What's unique about the brand

Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems is an American amplifier company, founded in 2011. Dan D'Agostino had started Krell in 1980, and his team now hand-builds every product in Cave Creek, Arizona. The amplifiers are known for lacquered copper heatsinks with venturi tunnels and Breguet-style dials, and Dan D'Agostino wants solid-state sound as ear-friendly as the best tube amplifiers. Progression is the more accessible series, with Momentum above it and Relentless at the top. The Progression Integrated takes an optional streaming module and phono stage, so streaming and a turntable need no extra boxes.

Brand overview

Dan D'Agostino judges an amplifier by what he can hear behind the singer. On an old Billie Holiday recording he listens past her voice to the band, and he told Jason Victor Serinus of Stereophile that with his Relentless amplifier he could hear the musicians breathing. "That's the stuff that can give you goosebumps," he said. Alan Sircom of Hi-Fi+ writes that Dan considers "abundant" power necessary for realistic sound. His amps double their output each time the speaker's load halves, so they keep up with speakers that are hard to drive. They look the part, too, with copper heatsinks whose holes Michael Fremer compares to a carburetor venturi, drawing cool air in from below. Ken Kessler of Hi-Fi News finds the M400 MxV as "ear-friendly" as the best tube amps. The brand suits owners of large, demanding speakers who want music to stay easy at any volume.

Kessler sorts the three lines the way a supercar maker would. Relentless is the limited-edition flagship, Momentum the grand tourer, and Progression the luxury SUV, the most practical to own. Progression is the place to start. Sircom found the Progression pre and power amps so close to Momentum that "their biggest rivals are their little brothers," and he thinks Progression is more than enough for most people. The step up is Momentum. Dan told Serinus that if he could own only one of his amplifiers it would probably be the Momentum, which in his words gives the most of his sound for the least money. Match the amp to the speaker. Kessler judged the S350 overkill for high-sensitivity DeVore O/93s, while his Wilson Sasha DAWs took to it "like gin to tonic." Plug it straight into the wall, as Dan advises. Serinus usually uses a battery regenerator but preferred the M400 MxV without one. Get help with delivery, since a Progression S350 weighs 115 pounds and has no handles.

Dan D'Agostino studied electrical engineering at UC Berkeley and served with the U.S. Navy's Underwater Demolition Team, and in 1980 he co-founded Krell. Sircom recalls that the Krells everyone wanted in the 1980s were the KSA-50, a pure class A design, and the more powerful KSA-250. Dan and Petra D'Agostino started the new company in 2011, and its first product was the Momentum monoblock. Fremer found it remarkably compact for its power, with thick copper side panels on a chassis machined from one aluminum billet. Dan collects watches and loves wine and cars, and Fremer saw all three in the design. He first heard Momentums at a CES, driving Wilson Sashas, and described the sound as "ultra-transparent and velvety rich." The Momentum's success led to Progression below it and Relentless above. Every unit is built by hand in Cave Creek, Arizona. Kessler has used Dan's designs for nearly four decades and keeps a Momentum Stereo as his solid-state reference.

Products overview

Every model is hand-built in Cave Creek, Arizona, aiming for solid-state sound as easy on the ears as good tube amplifiers. The Progression Integrated gives 200 watts and takes an optional streaming module and phono stage, so streaming and a turntable need no extra boxes. The Momentum S250 MxV adds copper venturi heatsinks and 250 watts, which gives speakers more headroom in loud passages. The Relentless Epic 1600 delivers 1,500 watts into 8 ohms and 3,000 into 4, so it can drive very hard speakers.

  • Start here. A first buyer with one pair of speakers and a small rack wants the Progression Integrated, since one chassis replaces a separate preamplifier and power amplifier.
  • Sweet spot. The Momentum S250 MxV gives an owner with demanding speakers the circuitry of the M400 MxV monoblock in a compact stereo chassis at a much lower price.
  • All in. The Relentless Epic 1600 is priced far above the Momentum models, and its 5.5 kilowatt supply keeps full power as composed as 1 watt, so the largest speakers stay under control.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • The lacquered copper heatsinks with venturi tunnels and Breguet-style dials are distinctive visual elements that have been a consistent feature of D'Agostino's amplifiers from the beginning.
  • Dan D'Agostino designs his solid-state creations to be as accessible and 'ear-friendly' as the best valve amps, achieving a sound that is organic, natural, pleasant, and even friendly.
  • D'Agostino amplifiers are meticulously hand-built, with painstaking attention to detail and precision in component placement.

