What's unique about the brand

Electrocompaniet is a Norwegian amplifier maker that has designed and built its products in Norway since 1973. Its first amplifier grew out of Dr. Matti Otala's research into transient intermodulation distortion, and its circuits use a high open-loop bandwidth design called AmpliWire with low negative feedback. The west coast factory makes the parts and components as well as assembling them. The ECI 80D integrated adds Bluetooth streaming, a phono stage and headphone outputs, and the ECI 6 DX MKII builds in a DAC and streamer. Reviewers describe the house sound as warm and natural.

Brand overview

Soon after Electrocompaniet released its first amplifier in 1976, The Audio Critic called it the best-sounding transistor amplifier in the world. It grew out of Matti Otala's research into why transistor amps of the day didn't sound credible. Many of them used heavy negative feedback, which sends part of the output back to the input to cancel errors. Push that too far, Dick Olsher of Enjoy the Music explains, and the circuit can overshoot and clip on sudden peaks in the music. Electrocompaniet's research found that feedback around individual stages works better than one big loop around the whole amplifier. Tony Cordesman of The Absolute Sound credits the brand with some of the first transistor amps to keep the "natural lower-midrange warmth" of good tube designs. CEO Bjørn Kindingstad calls the house sound the "Nordic Tone" and says listeners won't get tired, "especially when it gets loud." The brand suits people who listen for hours and want warmth without fatigue.

The integrated amps are the easy way in, and the ECI 80D is the one to try first. Steve Guttenberg ran it into very different speakers, from high-sensitivity Zus to open baffles, found that "this amplifier can scale," and called it "the most transparent integrated I've heard in quite some time." Marc Rushton of StereoNET drove 3-ohm VAF speakers, a demanding load, and found it perfectly comfortable. If you want streaming built in, the ECI 6 DX MKII adds a streamer and DAC along with more power, and the host of HiFi Huff named it his "favorite integrated amplifier all-in-one of all time." The step up is separates. The AW power amps take balanced XLR inputs only, so plan on a balanced preamp. For the flagship AW 800 M, Andrew Everard of Hi-Fi News suggests buying one for stereo and adding a second later. Electrocompaniet's Lasse Danielsen told Stereophile the company got its best results plugging the AW 800 M straight into the wall, not into a power conditioner.

Tony Cordesman reviewed that first 25-watt amplifier, designed by Otala and Jan Lohstroh, and remembers it as "a real breakthrough for the time." The brand's best story comes from a recording studio. In 1991, the company says, a pair of its amplifiers was flown to engineer Bruce Swedien at Larrabee Studio in Los Angeles, just after he had finished Michael Jackson's Dangerous. Swedien said "this amplifier changed my life," and Electrocompaniet amplification was used all the way through the production of HIStory, which carries a special thanks to the company. The AW 250 arrived in 1987 and the AW 180 monoblock in 1994. David Price of StereoNET found that the AW250 R takes speakers by the scruff of their necks and shakes them "like an Alsatian dog with a rag doll." For its 50th anniversary Electrocompaniet built the AW 800 M as its flagship. Everything is built in Tau, near Stavanger, where Hi-Fi News says circuit boards to final checking stay under one roof.

Products overview

Every Electrocompaniet amplifier uses the AmpliWire circuit with high open loop bandwidth and low negative feedback, built in Norway, which reviewers hear as warm and natural. The RENA SA2 adds a DAC and streaming to 75 watts a channel, enough for small speakers in a compact box. The ECI 6 DX MKII gives 125 watts a channel for larger speakers. The AW 800 M Reference reaches 300 watts a channel for the hardest loads. Wireless TANA speakers and the Sira L-1 subwoofer form the EC Living line for multiroom.

  • Start here. Someone with a small room and compact speakers who wants streaming and amplification in one box should pick the RENA SA2.
  • Sweet spot. The ECI 6 DX MKII gives a buyer with a larger room one chassis holding amp, DAC and streamer, with 125 watts a channel to drive bigger speakers than the RENA SA2 can.
  • All in. The AW 800 M Reference is priced well above the AW 300 M, and its 300 watts a channel and mono, stereo and bi-amp modes suit a buyer with big, hard to drive speakers.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • Electrocompaniet's design is often described as "Norwegian" or "Nordic" emphasizing a sound signature that is "relaxed," "warm," "natural," and "organic," aiming for long-term listening enjoyment without fatigue and to evoke imagery of the Nordic landscape and nature.
  • Electrocompaniet components use direct-coupled, high open-loop bandwidth topology, enhanced by high slew-rate and very high-bandwidth amplifier stages, referred to as "Ampliwire 2" technology, which emphasizes amplifying the source signal without coloration.
  • Electrocompaniet's amps offer significant flexibility by functioning in stereo, bi-amp, or bridged-mono modes, and some models include customizable DSP settings, such as speaker size, crossover, and bass gain adjustments.
  • Electrocompaniet is committed to in-house design and manufacturing, taking place entirely in Norway, with close quality control over the entire process from PCB production to final assembly.

Quotes we liked:

  • "The timbre of the grouped voices was reproduced so naturally that it was a 'raising the hairs on the back of your neck' moment – we all crave a special connection to our chosen music, and this delivered it. It isn't all auditory fireworks from the AW 300 M, however, as it can also kick back and relax with dreamy music like Nine Horses ' Atom and Cell – which oozed syrupy smoothness." (https://www.stereonet.com/uk/reviews/electrocompaniet-aw-300-m-power-amplifier-review)
  • "They do well at giving large, complex orchestral music and opera all the realism you can achieve in a home audio system, and they provide about as convincing an illusion of live music in reproducing chamber pieces, smaller jazz groups, soloists, and lead singers as anything approaching their price. They get both the timbre and the dynamics of woodwinds, brass, and complex strings right—and far too few hifi components do." (https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/electrocompaniet-ecc-1-cd-player-ec-47-preamp-and-aw180-monoblock-power-amplifier-tas-198)"Most notable is the magic that now happens in the midrange. Mind you, this is not a "tube" kind of magic. It's not a sweet or rich sound but rather a very lifelike, live-band-like communicative power that becomes ever more invigorating the longer (and the louder:-) you listen." About the brand

LUXMAN still fits tone controls to its flagship amplifiers, using a circuit that goes back to the SQ-5A of 1961. The Japanese company started its business in 1925, the year radio broadcasting began in Japan, and builds amplifiers, tube models among them, alongside analog and digital players. Reviewers hear a musical, natural sound. The larger power amplifiers use LUXMAN's own circuits, ODNF in the M-700u and M-900u and LIFES in the M-10X. The M-200 can be bridged to mono for more power, and the L-590AXII is on our All Class A Amplifiers list.

About the brand

Bel Canto Design is an American electronics maker, founded in 1991 and named for the Italian phrase for beautiful singing. John Stronczer started the company in Minneapolis, where the whole range is still built. Its designs combine analog and digital techniques to carry the signal intact to the loudspeaker. The Black platform is the flagship, and the E1X series is built on the same technology. Its integrated amplifiers can include a built-in DAC and DSP bass management, so a single box handles both conversion and amplification.
