What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

Brand highlights

Taking a step back to look at reviewers' thoughts of the brand's entire lineup—not just this product—what stands out most is the following:

  • Dynavector cartridges, especially the DRT series, incorporate a unique Alnico magnet design featuring multiple magnets and a magnetic flux damper system, contributing to stable magnetic flux and reduced distortion.
  • The brand's Karat series are known for their short, solid gemstone cantilevers (historically ruby or diamond), a distinct design choice aimed at increased rigidity and reduced resonance.
  • Dynavector offers specific high-output moving coil cartridges, like the 10X5 models, engineered to be compatible with moving magnet phono stages, simplifying system matching for some users.
  • Their cartridges benefit from the company's proprietary "softened magnetism" technology, which employs highly permeable materials to minimize magnetic flux fluctuations, yielding an improved signal-to-noise ratio and transient response.

10X5 MkII LOW

  • Position: An entry-level low output moving coil cartridge known for its long-standing popularity.
  • Description: Features a robust design with an aluminum cantilever and magnetic flux damper that delivers smooth treble response. Compared to the more advanced flagship models like the XV-1T or premium offerings such as the KARAT 17DX, its simpler structure and 0.5 mV output make it ideal for small rooms and budget-minded setups without demanding extra functionalities.

XX-2 MkII

  • Position: A mid-range low output cartridge that emphasizes improved flux damping and stable alnico magnet performance.
  • Description: Combines a solid boron cantilever with PCOCC copper coil technology to yield deeper bass and clearer treble than entry-level models. When compared to the 10X5 MkII LOW, its advanced design offers noticeable sonic improvement, yet it remains less sophisticated than the flagship XV-1T and the diamond-enhanced KARAT 17DX.

TE KAITORA RUA

Reviews

The MK II upgrade to our globally best-selling Hana S series cartridges enhances their musical performance and value. Master cartridge designer Masao Okada-san implements a new tapered Aluminum cantilever with increased rigidity, resulting in a remarkable improvement in transferring groove modulation from the vinyl record to the cartridge generator. The S Series MK II cartridges feature higher specified parts, advanced materials, and unique technical processes from Hana's higher-priced elite cartridge models, furthering the Hana "brilliant and gorgeous" sound.

Hana S Series MK II cartridges use a new tapered aluminum cantilever with higher rigidity and effective mass reduction at the stylus tip. This results in greater clarity and increased music transfer from vinyl records to cartridge generator. Critical parts, including the Yoke, Pole-pieces, and gold Terminal pins, have been cryogenically treated for a more natural sound.

The improved, non-resonant body shape, modeled after the Hana M Series, is damped with a matte Soft Feel Black elastomeric resin paint and features a brass cap with threaded cartridge mounting fittings. The heavier MK II cartridges offer better coupling and expanded compatibility with a wider range of tonearms, improving bass and dynamics.

The SL MK II generator, as found in the Umami Blue and ML, incorporates an Alnico magnet and cross-coil using high-purity 30-micron copper wire with an 8Ω impedance. This improves signal-to-noise, reduces moving mass for higher resolution and trackability, and optimizes performance for a broader range of phono stages.

Hana is a hifi brand known for its hand-assembled turntable cartridges that undergo cryogenic treatment of internal parts, a unique process that alters the metal's molecular structure to improve sound quality. Their cartridges, particularly the Umami series with its Alnico magnets and the more affordable EL model, deliver exceptional sound quality through precise craftsmanship and specialized features like MicroLine styli that extract more detail from vinyl grooves.

Our Summary

No items found.

Product Strengths

  • A Neodymium N55 magnet is used, the world's most powerful commercially available magnet, potentially providing more power and lower overall mass
  • A noticeable signature style of sounding spacious and open is delivered, bringing a sense of air usually associated with moving coil cartridges
  • Impressive instrument separation with a much wider soundstage
  • An optimized pole gap provides superior linearity and cross talk characteristics, which provides a far wider soundstage than the previous models
  • The three-point mount system simplifies alignment, particularly for Rega turntable owners and ensures perfect alignment when used with Rega tonearms

Product Considerations

  • The counterweight side of things was a little trickier than some other models because there's no traditional kind of dial and numbers on the counterweight
  • The connection pins on the back are smaller than those on the Carbon, so the delicate tags had to be carefully squeezed so that they made a tight fit on the new cartridge
  • It is a little reserved in the mid-range, which some listeners may seek out, while others maybe not so much
  • Holes do not have brass inserts for the bolts to screw into, but a thread is cut into the body; given that the body is plastic, concern that tightening with the Rega torque driver might strip the thread

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • Vs Ortofon 2M Red: Impressive instrument separation with a much wider soundstage
  • Vs Rega Carbon: It is open and extended in the treble and superbly timed for its asking price, which really makes the Carbon sound course and dull in the high frequencies

Takeaway: The Nd3 is a step up from entry-level cartridges, providing a noticeable improvement in sound quality, like greater detail and better instrument separation, and it brings welcome sound characteristics and sophistication at an affordable price. The Nd3 is well-suited for those looking for a more open and dynamic listening experience.