Quotes we liked:

  • "The frequency extremes the Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems S350 reproduced were extraordinary; never before have I heard a treble sound so extended yet so natural sounding. I've had experience with tube amps that had a seductive treble, one that sounded as if it possessed the gestalt of the real thing." (https://www.enjoythemusic.com/superioraudio/equipment/0423/DanDAgostinoProgressionS350Amplifier_Review.htm)
  • "The sound stage was tremendous; the unveiling of detail and associated dynamics will ignite and bring out the best in your loudspeakers. Instead of a symphony of audiophile words, I will summarize it as everything, and I mean everything got better." (https://pt.audio/2022/11/11/dan-dagostino-momentum-s250-mxv-amplifier-review)
  • "Expect detail at a level that, frankly, I have never heard in 20 plus years of reviewing some of the world's finest audiophile electronics. In terms of fit and finish, the D'Agostino Progression Preamp is simply in a class of its own." (https://hometheaterreview.com/dagostino-progression-preamplifier-reviewed)
  • "Mids were absolutely glorious with a liquidity and fleshed out presence that achieved something close to the real thing. Highs were extended with plenty of jump factor and lifelike attack." (https://positive-feedback.com/reviews/hardware-reviews/dagostino-master-audio-systems-progression-integrated-amplifier)
  • "The amplifiers (alone or in combination) deliver a sense of authority the like of which few have heard from an amplifier in decades. We use the term 'muscular' occasionally in audio reviewing, but this is the difference between 'I work out' muscular and 'I just pulled a 20-ton truck with my teeth' muscular, and you hear it at the first beat of a kick drum." About the brand

Pilium is a Greek maker of amplifiers and preamplifiers, founded in 2014 by longtime audiophiles. Everything is hand-built and finished with what the company calls a bare-voicing approach. The Master Divine Line preamplifier uses a quad-mono, three-chassis layout and a volume control with only one resistor in the signal path. The Divine and Master Divine lines include mono and stereo power amplifiers rated at 300 to 450 watts into 8 ohms. In the Divine Line, the Leonidas is a one-box integrated amplifier, while the Ares preamplifier suits buyers building separates.

About the brand

darTZeel is a Swiss amplifier maker built on the ideas of designer Hervé Delétraz, who listens first and measures afterwards. Its amplifiers keep the signal path short, choosing inputs without switches or relays and setting volume with a contactless optical control. The NHB-108 Model Two revisits the amplifier where the brand began and has no global negative feedback. Red casework with gold front panels marks the whole range. Owners who pair the NHB-18NS preamplifier with a darTZeel power amplifier can join them over the brand's 50-ohm BNC link, which matches impedance between the two.

About the brand

soulution is a Swiss maker of amplifiers, preamplifiers, DACs and phono stages, created by audio enthusiasts Cyrill Hammer and Roland Manz. Its circuits are built for very high speed, which lets them use heavy local negative feedback to reduce distortion and phase errors. Switch-mode power supplies keep the voltage stable under load. The DACs use Zero-Phase technology to reduce timing errors. The 760 DAC has digital volume control, so it can feed a power amplifier directly. Reviewers describe a natural sound with a three-dimensional soundstage they compare to tubes.

About the brand

Block Audio is a Czech amplifier maker whose preamplifiers run on batteries, which keeps the audio circuits isolated from AC power. Its battery preamplifier uses a dual-mono layout across two chassis, with a separate battery bank for each channel and a short signal path. The matching monoblock power amplifiers are Class-A designs in aluminum chassis with a very high damping factor for tight control of the speakers. Bought together, the preamplifier and monoblocks work as one system, with the preamp monitoring the amplifiers' temperature and setting their operating modes.
