What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

Bacillus Tilia

  • Positioning: A wooden desktop amplifier aimed at buyers seeking affordable style and reliable performance.
  • Description: Offers a hand-carved, aged wooden chassis with top-grade input capacitors and quality op-amps that deliver a silky neutral tone with a slightly warm character. Compared to models like Perfidus or Bacillus II Plus, its design focuses on aesthetic heritage and versatility for small rooms at a budget-friendly price while still meeting basic connectivity needs.

Perfidus

  • Positioning: A compact class-A amplifier designed for users who need detailed and balanced performance in a small chassis.
  • Description: Delivers a flat frequency response with precise detail reproduction thanks to its streamlined design and quality components such as a blue velvet Alps potentiometer. In contrast to products like Bacillus Tilia or Bacillus II Plus, its compact build prioritizes clarity over raw power.

Bacillus II Plus

  • Positioning: A dual-mono amplifier that builds on earlier models to offer enhanced clarity and speed for mid-range applications.
  • Description: Features a triple-reinforced power supply and fully balanced design to provide fast, detailed performance with flexible input/output options. Compared to the lower-priced Bacillus Tilia and Perfidus, it offers an intermediate step up in build quality and power.

Deimos

  • Positioning: A premium dual-mono amplifier crafted for serious listeners requiring balanced sound and high dynamic performance.
  • Description: Incorporates digital volume control, a sleek aluminum chassis, and silver-plated wiring to ensure a natural and wide sound while maintaining precise detail. Relative to the entry-level models like Bacillus II Plus and Perfidus, it delivers a higher level of build quality and performance for larger setups.

Scylla

  • Positioning: A high-end balanced class-A amplifier engineered for an expansive and immersive listening experience with premium headphones.
  • Description: Uses a dual-mono fully balanced design with an upgraded power supply and advanced capacitor stabilization to ensure a relaxed yet expansive soundstage. Compared to the other products in the lineup, it targets users who demand top-tier performance.

Musical Fidelity
MX-HPA

Reviews

The MX-HPA’s technical performance is stunning. Typically, distortion from 20 Hz to 40 kHz is less than 0.005%. Signal-to-noise ratio is better than 120dB (‘A’ weighted). Frequency response is ruler flat from 10 Hz to 20 kHz (-0.1dB). The MX-HPA is capable of a short-term peak of 10 watts (for one cycle) and has two gain positions: 18dB (8X) and 24dB (15X). Inputs are either balanced or single-ended. The MX-HPA will automatically convert single-ended inputs to balanced. The MX-HPA is genuinely fully balanced from beginning to end.

Musical Fidelity is known for its unique amplifier designs, particularly the A1 integrated amplifier that uses its top plate as a heatsink and features a distinctive current-mode phono stage. The brand stands out for its innovative dual-monoblock approach in integrated amplifiers, where separate power transformers and dedicated power supplies are housed in a single chassis, as seen in their M8xi and M6i models that deliver exceptional power output.

Product Strengths

  • Exceptional build quality with an elegant, minimalist aesthetic
  • Fully balanced design
  • Exceptional signal-to-noise ratio (>120dB 'A' weighted)
  • Versatile because it automatically converts single-ended inputs to balanced signals
  • Dual gain settings for versatility with virtually any headphone impedance

Product Considerations

  • May be overkill for entry-level headphones
  • The twin-XLR alternative is not the only means of balanced connection

Takeaway: The Musical Fidelity MX HPA is a remarkable piece of equipment that represents a significant achievement in balanced amplification design. It delivers a listening experience that is hard to surpass with technical excellence and practical versatility.

Fully balanced design, 4 ultra-low distortion precision linear feedback circuit (PLFC)! The distortion is as low as 0.00006%, and the SNR is as low as 133dB! A total of 99 low-noise op-amps are used in a parallel design. High output power, 16 ohm output power up to 12W, 32 ohms up to 6W; The specially designed volume potentiometer greatly reduces channel deviation; 3 gears gain control, low gain is specially optimized for IEM; Pre-out function, can be used as Hi-End pre-amp; Classic retro toggle switch operation; Ultra-compact design, very suitable for desktop headphone system; High-precision low-temperature drift resistance, performance is not affected by temperature; High-quality relay and non-impact sound design; 20Hz to 100KHz(-0.5dB) frequency response; The headphone amplifier has comprehensive protections such as DC, overvoltage, and overload protection; Built-in high-efficiency and low-noise power system.

SMSL, a Shenzhen-based hifi brand, stands out for its use of advanced chipsets like Infineon's MERUS and ES9039Q2M, which have been objectively verified to deliver exceptionally low noise and distortion levels. The brand has earned acclaim from value-conscious audiophiles.

Product Strengths

  • Original and stylish design
  • High power output, up to 12 watts
  • Overload protection
  • The XLR, RCA input switch, the headphone amplifier or preamplifier switch, and the low, mid, and high gain switches are located on the back of the unit, potentially making them difficult to access

Product Considerations

  • The unit uses 99 low-noise op-amps in parallel, which is considered excessive and potentially detrimental to sound quality
  • The unit uses the cheapest balanced potentiometer
  • The unit uses a couple of switching power supplies
  • The total harmonic distortion is only at its super magical level with a very high wattage

Takeaway: The VMV amp has high power and overload protection that might work to drive headphones. It could be a great amp for someone willing to try it out.
