What's unique about the brand

CH Precision is a Swiss maker of amplifiers, DACs and disc players, founded by Florian Cossy. Its products are modular, so owners configure each unit with option modules and can upgrade it later without replacing the whole component. Its amplifiers use ExactBias circuitry and a feedback ratio the owner can adjust to suit the speakers. Each 10 Series model, such as the M10 and L10, puts its power supply in a separate chassis, and the 1 Series includes the I1 integrated amplifier. The L1 is on our Best Preamplifiers list.

Brand overview

Alan Taffel of The Absolute Sound had never noticed a little bass line in the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice" until he hooked up a CH Precision I1 integrated amplifier, and then it was "perfectly distinct." CH Precision's big idea is to hand the owner a dial most amp makers keep to themselves. Nearly every amplifier uses feedback, a loop that compares what comes out with what went in and corrects the difference. More of it gives the amp a firmer grip on the woofers, and too much, CH says, can blur timing and flatten dynamics. So CH builds its amps to work well with none and lets the owner choose how much to add. Jacob Heilbrunn puts the tradeoff simply: "The more feedback you use, the better bass control tends to become, but the price is usually a murkier overall sound." In the 10 Series, Robert Harley hears "body, timbral warmth, and dense tone color." CH suits listeners who want to tune an amplifier to their own speakers and room.

The I1 integrated is the place to start, because it puts most of CH's ideas in one box. Taffel found its amp section nearly identical to CH's A1 stereo amplifier, and its back panel takes plug-in boards for phono, streaming and USB, so it can grow with you. Alan Sircom of Hi-Fi+ says the sound of the separates comes down to the I1 "not so much 'trickle down' as 'rushes down in a torrent'." If you move to separates, Sircom's advice for the L1 preamp is to add the X1 power supply before a second L1, then go straight to the full four boxes. He also put the preamps on one table and the power supplies on another, a "brains stack" and a "brawn stack," and heard the noise floor drop a notch. Use the feedback dial with your room in mind. CH suggests more of it for speakers with heavy woofers or rooms with a lot of bass. Florian Cossy, the founder, adds one speaker rule, which is to avoid large horns in very small rooms.

Cossy was hired by Goldmund as a graduate in the mid-1990s, and he had dreamed of working there. He then spent 10 years designing for other brands, where cost versus performance was always a trade-off. Cossy founded CH Precision, which made its first products in 2009 and builds them in Préverenges, near Lausanne. The letters CH happen to be Switzerland's country code. The casework takes its cue from luxury watches, with small pins to locate parts and screws only to hold them together. CH's early range was built around a disc drive and a DAC, and Cossy says it was long seen as a maker of digital sources before people recognized its amplifiers. Sircom places CH on a Swiss continuum between the "slightly lush-sounding Nagra" and the "almost surgical precision of the Soulution." The 10 Series came around the company's 10th anniversary, and Roy Gregory counted it among the two or three products a decade that reset his expectations. "This is like Sergei Bubka turning up to the 1924 Olympics," he wrote. Harley named the L10 and M10 a 2022 Golden Ear and calls them "my reference electronics."

Products overview

Every CH Precision amplifier has adjustable feedback, so the owner can tune it to the speakers. The I1 integrated gives 100 watts per channel with inputs built in, so one box serves a small system. The M1.1 gives 200 watts and can become a monobloc for harder speakers. The M10 gives 300 watts with a separate power supply chassis. The brand also makes preamplifiers, DACs and disc players across its 1 Series and 10 Series.

  • Start here. Choose the I1 if you want an amplifier with digital and analog inputs in one box for a modest room.
  • Sweet spot. The A1.5 suits an owner who may change speakers later, since it gives 150 watts and converts to monobloc, bridged or bi-amp, while the models above mostly add more power.
  • All in. The M10 is a priced-up refinement of the M1.1 recipe above $50,000, and its 300 watts and finer 1% feedback steps let a buyer with large, demanding speakers tune the amplifier closely to them.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • CH Precision's modular design allows for extensive customization and upgradability of its components, protecting customer investment and offering future-proof audio solutions.
  • They emphasize precise signal management through proprietary technologies such as ExactBias circuitry and adjustable feedback ratios, enabling optimization for various speaker systems and listening preferences.
  • The brand's components are built to exacting standards, using high-quality materials and construction techniques akin to luxury watchmaking, resulting in aesthetically refined and robust products.
  • CH Precision utilizes sophisticated software and hardware to continuously monitor and adjust the performance of its amplifiers, actively counteracting DC offset and optimising temperature for consistent and linear output.

