What's unique about the brand

Constellation Audio is an American maker of amplifiers and preamplifiers, founded by people with decades of experience as manufacturers and dealers. Its circuits use two in-house designs, the Line Stage Gain Module and the Balanced Bridged amplifier, meant to keep the signal path simple. The Performance 2 models use switch-mode power supplies, and the phono stage keeps its supply in a separate chassis. Each unit is hand-built and burned in before shipping. The Inspiration series includes an integrated amplifier for a one-box system, and the Performance 2 monoblock delivers 1,200 watts into 8 ohms.

Brand overview

Larry Greenhill had just warmed up Constellation's least expensive power amplifier, the Inspiration Stereo 1.0, when a choral recording stopped him. "It was a Wow! moment," he wrote in Stereophile, with the choir standing out against a black background "with bell-like clarity." Most amplifiers split each sound wave in two, sending the top half through one kind of transistor and the bottom half through another, and Constellation argues that because the two kinds never behave quite alike, the halves never match perfectly. Its Balanced Bridge design uses a single kind throughout, with two matched amplifiers in each channel and the speaker connected between them. Alan Sircom of Hi-Fi+ hears in the Inspiration amps the "grace, clarity, and open mid-band of a small single-ended tube amp" with serious solid-state power behind it. Constellation suits listeners who love what tubes do for voices but own speakers that need a big amplifier.

Start with the Inspiration series. Aron Garrecht of SoundStage! Ultra found that the Inspiration Stereo 1.0 shares most of its circuitry and parts with models costing four to nine times as much. Above it come the Revelation, Performance and Reference series, with Statement at the top. For the step up, Michael Fremer called the Performance Centaur Mono "the sweet spot of the Constellation line, in terms of quality per dollar," while Irv Gross of Constellation gives that title to the Revelation series' Taurus amps. If you pair a Constellation amp with a Constellation preamp, try the Direct XLR input, which skips the amp's own gain stage. Garrecht heard a darker noise floor that way, and Mark Craven of Hi-Fi News liked the Revelation 2 best through its regular balanced input, so try both. Jason Kennedy of The Ear describes the Integrated 1.0 as strictly neutral and got fabulous results with warmer Q Acoustics Concept 500 floorstanders. The big amps handle hard loads, and John Atkinson heard the Centaur II 500 cope easily with Wilson Alexia speakers.

Constellation began in 2008 with David Payes and Murali Murugasu, the Australians behind Continuum Audio Labs and its Caliburn turntable, and Peter Madnick gathered what Michael Fremer called a "dream team" of amplifier designers, among them John Curl, Bascom King and Demian Martin. Alex Rasmussen, third-generation president of the Neal Feay Company, designed the machined aluminum cases. The company arrived at CES in 2010 with amps, preamps, DACs and phono stages in two lines at once. Its earlier flagship, the Reference Hercules monoblock, served Robert Harley of The Absolute Sound as his reference for many years. A new generation of Constellation amplifiers now uses the company's own switch-mode power supplies, which co-founder Murugasu calls "the single biggest change to our architecture and sound." The Statement monoblock at the top of the range makes 1,700 watts into 8 ohms, and Harley calls it the best-sounding solid-state amplifier he has heard.

Products overview

Every model uses Balanced Bridged modules and a switch-mode supply more than 20 dB quieter than a linear one, so quiet passages stay quiet. The Inspiration 2 Stereo Amplifier gives 240 watts into 8 ohms, enough for ordinary speakers in average rooms. The Revelation 2 Stereo Amplifier gives 600 watts into 4 ohms, so harder speaker loads stay under control. The Statement Stereo gives 1600 watts into 4 ohms, enough for large speakers in big rooms. Preamplifiers and phono stages come in Inspiration 2 and Revelation 2 versions.

  • Start here. Anyone building a small one-box system should take the Inspiration 2 Integrated Amplifier, which needs no separate preamp and adds a headphone output for private listening.
  • Sweet spot. The Inspiration 2 Stereo Amplifier suits a buyer who wants separate amplification, with 420 watts into 4 ohms so demanding speakers get more control than the integrated allows.
  • All in. The Statement Mono is a separate top series, priced well above the Revelation 2 line, and its 1,700 watts into 8 ohms lets big speakers play loud with control.

About the brand

Boulder Amplifiers is an American maker of high-end amplifiers and electronics based near Boulder, Colorado. The company began in professional recording and broadcast, and its early 500 power amplifier went to studios, loudspeaker makers and broadcasters. Its house sound is neutral, letting the character of each recording through. Boulder machines every chassis and its distinctive aluminum heatsinks in its own shop and builds its own circuit boards. The compact 861 suits smaller rooms and efficient speakers, and above it are the 1100 and 2100 series and the 3050 and 3010.

About the brand

Audio Phonique is a Polish maker of tube and solid-state electronics and cables, founded in 2018. It keeps its circuits as simple as possible and hand-builds everything at its own factory in Poland. The Statement Line uses directly heated triode tubes, with Emission Labs 1605 tubes running in parallel in the PSE1605 monoblocks. The solid-state Classic Line is voiced to keep some tube character, and its P1 line stage is built to work with a wide range of power amplifiers. The cables use monocrystalline silver and copper conductors in a design called Extended Air Geometry.

About the brand

Burmester is a German high-end audio maker that has hand-built its products in Berlin since 1977. Its components carry a chrome industrial look and a high degree of adjustability, with settings such as gain and loading that let an owner fit a unit to the rest of the system. Reviewers describe the house sound as refined, with powerful, controlled bass and a large-scale soundstage. The BX100 speaker uses an Air-Motion-Transformer tweeter, and the BC350 offers Pure and Live tuning modes. The 175 turntable is on our Most Expensive Turntables list.

About the brand

Thrax is a Bulgarian maker of amplifiers and preamplifiers, founded by Rumen Artarski. A small team designs and builds everything in its Sofia workshop, winding every transformer in-house and machining every chassis from solid aluminum. Many of the designs combine tube and solid-state stages. The Dionysos preamplifier sets volume with transformers rather than potentiometers, and the Spartacus 300 monoblocks use directly heated triodes in push-pull, in pure class A with no feedback. The Enyo MK2 puts a preamplifier, DAC and power amplifier in one chassis, so a complete system needs fewer boxes.

About the brand

ACCUSTIC ARTS is a German maker of amplifiers and other hifi components that builds its components by hand. Its products go through a two-week testing process, and the company uses thick aluminum plates and gold-plated contacts. The company's tube hybrid preamplifiers pair transistor circuits with a tube buffer stage, aimed at a natural midrange. Listeners who want some tube character in an otherwise solid-state system can start with one of those preamplifiers, and its models include the Power II, Power III and Player III.

About the brand

Gryphon is a Danish high-end audio maker founded in 1985 by Flemming E. Rasmussen. Rasmussen trained as a painter, which shows in the finish of every product. Its amplifiers are heavily biased toward Class A, and most use zero negative feedback. Gryphon says it introduced the first true dual mono configuration, and it leaves out tone and balance controls. Every unit is built in Denmark and gets a 48-hour burn-in before a final listening test. The Diablo 333 integrated takes optional phono and DAC modules, so owners can add a turntable or digital sources later.
