What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

Our take on the brand

Unitra, established in 1961, was a consortium of over 60 Polish electronics manufacturers, including notable firms like Diora, Radmor, and Fonica, collectively advancing the nation's audio technology landscape. They've since been revived with a focus on modern amplifiers sporting classic aesthetics.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Dual-Mono Class A Architecture: Unlike many amplifiers that cut corners with shared power supplies or Class AB switching, our WSH-805 amplifier is a true dual-mono, fully discrete Class A design — with separate toroidal transformers for left and right channels. This preserves signal integrity, improves stereo separation, and delivers the kind of rich, analog warmth that’s becoming rare in the industry.

Bistable switches and the ability to control key functions via our patented switching system. It’s a unique combination of precision, durability, and tactile satisfaction. This is something you won’t find in most modern hi-fi equipment.

We also implement a current feedback topology, which, while more challenging to design and fine-tune, offers superior performance in terms of dynamic range, speed, and feedback response. It allows our amplifiers to handle complex signals with greater accuracy and musicality.

Finally, we’re proud of the unmistakable vintage character and appearance of our products. For us, "vintage" doesn’t just mean retro styling. It means embracing timeless design while building everything with modern technology and contemporary engineering standards. It’s a fusion of heritage and innovation, and a signature of everything we do at Unitra.

In terms of vintage products, we just released a new version of WSH-805 amp, called Classic edition. It is a tribute to the legacy of Unitra, blending the timeless elegance of natural wood and brass with the power of precision engineering. With its refined design, this special edition highlights the beauty of craftsmanship and the enduring charm of classic hi-fi.

What's your approach to customer support?

At Unitra, we take support personally. Our products are designed and hand-assembled in Poland by a close-knit team of engineers and technicians so if something goes wrong, it often ends up in the hands of the people who built it. There is great movie, made by polish YT channel, "Factories", where You can see the whole process of doing the amplifiers.

For day-to-day questions, customers can of course reach out to their dealer or distributor. But if the issue concerns something deeper or if a customer simply wants to talk directly with us, we’re always available. On our website you can find a direct contact via email [email protected] and we try to handle the issue as quickly as we can.

Our mission is to create timeless and repairable devices. We design them in a way that allows a single faulty component to be replaced, not the entire product. It’s something we’re proud of and see as a feature of the future even though, to us, it’s simply common sense and a matter of respect for quality craftsmanship.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

1. Jennifer Warnes/ Soundtrakc: The Hunter/ song: Somewhere, somebody (CD).

The track is built around a very distinctive bassline that forms a solid foundation for the entire composition.

This track is ideal for testing the depth and precision of bass reproduction. It’s also excellent for evaluating how well a system handles simultaneous vocals — their separation, balance, and harmonic interplay.

2. Daft Punk Random Access Memories Get Lucky (Vinyl)

This track is ideal for testing bass control, vocal clarity, and dynamics. The funky guitar groove and bass line reveal how well speakers handle rhythm and sound separation. Additionally, the delicate, spacious electronic elements in the background help evaluate the width of the soundstage, while the clear but subtle vocals aid in assessing midrange detail.

3.Allan Taylor Colour to the moon Colour to the moon (CD)

Great for testing vocal clarity, midrange detail, and separation of individual elements in the soundscape. This track shows how well the equipment handles intimate, acoustic recordings (separation of 2 guitars) and the natural sound of instruments.

4. Johnny Cash American IV Hurt (Vinyl)

An excellent track for testing vocal clarity and its emotional depth. Cash's voice is very expressive, which allows you to assess how the equipment reproduces details in the low and mid tones (for vocals). The delicate guitar and strings require precision in reproducing quiet, subtle sounds. Attention should be paid to the dynamics, as the song gradually gains intensity, and each addition of an instrument gives the impression of a larger sonic space.

Viking

Reviews

In a world full of options for downloading music, sound formats, compression methods, and streaming services, putting on some music can feel overwhelming. What should be easy and enjoyable, suddenly becomes complex and stressful. Playing a CD on the Viking is not. It is only joy.

Viking is a true native 16/44.1 CD player developed from the ground up for optimal performance on standard (Redbook) CDs. It is designed to deliver the most faithful sound reproduction possible by optimizing its components to deliver a high-quality output that is true to the original recording.

We have called our CD player Viking because, much like our ancient Norse forefathers, we are improving on existing technology. When the Viking era began, boats had been around for thousands of years. What the Vikings did was perfect the design. Their longboats could not only sail near the coasts but also traverse the open oceans. The improvements they made took the Vikings to new shores and even new continents. The CD technology might be old, but we believe that when perfected, it is still the best digital medium available.

At first glance Viking might seem simple, but with simplicity comes excellence. Because Viking is focused solely on playing Redbook CDs it can reach unprecedented levels of fidelity. By doing only one thing there are no trade-offs. Viking consists only of high-quality components designed specifically for the task, and that makes this CD player sound truly astounding.

Viking uses a dedicated laser and CD drive to ensure optimal reading of the data. It is also equipped with a state-of-the-art DAC that delivers high-quality digital-to-analog conversion with minimal distortion, making it possible to hear all the nuances and subtleties in the music. The Viking does not upsample or tamper with the signal in any way. Because by leaving the signal as it is on the disc, the already excellent DAC is optimized to perform at its absolute best.

The drive and the DAC are directly controlled by our unique Master clock system, ensuring perfect timing between the two. Using a quartz crystal with very low phase noise and our patented SoundEngine technology, the Hegel-designed discrete clock in the Viking reduces jitter to an absolute minimum.

The Viking CD player also features an OLED display that is specifically selected for its low noise, resulting in a clearer and more detailed sound. The analog stage in Viking is developed specifically for this model. It incorporates both our analog low pass filter and Line Driver technology, ensuring fully balanced and noise-free handling of the signal all the way to your amplifier.

One of the most notable features of the Viking CD player is its cabinet design. The sleek design of Viking matches the P30A and H30A for a modern and cohesive look. But the design choices are not only aesthetical. A very reliable slot in drive and a well-engineered and solid build means this player will last for years and years.

The Viking CD player has one pair of balanced XLR outputs, one pair of unbalanced RCA outputs, and one BNC digital true 75 Ohm output, making it easy to operate and integrate into any audio system. The player also has an auto-standby feature for greater convenience, and it comes with Hegel's solid aluminum RC8 remote that can also control all other Hegel products.

The Hegel Viking is a top-of-the-line CD player designed to deliver the most faithful sound reproduction possible. With its mechanical design, advanced digital technology, our unique Master clock system, and superb analog stage, Viking is a must-have for any audiophile who wants to experience music in its purest form. Viking is a peak-performance machine. It is designed to do one thing and one thing only: To capture every single aspect of the music you are listening to. Hegel Viking is the best CD player we have ever made.

Known for producing all-in-one integrated amplifiers, Hegel has become a favorite among hi-fi enthusiasts and dealers worldwide. Their amplifiers are particularly praised for their exceptional bass control, attributed to their high damping factor, which ensures precise management of even difficult-to-drive speakers like planar magnetics and dipoles. With competitive pricing and high performance, Hegel integrateds stand out as some of the best options available for audiophiles seeking simplicity and excellence in a single component.

Product Considerations

  • The play button is in a strange spot and can be hard to figure out, the remote buttons are small
  • Only plays standard Redbook CDs
  • Has a BNC digital output, which may not be compatible with all DACs
  • No standby button

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • The Viking does not sparkle as much on the top end as the Cambridge Audio, but moves the heart more