Quotes we liked:

  • "The M1.1 has a magical sense of projecting the music to the listener so convincingly that you can feel it coming and passing you by and traveling off into space. While I know all sound waves propagate in this way, this was different than I've experienced before, and I struggle to articulate it adequately." (https://futureaudiophile.com/ch-precision-m1-1-amplifier-reviewed)
  • "Likewise, the A1 was the first amplifier that I heard to combine incredible speed, dynamics, articulation, and transparency with amazing fluidity, naturalness and overall finesse. In my book, all of these attributes just could not be combined in a single amp, but CH Precision made it happen." (https://www.hifi-advice.com/blog/amplifier-reviews/power-amplifier-reviews/ch-precision-a1-5-part1)
  • "So, spoiler alert: The CH Precision L1 / A1.5 combination is, by some margin, the best-sounding amplifier I've had in my system, and one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. So, you've got your answer and those of you with busy lives can go off and do busy things now, if you need to." (https://gy8.eu/review/the-ch-precision-l1-pre-amp-and-a1-5-stereo-power-amplifier)
  • "Sonically, the 10 Series has a pristine rendering and exquisite resolution of fine detail without sounding analytical. The highly detailed rendering for which CH Precision is known is there, but accompanied by body, timbral warmth, and dense tone color—a compelling combination." (https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/ch-precision-l10-dual-monaural-linestage-preamplifier-and-m10-two-channel-reference-power-amplifier)
  • "The L10 and M10 have the purest and most direct presentation I've heard from audio electronics, like water turned into sound. This isn't a byproduct of some canny combination of pleasing colorations, but instead a complete lack of them." (https://www.theaudiobeat.com/equipment/chprecisionl10_m10.htm)

About the brand

darTZeel is a Swiss amplifier maker built on the ideas of designer Hervé Delétraz, who listens first and measures afterwards. Its amplifiers keep the signal path short, choosing inputs without switches or relays and setting volume with a contactless optical control. The NHB-108 Model Two revisits the amplifier where the brand began and has no global negative feedback. Red casework with gold front panels marks the whole range. Owners who pair the NHB-18NS preamplifier with a darTZeel power amplifier can join them over the brand's 50-ohm BNC link, which matches impedance between the two.

About the brand

soulution is a Swiss maker of amplifiers, preamplifiers, DACs and phono stages, created by audio enthusiasts Cyrill Hammer and Roland Manz. Its circuits are built for very high speed, which lets them use heavy local negative feedback to reduce distortion and phase errors. Switch-mode power supplies keep the voltage stable under load. The DACs use Zero-Phase technology to reduce timing errors. The 760 DAC has digital volume control, so it can feed a power amplifier directly. Reviewers describe a natural sound with a three-dimensional soundstage they compare to tubes.

About the brand

Block Audio is a Czech amplifier maker whose preamplifiers run on batteries, which keeps the audio circuits isolated from AC power. Its battery preamplifier uses a dual-mono layout across two chassis, with a separate battery bank for each channel and a short signal path. The matching monoblock power amplifiers are Class-A designs in aluminum chassis with a very high damping factor for tight control of the speakers. Bought together, the preamplifier and monoblocks work as one system, with the preamp monitoring the amplifiers' temperature and setting their operating modes.

About the brand

Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems is an American amplifier company, founded in 2011. Dan D'Agostino had started Krell in 1980, and his team now hand-builds every product in Cave Creek, Arizona. The amplifiers are known for lacquered copper heatsinks with venturi tunnels and Breguet-style dials, and Dan D'Agostino wants solid-state sound as ear-friendly as the best tube amplifiers. Progression is the more accessible series, with Momentum above it and Relentless at the top. The Progression Integrated takes an optional streaming module and phono stage, so streaming and a turntable need no extra boxes.
