Srajan Ebaen of SoundStage! tells how John Stronczer, in Paris in the early 1980s, heard Jean Hiraga's group play Altec horn speakers through a few watts of single-ended tube power and left "thunderstruck." Stronczer went on to found Bel Canto, which made its name with tube amplifiers built around the big 845 triode. Today he builds with class D modules and calls them "the 21st Century 845 triode." A class D amplifier switches its output transistors fully on and off at very high speed, so it wastes little of its power as heat. Bel Canto puts a circuit of its own design in front of each Hypex module, Stronczer says. Steven Stone of The Absolute Sound heard no hiss or hum from a properly set up E1X even with his ears next to the drivers, and Michael Lavorgna of Twittering Machines found it "strikingly silent." Bel Canto suits listeners who want a quiet, compact system with a firm hold on their speakers.

The e.One series is the way in. The e.One C6i integrated is less than nine inches wide and still has a DAC, a phono stage and 125 watts a channel. On a big open-baffle speaker Steve Guttenberg noticed "how fast the bass was, how grippy it was," and with Magnepan panels he added a small REL subwoofer from the C6i's preamp outputs. The step up is the E1X integrated, which adds network streaming, a phono stage for moving-coil cartridges and tools for tuning the sound. John Atkinson of Stereophile likens its Tilt control to the one on the Quad 34 preamp of the 1980s, and Marc Phillips of pt.AUDIO used its bass EQ to smooth out uneven bass in his room. The E1X power amp has internal switches to match its gain to the speakers' sensitivity. Above that come Black EX and the flagship Black. Bel Canto recommends leaving its e.One components switched on, and Ken Kessler of Hi-Fi News advises setting the e.One Phono's gain and loading by ear.

Stronczer was designing integrated circuits at Honeywell when he built his first 845 amplifier in his spare time, and he also co-founded a chip design house for fiber-optic communications. Bel Canto's own timeline lists the Aida DAC of 1992, with its own dejitter circuit, and the Orfeo, a 30-watt 845 amplifier, in 1993. The 40-watt SETi40 integrated won France's Diapason d'Or. Then at CES in 2000 Bel Canto showed the EVo 200.2, built on Tripath's Digital Power Processing, and Ebaen reported that Bel Canto was the first high-end maker to use it. He described the move from triodes to digital power as "one huge quantum leap." The Black platform arrived in 2013, and in 2022, the timeline notes, its technology went into YG Acoustics' Vantage LIVE system. Yongki Go of Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity has kept Bel Canto gear in his systems since the Tripath-based eVo 200.2 and uses some of it as review references. Bel Canto says every component is built in Minneapolis.
