What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

Product Strengths

  • The Avantgarde UNO SD's appearance was stunning, with cabinets finished in attractive piano-black lacquer reinforced with carbon fiber inserts
  • The UNO SD's powered subwoofer provided superb bass response reaching a subsonic 18 Hz
  • The UNO SD was able to separate each instrument and place it within a gigantic soundstage
  • The midrange prowess of the UNO SD made each instrument in this huge soundstage sound extremely realistic
  • The high sensitivity (107dB/W/m) of the UNO SD is typical for horn speaker design and engineering

Product Considerations

  • The Avantgarde UNO SDs are large, and they might not fit every room's decor
  • A spouse or partner might need some convincing before these speakers become part of a system

Takeaway: The Avantgarde UNO SD speakers create an amazing soundstage with realistic instrument reproduction, thanks to its powered subwoofer and design. It could be a new reference hornspeaker.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

We are simply fascinated by opposites: A compact horn loudspeaker with a great sound. A reduced, clear exterior with an almost lavishly engineered interior. This is the UNO SD. The UNO is a scaled-down version of the classic DUO system. The aim was to achieve the clarity and performance of its 'big' brother in a much smaller package.

Brand highlights

Taking a step back to look at reviewers' thoughts of the brand's entire lineup—not just this product—what stands out most is the following:

  • Avantgarde Acoustic distinguishes itself by using horn-loaded drivers across the frequency spectrum in many of their designs, prioritizing efficiency and dynamic range over traditional driver configurations.
  • They offer a modular upgrade path with their speakers, allowing users to transition from passive crossovers and traditional amplification to fully active systems utilizing Avantgarde's proprietary iTRON current-drive technology.
  • A core design principle is achieving seamless integration between drivers, particularly between the horn-loaded components and powered subwoofers, using DSP and careful design to create a cohesive soundstage.
  • Avantgarde allows extensive aesthetic customization options, including a wide array of colors for the horns and finishes for the cabinets, enabling customers to tailor their speakers to suit individual tastes and room décor.

Zero Itron:

  • Positioning: The entry-level active speaker in Avantgarde Acoustic's lineup.
  • Description: Features a compact design and iTRON amplifier technology, providing seamless integration and ease of use. Unlike the larger models like the Uno SD, it is ideal for smaller spaces and offers a more budget-friendly option while still delivering the signature Avantgarde sound. Its full-active design with a 3-way system and integrated Class D bass amplifier makes it a versatile choice for those seeking high performance without the need for additional amplifiers.

Uno SD:

  • Positioning: A compact version of the Duo series, designed for smaller rooms while maintaining high performance.
  • Description: Features a compact size and high sensitivity, making it suitable for smaller spaces without compromising on sound quality. It includes a 500mm midrange horn and a newly developed tweeter, offering a natural and clear sound. Compared to the larger Duo GT, the Uno SD is more accessible in terms of space and budget, yet it still provides a rich audio experience with its advanced driver technology and integrated bass amplifier.

Duo GT:

  • Positioning: The most advanced model in the Duo series, offering superior performance and features.
  • Description: Features dual 12-inch bass drivers and 670mm horn, providing exceptional dynamic range and bass response. It incorporates the same tweeter as the Trio G3, ensuring top-tier sound quality. Compared to the Duo SD, the GT offers enhanced bass performance and a more powerful amplifier.

Mezzo:

  • Positioning: A high-end model designed for those who desire top-tier performance without the space requirements of the Trio with SpaceHorn.
  • Description: Inspired by classic designs and offers a full-range horn system with a unique bass reflex configuration. It features dual 12-inch drivers and a 670mm horn, providing a rich and immersive sound. While it approaches the performance of the Trio G3, it is more compact and suitable for those who cannot accommodate the larger Trio setup. Its advanced bass system and modular design make it a standout choice.

Trio G3:

  • Positioning: The flagship model, representing the pinnacle of Avantgarde Acoustic's speaker technology.
  • Description: Features a groundbreaking 3-way horn system with a 109 dB sensitivity. It includes the innovative SpaceHorn for bass, offering an expansive and distortion-free sound. Compared to other models like the Mezzo, the Trio G3 provides the most comprehensive audio experience. Its modular design allows for future upgrades, ensuring long-term value and performance.

