What's unique about the brand

Dutch & Dutch's 8c speakers are the first in the world to run commercial third-party software plugins, with built-in RoomMatching technology that uses the room's acoustics to enhance performance rather than fight against it. The speakers include integrated DACs, amplifiers, subwoofers, and DSP in a compact package, while offering unique features like BACCH 3D Spatial Audio for enhanced soundstage from two speakers and EarEQ for personalized hearing correction.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • Dutch & Dutch speakers employ a cardioid dispersion pattern, achieved through carefully designed vents, that significantly reduces unwanted sound reflections from the front wall.
  • They leverage "Boundary Coupled Bass," strategically coupling the rear-firing woofers with the front wall to enhance low-frequency headroom and directionality.
  • The 8c features a built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processing) which is used to time-align sound, mitigate destructive interference, and enable detailed room matching.
  • The Ascend mobile app allows extensive user control over loudspeaker parameters such as boundary distances, listening triangle dimensions, and customisable equalisation.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "It was obvious from the first note that the 8C is an exceptional monitor. It's difficult to know where to start because there is so much to admire about the 8C, but I'll start with the bass." (https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/dutch-dutch-8c)
  • "Its bandwidth extension down to 25Hz, combined with a fundamentally low level of group delay (around 5ms at 50Hz), huge reserves of power and none of the compression or non-linear effects of ports together almost completely remove any of the monitor-borne bass artifacts we're so used to tolerating when using more conventional speakers." (https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/dutch-dutch-8c)
  • "I don't mind confessing that a couple of times I laughed out loud with the sheer fun of discovery, the music I played giving up its secrets so effortlessly – there were occasions when time seemed to whizz by as I listened to track after track, something I haven't done in a while." (https://audiomediainternational.com/review-dutch-dutch-8c)
  • "In my smallish room, the 8cs delivered full-range bass -- down to 20Hz -- with a firmness, authority, and punch I'd never experienced before. Their midrange was accurate and smooth, if anything leaning slightly to the warm side; their top end was engaging, free of grain, and never over accentuated." (https://www.soundstagehifi.com/index.php/equipment-reviews/1270-dutch-dutch-8c-active-loudspeakers)
  • "The result is so three dimensional that I feel like I can aurally walk around a drum set and inspect the toms in some songs! They're even physically beautiful, with solid oak enclosures and different face colors available." (https://tapeop.com/reviews/gear/142/8c-powered-monitors)
  • "It has that rare combination of precision and a relaxed presentation, which is utterly addictive. You can hear right into recordings and play them as loud as you like without any sense of discomfort, it's almost dangerous from a hearing preservation point of view." About the brand

Vivid Audio's loudspeakers feature unique, nature-inspired shapes and glass-reinforced composite materials that minimize cabinet resonances and diffraction. Their proprietary Tapered Tube Loading technology and drivers made from the same alloy (developed by former B&W Nautilus designer Laurence Dickie) work together to deliver uncolored sound that makes the speakers seem to disappear in the room.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Unlike the vast majority of our competitors, who simply use others' active components, we have, from inception, March 2001, designed and manufactured our very own bespoke, proprietary drive units. The resultant filter networks are ridiculously simple. By controlling the whole process, we are able to derive the exact response from each in it's system. A little appreciated advange too, is we are able to provide spare parts for an extended period.

Any vibrating device will impart that vibration to the substrate to which it is fixed. At Vivid Audio at no time do we couple drive units to the cabinet directly, each is decoupled by a carefully selected soft, 30 shore silicone, memory free O ring. In the case of bass units, we go one step futher - in addition to the decoupling O ring, each driver is apposed by another identical bass unit in a reaction cancelling configuration. Expensive, resulting in an inert cabinet. Note the lack of visible fixing harware.

A perfect acoustic solution.

(No matter how heavy you make a loudspeaker cabinet, all one is doing is shifting the damped resonances in band. Place your ear against any loudspeaker to appreciate this. The worst case example is the ubiquitous eccentricly loaded sub woofer.)

We strive for as lower mass as possible in an extremely stiff configuration. The lower the mass, the lower the energy strorage. The same requirement as aircraft, race cars etc. There are many other unique technologies we employ, jointly presenting the cleanest window into the music. Our web page details these.

It would be foolhardy of me to send you a short list - by definition would exclude many excellent brands of which we have no knowledge. Suffice to say: Unusually, we expend an exorbitant effort in perfecting the loudspeaker / room interface, no sharp perturbations, corners, discontinuities, etc., and the loudspeaker / amplifier interface, ensuring at the minimum impedance, the current and voltage waveforms are close to being in phase - an ideal situation. Our loudspeakers present an easy load to the amplifier. Quality rather than quantity is emphasized.
