplifiers, offering versatility in system matching.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "The ARNE creates the feeling of being at a live performance, thanks to its expansive and incredibly natural sound. This sensation stayed with me throughout the test." (https://avreviews.co.il/international/engstrom-arne-review-eng)
  • "One area in which the ARNE really excels is vocal articulation and communication with the natural tonality and diction of familiar voices, whether singing or speaking being quite remarkable. So much so in fact that I decided to hook up the pairing to the TV, just to appreciate its impact on dramatic delivery." (https://hifiplus.com/articles/engstrom-arne-integrated-amplifier)

MONICA

  • Positioning: An entry-level line-stage offering flexible preamplification and phono capabilities.
  • Description: Features a unique two-totem-pole design in a balanced configuration that separates pure signal processing from noise. Compared to Arne's integrated power and the dedicated power amps in Lars and Eric, it is ideal for users with smaller spaces and modest budgets who need essential functionality with versatile connectivity.

ARNE

  • Positioning: A fully balanced integrated tube amplifier delivering 30W of power in a classic design.
  • Description: Uses DC coupling between its driver and power tubes along with a symmetrical power supply to achieve fast transient response and low distortion. Compared to Monica's basic pre-stage approach and the specialized power amplifiers in Lars and Eric, it is well suited for moderate-sized rooms and mid-range budgets that favor a mix of vintage tube charm with modern engineering.

LARS

  • Positioning: A dedicated, fully balanced Class A power amplifier featuring refined construction and a distinctive glass mantle.
  • Description: Stands out with its glass outer mantle that creates a chimney effect for constant tube temperature and clear, pure sound. Compared to Arne's integrated design and Eric's high-power solution, Lars offers a traditional yet high-quality option for users with medium to larger rooms.

ERIC

  • Positioning: A high-end, fully balanced transformer-coupled power amplifier delivering 70W per monoblock.
  • Description: Features an advanced evolution to 845 power tubes paired with transformer coupling, which drives even the toughest loads with deep, expansive sound. Compared to Monica's basic preamplification, Arne's integrated approach, and Lars' classic performance, Eric is designed for larger spaces.

About the brand

VinylSavor stands out for its unique use of transformer coupling and transformer volume control in preamps, along with vacuum tube rectified high voltage supplies and low impedance circuits. The brand's equipment, personally built and tested by Thomas Mayer, is engineered with custom-made transformers and multiple chokes for excellent power supply performance, eliminating the need for expensive power conditioners or exotic cables.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Fully transformer coupled designs. The use of directly heated triodes not only as output tube but also as drive rand preamp tube. 600 Ohm LCR RIAA EQ in phono stages. Custom triodes for the Intrepid series (Thomas Mayer ONE, TWO and THREE). Possibility to customise each product to specific needs.

What's your approach to customer support?

I sell directly to end customers. I used to have very few resellers but due to the steep increase of production and material costs I exclusive do direct sales now to avoid price increases of the products which would otherwise be necessary. My goal is that every customer is happy and I am always available for any questions even years after the sale. When necessary I do repairs or assist in set up at the customer site.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

I don’t have any favourite tracks, but use whatever I am in the mood for. Equipment should not be designed to work with specific music. People should use music they like for testing

What other products pair best with yours?

Admire Audio speakers.
