What's unique about the brand

Chario is an Italian loudspeaker maker, founded in Milan in 1975, that designs and builds its own drivers and cabinets in Italy. Many cabinets use solid Italian walnut, often aged for long periods. Reversed vertical driver arrays and down-firing woofers work with the crossover to control the reflection off the floor, which can cut or boost an octave in the piano's central range. The Constellation MK2 series includes bookshelf models such as the Constellation Lynx MK2 and Constellation Delphinus MK2, while the Academy series is the top line.

Brand overview

While reviewing the Aviator Amelia for Stereophile, Julie Mullins kept reaching for live recordings, and she heard the speakers bring "a sense of aliveness or liveness" to the music. Guy Lemcoe of The Audio Beat got up from his seat during a Jamaaladeen Tacuma funk track and did a few turns in front of his pair. Chario's big idea starts with the floor. Sound from a tower reaches you twice, once directly and once bounced off the floor a moment later, and where the two copies meet they can cancel or pile up, right around the middle of a piano. So Chario puts the tweeter below the midrange, which lifts the midrange farther from the floor, and on the Amelia a woofer fires down toward a steel base plate. Chario suits listeners who put natural voices and instruments first.

The Amelia, the smallest floorstander in the Aviator series, is a good place to start. Chris Baillie of The Ear found it "easy to drive," though he points fans of electronic music or organ works further up the range. Mullins says to "get the plates" that go under it, and Lemcoe heard them tighten everything up and widen the soundstage. For a smaller room, the Constellation Delphinus MK2 bookshelf speaker is the pick. Its port fires downward, so its feet must stay on. The step up is the Academy series at the top of the range. Michael Fremer found the Academy Sovrans the least fussy speakers he had ever set up in his room. Angle matters, though. Anthony Kershaw of Audiophilia tried his Sovrans firing straight ahead, went back to Chario's suggested 10 degrees and found the image firmer.

Chario began in Milan in 1975. Carlo (Charlie) Vicenzetto and Mario Marcello Murace were engineers at the University of Milan, and the name combines parts of their first names. Mullins writes that both were interested in how speakers energize the air in real rooms and how the head, ears and chest take in sound. Murace is still its chief engineer, and Alessandro Migliorini told Australian Hi-Fi that as far as he knows no other audio company over 40 years old has kept the same audio engineer since its founding. Chario designs and builds its own drivers near Ancona, and the cabinets are made near Vicenza, with Italian walnut sides finished by hand. Kershaw once played the pianist Robert Silverman some of his own Beethoven recordings on Academy Sovrans, and Silverman told him he had never heard them so accurately. The Delphinus went on to win Sound + Image's 2020 Loudspeaker of the Year award in its price class.

Products overview

Chario builds its own drivers and cabinets in Italy, many in solid walnut, and its driver arrays and crossovers control the floor reflection that can cut or boost an octave in the piano's central range. The Constellation Lynx MK2 is the entry, a bookshelf with a 130 mm woofer that reaches 67 Hz in a small room. Aviator Amelia adds a midrange and two woofers, reaching 48 Hz for a larger room. Academy Serendipity adds two 320 mm subwoofers and reaches 23 Hz.

  • Start here. Choose the Constellation Lynx MK2 if you are filling a small room on a tight budget with an amplifier around 100 watts.
  • Sweet spot. The Constellation Pegasus MK2 gives a living room a floorstanding cabinet at 90 dB sensitivity, so a 140 watt amplifier drives it, and it reaches 45 Hz, deeper than the bookshelf models below.
  • All in. Academy Serendipity is a statement piece priced well above everything else, and its two 320 mm subwoofers let a large room hear bass notes down to 23 Hz, far deeper than any model below.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews, and here's what stands out:

  • Chario loudspeakers are distinguished by their entirely in-house design and construction, encompassing even the production of their own drivers and cabinetry.
  • The brand emphasizes the integration of solid, locally-sourced Italian walnut in their cabinet construction, often aged for extended periods to optimize acoustic properties.
  • They implement unique driver configurations, such as reversed arrays and down-firing woofers, to optimize performance in typical listening environments by minimizing room reflections and phase distortions.