Our take on the brand

Avantgarde Acoustic is known for its spherical horn speakers that deliver exceptional sound uniformity and can produce high volume levels with minimal power input, thanks to their unusually high sensitivity of over 104dB. Their flagship products feature advanced digital processing that corrects time and phase issues, while their Zero 1 Pro model stands out for integrating amplifiers and digital crossovers directly into a compact horn speaker design.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Firstly: Most prominently, our spherical horn technology with its precisely calculated wave-launch accounts for a unique appearance, outstanding (typically 104+ dBs/W/m) efficiency, and a favorably controlled sound dispersion in any room and environment. This gives our speakers an objet d'art character and makes amplifier choice a straightforward task: it’s all about sound quality, not about wattage.

Secondly: With launching the G3 series speakers, the range is optionally available in fully active versions, with the horn section powered by a breakthrough innovation regarding the membranes' displacement control: the proprietary iTRON current-drive amplifier technology. Executed in single-ended push-pull, fully Class-A, and zero-feedback topology, iTRON is the ideal and logical choice for offering not just conveniently connectable powered speakers but to consequently provide a musical experience beyond what is possible with customary voltage amplifier technology.

What's your approach to customer support?

Our customer support consists of a network of stipulated regional service providers and a central coordinating office at the factory for prompting the most effective procedures. Standardly, our local instances will be the recommended and most effective support channel (e.g., because of a time zone offset to Germany), while in specific cases, e.g., with "vintage support," our own team of experienced specialists may of course be addressed for appropriate advice and servicing.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Showcasing the famous Allman Brothers Band in an astonishingly intimate frame, on stage in a rather small club (while filling stadiums, usually), is the track "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" from the record An Evening With The Allman Brothers Band – 2nd Set, recorded live in LA around 1992. Listened to by a dynamically capable and highly resolving speaker like from our range, the skillful, fun-driven playing, the vibrant atmosphere, and the cheering public make a "be there" experience par excellence. Ten minutes and fifteen seconds that fly.

Leopold Stokowski's famous Rhapsodies collection from 1960 (on Living Stereo, recorded at Manhattan Center) still holds surprises! While considered to be a "nice recording" anyway by many, especially true for the Liszt "Hungarian Rhapsody No.2," listeners who become exposed to the recording through our speakers realize far greater "ebb and flow" contrast in the orchestra's fantastic playing. At realistic concert level? As you please!

Meraki's "La Fong" track has driven people to tears (of joy…) where one would never think that this is the kind of music they'd fancy. Powerhouse electronic music that combines thrilling dynamics with a wonderful sense of space that does not merely scatter sounds into thin air but makes them glitter. A special, almost limitless trip when listened to by the right set of speakers.

What other products pair best with yours?

Especially in combination with our iTRON amplifiers, the co-branding question does not need an "exclusive" answer. Rather, it deserves an "inclusive" answer, as the high degree of control over the musical result ensured by horns and current-drive has generated feedback from our network that attests many excellent (no matter if praised for a specific strength or for an overall sound balance) source components to make a truly "shining" contribution.

Pylon Audio is a hifi speaker brand that uses advanced technologies like industrial vibrometers and an anechoic chamber, along with unique materials such as Endumax in their driver designs. The brand stands out for its exceptional woodwork that has attracted global orders from other hifi companies, and offers extensive customization through RAL color options, with 60% of their production being exported internationally.

