What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

The Aristaeus design dates back over a decade, to an extremely limited edition amplifier timed to coincide with a re-release of the Sennheiser Orpheus (HE90) electrostatic headphone. Inspired by the original Orpheus amplifier, the current Aristaeus features a number of improvements in parts and build quality, and, as always, the exemplary fit and finish of all HeadAmp products. The all-tube circuit design provides a warm, rich sound to match the luxurious burled maple inlays on the amplifier's front panel. Every Aristaeus is tested extensively throughout the build process, as well as before, and after an extensive burn-in process to ensure the best possible performance.

Brand highlights

Taking a step back to look at reviewers' thoughts of the brand's entire lineup—not just this product—what stands out most is the following:

GS-X mini:

  • Positioning: A compact and budget-friendly amplifier designed for desktop use and portability.
  • Description: Offers a small form factor with essential balanced and unbalanced outputs for everyday listening needs. Compared with larger models like the GS-X Mk2 or CFA3, its performance is tuned for moderate power demands and simplified functionality suited for limited space.

GS-X mk2:

  • Positioning: A high-performance amplifier that delivers clear, transparent sound for dynamic and planar magnetic headphones.
  • Description: Features low-noise circuitry, adaptable gain options, and multiple I/O choices to provide a premium and versatile audio experience. In contrast to the compact GS-X mini and the tube-driven tone of the Aristaeus, it is engineered for users who demand rigorous, analytical sound reproduction with robust power handling.

CFA3:

  • Positioning: A flagship planar and dynamic amplifier built with modern surface-mount designs for desktop applications.
  • Description: Uses new-old-stock transistors, innovative thermal regulation, and a custom stepped volume control for refined performance in a small footprint. Compared with the GS-X series and tube-based designs like the Aristaeus, it offers advanced features and precision aimed at driving high-end headphones with enhanced detail and control.

Aristaeus:

  • Positioning: An electrostatic amplifier with an all-tube circuit design that delivers a warm, rich, and smooth sound signature.
  • Description: Features luxurious wood inlays and tube circuitry to create a slightly laid-back and natural sound profile. When compared with the more clinical clarity of the GS-X units and the precise drive of the Blue Hawaii SE, it is ideal for users seeking vintage warmth and musicality, particularly with electrostatic headphone systems.

Blue Hawaii SE:

  • Positioning: The premium electrostatic amplifier engineered to power the toughest headphone loads with exceptional accuracy and control.
  • Description: Features dual Stax Pro-Bias outputs, high-voltage design, and precise channel matching that set it apart with industry-leading drive and clarity. Compared with the tube-inflected Aristaeus and the balanced transparency of the GS-X series, it provides the highest level of performance for users with demanding sonic goals.

Our take on the brand

HeadAmp pioneered portable hifi with their Pico series, which was among the first to combine a pocket-sized amp with a USB DAC. The brand is particularly known for their Blue Hawaii SE electrostatic headphone amplifier and GS-X series, which can drive everything from sensitive in-ear monitors to power-hungry planar magnetic headphones.

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Delivers a lovely, lush-sounding performance that is hard to dislike, described as smooth but far from lifeless, delivering high levels of detail in a cohesive and musical manner
  • Creates an astonishing space and three dimensionality to the sound, reminiscent of high-end systems
  • Features a rich, balanced, and powerful sound that is more forgiving than most rivals
  • Superbly made and engineered with solid casework
  • Largely unphased by most headphones and can drive a wide range of headphones

Product Considerations

  • Volume control operation lacks linearity, making subtle changes in level difficult
  • Really needs a balanced source and headphones to deliver its best performance
  • Has no input switching, so balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs cannot be used simultaneously
  • Lacks a remote control for volume adjustment

Takeaway: The MHA200 is a well-built headphone amplifier that delivers a refined and musical listening experience with a spacious soundstage. It is ideal for users who want a dedicated headphone amplifier and appreciate the rich sound of tubes.

Kenzie OG

/
Released
2022
Like many of our products, the Kenzie headphone amplifier evolved from our earlier designs – in this case, rave reviews about the SE-84's headphone section. The inevitable question followed; why didn't we build a dedicated headphone amp? Why indeed? After some research, we came to the conclusion that a headphone amplifier building on the much loved Darling circuit was the right choice for us.

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Unique 'tube character' enhances the sound in a positive way
  • Known for sweetness, euphony, and richness of tone
  • Enhances microdynamics, drawing attention to finer nuances of volume
  • Creates a more involved and textured soundstage
  • Is a completely neutral headphone amplifier, as long as the output impedance synergy is observed
  • Inputs and outputs are located on the back of the unit, which can be inconvenient

Product Considerations

  • Not suitable for very inefficient planar headphones like the HE6 or Audeze LCD-4
  • Not generally recommended for IEMs
  • Can be susceptible to interference from Wi-Fi signals or other electronic components
  • Depending on the headphone used, the environment, and the output being used, the unit may produce some noise floor

Takeaway: The Kenzie is a special tube amp that makes music sound sweet and detailed, improving the listening experience with many headphones, assuming the right setup is used. It's a good option for those who want to go beyond solid-state amps.