Quotes we liked:

  • "With a sensitivity of 93dB and a low-frequency cut-off at 23Hz, these speakers deliver an astonishingly detailed soundstage. The bass response is particularly noteworthy - deep, controlled, and natural." (https://www.theaudiotailor.com.au/blogs/reviews/chario-academy-serendipity-floor-standing-speakers-review-a-masterclass-in-italian-audio-engineering)
  • "The Amelia's sonic presentation is nothing short of magnificent. With a sensitivity of 90dB SPL and a recommended amplifier power of 150W/4ohm, these speakers deliver an expansive soundstage with remarkable clarity." (https://www.theaudiotailor.com.au/blogs/reviews/chario-aviator-amelia-floor-standing-speakers-review-italian-mastery-meets-sonic-excellence)
  • "The three-way configuration, featuring the T-38 tweeter and dual 160mm drivers, creates an expansive soundstage that must be heard to be believed. The bass extension down to 45Hz provides a foundation that's both muscular and refined." About the brand

Rosso Fiorentino is an Italian speaker maker founded by electroacoustic designer Francesco Rubenni. The company is based near Florence and takes its name from a 16th-century Florentine painter. Rubenni brings musician friends into the listening sessions where each model is tuned. Cabinets use multi-layer construction, constrained-layer damping and internal bracing to control resonance, and reviewers describe the sound as natural and balanced. The compact entry-level model is easy to drive and suits smaller rooms. The Icone series, which includes the Siena, is the top line, and the Volterra and Certaldo are earlier designs.

About the brand

Franco Serblin is an Italian speaker brand from Vicenza, named for its founder, who modeled his speakers on lutes and violins, their woods and their shapes. The cabinets are curved solid wood, air-dried for months in Vicenza and finished in Italian leather, and the tuning aims for a natural, emotionally involving sound. The range is small and changes slowly. The compact Lignea uses a refraction chamber to control resonance, the Accordo models are the core of the line, and the Ktêma is the flagship.

About the brand

Vivid Audio is a British loudspeaker maker whose designs come from Laurence Dickie. Every model uses drivers, crossovers and enclosures that the company makes by hand. Each driver is backed by a tapered tube that absorbs the sound coming off its rear, and the bass drivers are arranged so their reaction forces cancel. The curved cabinet shapes keep resonance and reflection low. The Kaya models suit smaller rooms and home theaters, and the Giya series adds more drivers. The Moya M1 flagship is built around a stack of bass drivers for extended low frequencies.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Unlike the vast majority of our competitors, who simply use others' active components, we have, from inception, March 2001, designed and manufactured our very own bespoke, proprietary drive units. The resultant filter networks are ridiculously simple. By controlling the whole process, we are able to derive the exact response from each in it's system. A little appreciated advange too, is we are able to provide spare parts for an extended period.

Any vibrating device will impart that vibration to the substrate to which it is fixed. At Vivid Audio at no time do we couple drive units to the cabinet directly, each is decoupled by a carefully selected soft, 30 shore silicone, memory free O ring. In the case of bass units, we go one step futher - in addition to the decoupling O ring, each driver is apposed by another identical bass unit in a reaction cancelling configuration. Expensive, resulting in an inert cabinet. Note the lack of visible fixing harware.

A perfect acoustic solution.

(No matter how heavy you make a loudspeaker cabinet, all one is doing is shifting the damped resonances in band. Place your ear against any loudspeaker to appreciate this. The worst case example is the ubiquitous eccentricly loaded sub woofer.)

We strive for as lower mass as possible in an extremely stiff configuration. The lower the mass, the lower the energy strorage. The same requirement as aircraft, race cars etc. There are many other unique technologies we employ, jointly presenting the cleanest window into the music. Our web page details these.

What's your approach to customer support?

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

What other products pair best with yours?

It would be foolhardy of me to send you a short list - by definition would exclude many excellent brands of which we have no knowledge. Suffice to say: Unusually, we expend an exorbitant effort in perfecting the loudspeaker / room interface, no sharp perturbations, corners, discontinuities, etc., and the loudspeaker / amplifier interface, ensuring at the minimum impedance, the current and voltage waveforms are close to being in phase - an ideal situation. Our loudspeakers present an easy load to the amplifier. Quality rather than quantity is emphasized.

About the brand

Qln is a Swedish speaker maker, started in 1977 with an idea about how a loudspeaker should reproduce the soundstage. Its speakers are time aligned, often with a slanted baffle, and the cabinets are built from Qboard, a damped sandwich material that keeps resonance down. Qln develops its drive units with its suppliers, including coated Kevlar mid-woofers, and voices the speakers for living rooms. Reviewers describe the sound as natural and coherent. The compact two-way Prestige One suits smaller rooms. The Prestige Three and Prestige Five are floorstanders, and the Reference 9 is a three-way.