Product Strengths

  • Build quality and sound exceed expectations for the price
  • Beautiful lacquer finish, demonstrating mastery
  • Natural, consistent, smooth, slightly warmed, dynamic, and resolving sound
  • Very good dynamics and space, allowing for an immersive listening experience with proper positioning and equipment
  • Extremely dynamic, natural, full, and versatile sound, particularly for the Jasper 23 Active

Product Considerations

  • Stabilizing plinths are too narrow, making the speakers prone to tipping
  • Matte finishes can be challenging to keep pristine, requiring regular polishing
  • A powerful and high-quality amplifier is necessary to perform at its best, along with a high-end source and audiophile-grade cabling
  • Two bass-reflex ports at the back require more distance between the speakers and the rear wall
  • The Stereo Hub lacks a LAN jack for the active version (Jasper 23 Active)

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Jasper 23's bass focuses on rhythm, pace, dynamics and kick, whereas the Audiovector QR5 provides a subwoofer-type belly massage
  • Both the System Audio Legend 60.2 Silverback and Buchardt Audio A700 are larger than the Jasper 23 Active, making placement in a medium-sized room risky

Takeaway: The Jasper 23 series offers beautiful design and great sound. It is well-built, versatile, and a good choice for those who prioritize audio quality.

Monitor Reference 5a
839
839
/

Reviews

Anyone who has ever wondered whether there are any multi-functional and fully active speakers in fully-fledged dimensions can now answer their question with a resounding yes. With the same front width as the 3A, the Monitor Reference 5A stands 908 mm tall, making it a full-size floorstanding speaker. This format leaves you in no doubt as to whether you have a real hi-fi system in front of you.

COMPACT, BUT WITH A SOUND OF A MUCH LARGER MODEL

The tweeter dome measures 25 mm (like its siblings) and is driven by the tried and tested, powerful ferrite magnet. Underneath there are two 170 mm chassis. One caters for the all-important vocal range as a bass-midrange driver, while the second is designed purely for reproducing the deep bass range. The use of materials really makes an impact here - the floorstanding speaker of the Monitor Reference series delves right down to a frequency of 28 Hz. Nevertheless, the 5A boasts a slim visual appearance and can therefore be set up in any living room environment.

There is even more amplifier power on board here: Each channel has 60 watts of continuous power (or 120 watts of peak power). An HDMI input, phono preamplifier, Bluetooth® with fast aptx® Low Latency capability, as well as analog and digital connections round off the configuration here as well. And we haven´t skimped on the material either: Weighing in at 14.7 and 13.8 kg (active and passive speaker respectively), the Monitor Reference is not unbearable, but it is still considerably sturdy.

Magnat stands out for its pioneering hybrid amplifier technology, particularly with the RV series combining tube preamps and solid-state power stages for precise, warm sound.

Product Strengths

  • Large-scale audio presentation, providing more scale on movies than a similarly priced soundbar
  • Fine musical dexterity
  • Articulate highs and full-bodied mids
  • Precise imaging
  • Excellent connection suite, including HDMI ARC and phono input

Product Considerations

  • Unfulfilling low end, lacking subwoofer-like grunt
  • Sonic character can be a little bright and on the shrill side
  • Remote feels a little cheap and response can be slow
  • Tower speakers are not the obvious choice for arranging tidily around a flat panel display
  • Unrefined when pushed to the limits

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs Similarly Priced Soundbar—the Magnat Monitor Reference 5A offers a completely different set of attributes due to the drivers' size and delivers a more bold and scaled performance and imaging ability, especially for music

Takeaway: The Magnat Monitor Reference 5A offers impressive music performance, while doubling as a cinema speaker system, and has plenty of connectivity options. If music is a priority and the large speaker aesthetic isn't a problem, these speakers are a good value.

• Wireless streaming: Ease of use with Bluetooth aptX connection to provide outstanding audio quality.

• The love of vinyl records: These speakers will appeal to the fans of 33 & 45 rpm records with their phono preamplifier, making it possible to connect any turntable.

• Home theater experience: Featuring optical/coaxial inputs so you can connect the speakers to your TV set and a SUB output to add a subwoofer and enrich the sound of your movies and series.

