What's unique about the brand

Brodmann is an Austrian loudspeaker maker in Vienna, and its sound philosophy draws on the Viennese sound tradition. Its home speakers come in the Vienna Classic and Festival series, and the company also builds car audio systems. The in-wall home theater speakers are designed so listeners hear the sound in the room without knowing where it comes from.

Products overview

Every Brodmann speaker uses a horn resonator, an undamped cabinet and an acoustic active crossover, so the models share one design and differ mainly in size and power. The F2 in the Festival series reaches 36 Hz, bass that suits a modest room. The VC 7 in the Vienna Classic series reaches 25 Hz and takes 180 watts, so bass goes deeper in a larger room. The JB 205 reaches 20 Hz and takes 480 watts for louder playing. Brodmann also builds car audio and in-wall home theater speakers.

  • Start here. Choose the F2 if you are building a first Brodmann system, because it is the cheapest model and its cabinet is only 216 mm wide.
  • Sweet spot. The VC 7 suits a listener with a larger room who wants bass down to 25 Hz and 180 watts of handling, a clear step beyond the F2 at 36 Hz.
  • All in. The JB 205 is a separate top tier priced far above the VC 7, and its 20 Hz reach and 480 watts give deeper bass and louder playing for a listener who wants the most headroom.

About the brand

Chario is an Italian loudspeaker maker, founded in Milan in 1975, that designs and builds its own drivers and cabinets in Italy. Many cabinets use solid Italian walnut, often aged for long periods. Reversed vertical driver arrays and down-firing woofers work with the crossover to control the reflection off the floor, which can cut or boost an octave in the piano's central range. The Constellation MK2 series includes bookshelf models such as the Constellation Lynx MK2 and Constellation Delphinus MK2, while the Academy series is the top line.

About the brand

Vivid Audio is a British loudspeaker maker whose designs come from Laurence Dickie. Every model uses drivers, crossovers and enclosures that the company makes by hand. Each driver is backed by a tapered tube that absorbs the sound coming off its rear, and the bass drivers are arranged so their reaction forces cancel. The curved cabinet shapes keep resonance and reflection low. The Kaya models suit smaller rooms and home theaters, and the Giya series adds more drivers. The Moya M1 flagship is built around a stack of bass drivers for extended low frequencies.

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Unlike the vast majority of our competitors, who simply use others' active components, we have, from inception, March 2001, designed and manufactured our very own bespoke, proprietary drive units. The resultant filter networks are ridiculously simple. By controlling the whole process, we are able to derive the exact response from each in it's system. A little appreciated advange too, is we are able to provide spare parts for an extended period.

Any vibrating device will impart that vibration to the substrate to which it is fixed. At Vivid Audio at no time do we couple drive units to the cabinet directly, each is decoupled by a carefully selected soft, 30 shore silicone, memory free O ring. In the case of bass units, we go one step futher - in addition to the decoupling O ring, each driver is apposed by another identical bass unit in a reaction cancelling configuration. Expensive, resulting in an inert cabinet. Note the lack of visible fixing harware.

A perfect acoustic solution.

(No matter how heavy you make a loudspeaker cabinet, all one is doing is shifting the damped resonances in band. Place your ear against any loudspeaker to appreciate this. The worst case example is the ubiquitous eccentricly loaded sub woofer.)

We strive for as lower mass as possible in an extremely stiff configuration. The lower the mass, the lower the energy strorage. The same requirement as aircraft, race cars etc. There are many other unique technologies we employ, jointly presenting the cleanest window into the music. Our web page details these.

It would be foolhardy of me to send you a short list - by definition would exclude many excellent brands of which we have no knowledge. Suffice to say: Unusually, we expend an exorbitant effort in perfecting the loudspeaker / room interface, no sharp perturbations, corners, discontinuities, etc., and the loudspeaker / amplifier interface, ensuring at the minimum impedance, the current and voltage waveforms are close to being in phase - an ideal situation. Our loudspeakers present an easy load to the amplifier. Quality rather than quantity is emphasized.

About the brand

Qln is a Swedish speaker maker, started in 1977 with an idea about how a loudspeaker should reproduce the soundstage. Its speakers are time aligned, often with a slanted baffle, and the cabinets are built from Qboard, a damped sandwich material that keeps resonance down. Qln develops its drive units with its suppliers, including coated Kevlar mid-woofers, and voices the speakers for living rooms. Reviewers describe the sound as natural and coherent. The compact two-way Prestige One suits smaller rooms. The Prestige Three and Prestige Five are floorstanders, and the Reference 9 is a three-way.

About the brand

Gershman Acoustics is a Canadian speaker maker, established in 1993 by Eli Gershman. Every speaker is handcrafted in Canada. The company's patented Bass Trap design controls the driver's back wave to extend bass and reduce resonance, and its upper models add the Separate Sub Alignment System to isolate the bass from the midrange and treble. The Studio II gives its tweeter a dual chamber, suits small and medium rooms and is on our Best Studio Monitors for Listening to Music list.

The current loudspeakers include the Magus, the Jazzon v2 and the Lotus 10.
