What's unique about the brand

Doshi Audio is an American maker of tube electronics, started by Nick Doshi in 2006. Doshi had built audio equipment for friends for years before that, and every component is still handcrafted in America with two stated goals, to stay true to the signal and to run trouble-free. The Evolution series covers line, phono and tape preamplifiers, a stereo amplifier and monoblocks. The Evolution Tape Preamplifier gives a tape deck its own dedicated playback stage. Stereophile described the sound of an earlier Doshi monoblock as warm and three-dimensional.

Brand overview

As a young engineer at a radio station in New Jersey, Nick Doshi built a solid-state phono preamplifier for his employer. At a friend's house it lost a listening comparison to a Counterpoint tube phono preamp built on a modified circuit from a 1954 handbook. Doshi decided the simpler design had gotten out of the way of the music, and he says every product since has followed that lesson. His circuits stay simple and use as little negative feedback as possible. Feedback is a correction loop that compares the output with the input and fixes the difference, and Doshi would rather start with tubes that behave well on their own. He calls the tubes designed by RCA and Sylvania engineers "the most linear amplification devices." Jacob Heilbrunn of Tracking Angle describes the sound as "fast, dynamic and linear." Doshi suits listeners who want tube tone with drive, especially for records and tape.

Many owners start with one box, Doshi told HiFi Knights, usually the tape or phono preamplifier, and add the line stage and amplifiers later. If you own a reel-to-reel deck, the Evolution Tape Preamplifier is the one to try. It connects straight to the deck's playback head and replaces the deck's own playback electronics. Dave McNair of Part-Time Audiophile, a mastering engineer, played master tapes through it and through the stock electronics of his Ampex ATR-102, and the Doshi gave him a clearer top end and tighter, harder-hitting bass. For a newcomer, he suggests a serviced Pioneer, Technics, Akai or Teac deck modified for direct access to the playback head. Record lovers should start with the Evolution Phono, which has plenty of gain for low-output moving-coil cartridges and lets you set loading from the remote. With the amplifiers, try different bias settings, because Doshi says they change the sound. Jason Victor Serinus of Stereophile heard clearer contrast between violin and piano at lower settings and more bass at higher ones.

Doshi's interest in audio began at about 10, when a recording engineer played him the tape of a concert he had just recorded on a Nakamichi cassette deck. He studied physics and then electrical engineering, got his start fixing tape machines at his college radio station, and spent more than 25 years in radio and television broadcasting, including work for PBS. In 2003 a visitor who came to his house to buy a used preamplifier heard one Doshi had built for himself and asked for a copy. Doshi Audio dates its start to 2006, and its first product was the Alaap preamplifier. For years most of the customers were audio professionals and manufacturers, and Doshi calls the brand of that period the industry's "best-kept secret." The tape preamplifier began as a demonstration project for shows, and Lee Scoggins of Part-Time Audiophile titled his report on Doshi's AXPONA 2018 room "Nick Doshi Builds a Time Machine." Ken Micallef of Stereophile called the Evolution Stereo "one of the best amplifiers I've heard."

Products overview

Every Evolution model has a redesigned power supply, so music comes from a very quiet background. The Evolution Line Preamplifier switches four sources, each RCA or XLR, so a whole system connects through one remote controlled unit. The Evolution Stereo Amplifier adds 65 watts per channel. The Evolution Monoblock gives each channel at least 160 watts from four KT150 tubes, so harder speakers play louder with more ease. The Evolution Phono Preamplifier and Evolution Tape Preamplifier serve vinyl and tape decks.

  • Start here. A vinyl listener building a first Doshi system picks the Evolution Phono Preamplifier, which sets cartridge loading from the remote and stores two MC settings.
  • Sweet spot. The Evolution Stereo Amplifier suits an owner who wants one amp for a whole system, and it gives tube output with a hybrid design that the preamplifiers alone cannot.
  • All in. The Evolution Monoblock extends the Stereo Amplifier recipe with more power, so buyers with demanding speakers get the dynamics and bass slam the maker compares with the best solid state amps.

About the brand

conrad-johnson is an American maker of tube preamplifiers and amplifiers, started by two economists, Bill Conrad and Lew Johnson. They began selling their own equipment in 1977, and every c-j component is still designed and built by hand in the USA. The circuits are simple, with minimal feedback, and use the company's own CJD film capacitors and transformers. The Classic 62 and Classic 120 use EL34 tubes and have built-in bias indicators, which makes them easy first tube amplifiers. The ART27A is a Class A triode amplifier, a natural match for highly efficient speakers.

About the brand

Western Electric is an American maker of vacuum tubes and hifi equipment, established in 1869. It was re-established in 1996 solely to make electron tubes and hifi, and it now builds at its Rossville Works in Georgia, where tube machinery from its 1961 Kansas City Works is still in use. Its engineers invented the first high vacuum tube in the early 1910s, and the 300B triode was commissioned in 1938. The catalog adds amplifiers, a CD player, speaker drivers and hookup wire. The 91E, its bestselling amplifier, combines preamp and power amp in one chassis.

About the brand

Zesto Audio is an American maker of tube electronics, based in Thousand Oaks, California. Founders George and Carolyn Counnas run the company, and George, its design engineer, started from classic RCA tube circuits of the 1930s, modeled them in CAD software and finished each design by ear. Every product is hand-built in the USA and burned in for 50 hours at the factory. The range covers phonostages, step-up transformers, a preamplifier, power amplifiers and a DAC. The Andros phonostages have a separate ground lift switch for each channel to help keep noise down.

About the brand

ampsandsound is a small family tube amplifier maker in Southern California, inspired by midcentury American circuits and the Japanese builders who refined them. It designs dedicated power, output and input transformers for each product and sizes each core for twice the output of its circuit, on the view that over-specified transformers distort less. Amplifiers are hand-assembled on 10-gauge steel chassis, mostly wired point to point on turret boards. The 17-watt Little Nugget suits high-sensitivity speakers in small rooms, and the Agartha is on our All SET Amplifiers list.

About the brand

VTL is an American maker of high-power tube amplifiers and preamplifiers, built in its own facility in Chino, California. Its aim is to make tubes easy to live with, so many of its amplifiers bias their own tubes automatically and watch for faults. A clean box and dirty box approach separates the audio circuits from the power supply and controls to keep noise down. The S-200 Signature has a fully balanced circuit and a damping factor the owner can adjust to suit the speakers. The monoblocks include the Siegfried Series II Reference.

About the brand

Balanced Audio Technology, usually called BAT, is an American maker of tube, solid-state and hybrid amplifiers built around fully balanced circuits, which it uses to keep noise low. Many designs use the Russian 6C33C-B tube, and many replace fuses with electronic protection circuits. The hybrids pair a tube preamplifier stage with a solid-state output stage. The VK-3500 integrated amplifier is one of these hybrids and adds a built-in MM/MC phono stage, so a turntable plugs straight in. The Rex 500 is the dual-mono solid-state flagship.
