What's unique about the brand

Devialet is a French audio company, founded in Paris in 2007 around the Analog Digital Hybrid amplifier, which combines analog and digital amplification in one circuit for very low distortion from a small box. ADH is the heart of the Phantom, a rounded wireless speaker with side-firing bass drivers that reach down to 14 Hz. The Expert Pro integrated amplifiers pair ADH with SAM, which matches the amplifier's output to the speaker it drives, for people who already have speakers.

Brand overview

Jim Austin of Stereophile once played a deep bass test tone through a Devialet Expert 140 Pro and switched on a feature called SAM. Windows rattled at the far end of his room, about 40 feet from the speakers, something he had never experienced there before. SAM, for Speaker Active Matching, is software. Devialet measures a speaker's woofers in its lab and adds the speaker to its database, and SAM then reshapes the bass signal in real time so that, Devialet says, the sound follows the recording exactly. The amplifier underneath is just as unusual. A small, very clean amplifier sets the shape of the signal, while efficient helper stages beside it supply the current the speaker draws, which is how the whole thing fits in such a slim case. Austin heard the Expert 140 Pro as "honest, evenhanded, liquid, open," and What Hi-Fi? called its presentation "impressively crisp." Devialet suits listeners who want clean, precise sound from very little furniture.

If you already own speakers, start with an Expert Pro amplifier. The number in each model name is its power per channel into 6 ohms, and the 140 drove Austin's Revel Salon2s "with apparent ease." Setup is done through Devialet's online Configurator, which saves your choices to an SD card for the back panel. That is where you pick your speaker model for SAM or turn the RCA inputs into a phono stage, and Austin notes that a dealer can do it for you. If you would rather have a complete system with no separate boxes, look at the Phantoms, which are wireless speakers. The decibel figure in each name is the maximum volume at one meter. The Phantom II uses one full-range driver, and the larger Phantom I adds a tweeter. Whichever you choose, give the side-firing woofers room. Paul Sechi of StereoNET kept his Phantom Ultimate 108dBs well clear of the side walls and the wall behind, and he never passed half volume in his room.

The name honors Guillaume Vialet, an 18th-century engineer who worked alongside the Enlightenment philosophers and contributed to their Encyclopédie. Pierre-Emmanuel Calmel came up with the hybrid amplifier idea in 2004, built a prototype in 2007, and founded Devialet in Paris that year with Quentin Sannié, Emmanuel Nardin and Mathias Moronvalle. Their first product, the D-Premier of 2010, could hang on a wall, and it added a DAC to the usual phono stage, preamp and power amp. John Atkinson's Stereophile review of it was, in Austin's words, "a rave." Arnis Balgalvis of Positive Feedback found a D-Premier in Canada before Devialet had American distribution and used it as his reference for ten years, and Devialet has since rebuilt original D-Premiers in Paris as Expert 250 Pros. The Phantom followed in 2014. Its two opposed woofers face out from the sides of a sealed enclosure, and on a deep bass note, Alan Sircom of Hi-Fi+ writes, the sides "expand and contract like a beating heart." Devialet credits the pulsating-sphere idea to the loudspeaker pioneer Harry Olson.

Products overview

Devialet builds around ADH, which blends analog and digital amplification for very low distortion from a small box. Mania is the portable entry with a 30 Hz floor for a desk. Phantom II 98 dB reaches 18 Hz for a living room. Phantom I 108 dB reaches 14 Hz and 1100 watts for big rooms. Amplifiers rise from Expert 140 Pro to Astra Dual, which drives harder speakers.

  • Start here. Mania suits a first buyer who wants portable high fidelity sound for a desk or small room on a modest budget.
  • Sweet spot. Phantom II 98 dB gives a living room 18 Hz bass and 400 watts from one small speaker, and Phantom I 108 dB mostly adds deeper bass and more volume.
  • All in. Astra Dual is an extension of Astra that doubles it to 2x600 watts under 4Ω, so it keeps control of demanding speakers at higher volume for a buyer with a large room.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • Devialet products stand out with their uniquely futuristic, often spherical designs, setting them apart from conventional speakers.
  • The brand incorporates proprietary technologies like ADH amplification, SAM speaker matching, and HBI bass implosion, which contribute to exceptional sound quality and robust bass response.
  • The brand integrates seamlessly with modern streaming ecosystems, offering compatibility with Apple AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, and has recently updated its products to incorporate Roon Ready status.

Quotes we liked:

  • "And there's lots of impressive bass; my go-to Anders Trentemøller track ['Chameleon' from his The Last Resort album on Poker Flat records] showed just how deep the Phantom I can go; bass in all its teeth-rattling, brain-liquifying, scary window-shaking glory. This is always an impressive track, but here the depth of bass was almost atavistic and visceral." (https://hifiplus.com/articles/devialet-phantom-i-108db-wireless-active-loudspeaker-system)
  • "The sound of one speaker in mono is impressive; the sound of two is just spectacular. They are absurdly loud but totally controlled, and stay free of distortion almost all the way up to full blast." (https://www.stuff.tv/review/devialet-phantom-1-108db-review)
  • "The bass is phenomenal but there's real fidelity to the whole stereo image: adopt the perfect dead-centre listening position and you can almost see it in front of you like a tennis net stretched between the speakers, with instruments and voices perched along the tape like individual sonic pigeons." (https://www.stuff.tv/review/devialet-phantom-1-108db-review)
  • "I was going to start with the thundering, abysmal bass. But instead I want to focus on the overall sound quality. It is exceptionally good. The sound is experienced as very linear, with great transparency and a resolution that is few and far between." (https://www.lbtechreviews.com/test/speakers/devialet-phantom-i-103-db)

About the brand

Sonos is an American maker of wireless speakers, soundbars and headphones, started in 2002. Its four founding engineers in Santa Barbara, California, set out to make it easy to play any song in any room, and its speakers still join one multiroom system over WiFi. Trueplay tunes each speaker to its room, and Oscar and Grammy-winning producers and mixers fine-tune the sound. Owners can start with one Era 100 and add rooms over time, and the Beam soundbar can grow into a wireless surround system with a Sub Mini and rear speakers.