Triangle is a French speaker manufacturer known for its bright, lively sound and distinctive tweeter designs that use horn-loaded tweeters to enhance high-frequency detail.
Check Amazon
Expand Details

Product Strengths

  • The Elara LN05A integrates an amplifier, DAC, and Bluetooth receiver, making music listening convenient by removing the need for a separate amplifier
  • Features Bluetooth reception with aptX, theoretically capable of transmitting CD-quality music
  • Offers rich functionality with digital (optical) and analog (RCA, 3.5mm) inputs, plus a phono stage for turntable connection
  • Delivers a slightly warm sound with a hint of sweetness, making it appealing to listeners
  • Maintains sound stability and layering even at high volumes, with no signs of audio distortion, indicating a well-configured amplifier

Product Considerations

  • Drum sounds lack some punch
  • Low-end extension is somewhat lacking, which is likely the LN05A's greatest weakness
  • Status display is unclear, making it difficult to know the current volume level or the status of treble and bass adjustments
  • Remote control is crucial; without it, the speaker's functionality is severely limited
  • The status light uses only three colors with no differentiation; even more frustratingly, there's no way to know the current volume level or the status of treble and bass adjustments

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • The built-in phono stage of the LN05A offered a slightly denser—more nuanced—sound
  • DAC isn't as bright as the Micromega MyDAC, but remains competent

Takeaway: The Triangle Elara LN05A is a convenient and functional speaker that simplifies music listening with its integrated amplifier and multiple input options. Its warm and sweet sound signature makes it an enjoyable musical companion for any home.

  • Has a fresh and open sound where no tonal range is left behind, making it easy to listen to
  • Has enough power to fill a large living room
  • Has a full set of analogue and digital inputs, including a turntable input and HDMI input

Product Considerations

  • There is no option to choose whether the active speaker should act as the left or right channel

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Compared to Argon Audio Forte A55, the Fenris A55 is less nuanced
  • Compared to a Bluetooth table speaker or a Sonos Play:5, the Fenris A55 provides 'bloody real stereo'

Takeaway: The Argon Audio Fenris A55 is a full-grown floorstanding speaker that plays openly and engagingly. Its multiple inputs and powerful sound can emphasize that music is taken seriously.

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Improved stereo sound compared to the original Move, due to the addition of dual tweeters
  • Significantly longer battery life—advertised up to 24 hours—making it suitable for extended use indoors and outdoors
  • Designed with portability in mind, featuring a built-in handle for easy carrying and an IP56 rating for dust and water resistance
  • The speaker benefits from the Auto Trueplay feature, which automatically optimizes the sound to the unique acoustics of your space, delivering a balanced audio experience
  • Versatile connectivity options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay 2, and can even stream Bluetooth audio to other Sonos speakers

Product Considerations

  • Considered hefty and not as easily portable as smaller options like the Sonos Roam
  • Google Assistant is no longer supported, which may be a drawback for users heavily invested in the Google ecosystem
  • It cannot be used as a speakerphone for calls
  • Despite being a stereo speaker, channel separation isn't always very distinct, and it can sound more like an expansive mono speaker
  • An adapter is needed for a line-in connection, and a carrying case are sold separately, which increases the overall cost

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs Sonos Move: The Move 2 offers stereo playback—as opposed to mono—longer battery life, and more connectivity options
  • Vs Sonos Roam: The Move 2 sounds better and gets louder, but the Roam is smaller and lighter
  • Vs Sonos Era 300: The Era 300 has Dolby Atmos support, but is not portable or water-resistant like the Move 2
  • Vs Sonos Era 100: The Move 2 can be taken on the go unlike the Era 100 and is rated for dust and water resistance
  • Vs Bose SoundLink Max: The Sonos Move 2 sounds a bit more balanced out of the box, and its battery can even be replaced down the line, while the Bose has a longer-lasting battery and doesn't require an adapter to connect to analog line-in sources, but it can't connect to Wi-Fi

Takeaway: The Sonos Move 2 is a versatile and improved portable speaker, offering great sound and battery life for both indoor and outdoor use, and its integration with the Sonos ecosystem makes it an easy choice for existing Sonos users.

Sonos pioneered multi-room wireless audio with their proprietary SonosNet mesh network, which ensures synchronized streaming across multiple speakers without relying on traditional Wi-Fi. Their products feature Trueplay technology that automatically tunes speakers to room acoustics, while supporting multiple voice assistants and streaming services across their platform-agnostic ecosystem.
