What reviewers think

Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.

What are hifi reviews useful for? (1) Identifying products you should demo in person at a dealer. (2) Learning which products reviewers unanimously praise as the best they've heard (this means they probably are legitimately great). (3) Identifying a product's attributes that satisfy your idiosyncratic needs and tastes. Beyond that, we often discount what reviewers say because they heap praise on most products—and are often apprehensive about publishing strong criticism or comparisons between products. Further, they seldom have more than a few products on-hand, often relying on their memories to compare past products. Always listen for yourself.

The MODEL S is a flat speaker (15 cm deep) specially designed for the surround channels of a home cinema system. It can be wall-mounted (fixing system supplied) or flush-mounted. We recommend it for dedicated rooms of 15 to 30 m2. It is available in a single finish (black with a dark grey front) for easy integration into dark rooms… Technical specifications : The speaker features a 16.5 cm diameter bass-midrange driver and a titanium dome tweeter. Its port is naturally located at the front. Given its role as an effects loudspeaker, the MODEL S has been designed to be particularly dynamic. The driver uses a diaphragm weighing around 3 grams (particularly light for this diameter of driver), mounted on a small pleated suspension to become very reactive. The result is an output close to 94 dB. It is accompanied by a metal dome tweeter (titanium), also very rigid, to ensure high frequencies right to the end of the audible range.

Brand highlights

Taking a step back to look at reviewers' thoughts of the brand's entire lineup—not just this product—what stands out most is the following:

  • Davis Acoustics leverages in-house driver design and manufacturing, a legacy dating back to 1986, to offer unique driver combinations like Kevlar mids and carbon fiber woofers, tailored for balanced sound.
  • They are known for meticulous attention to cabinet design, often employing features like reinforced MDF, internal bracing, rounded edges, and strategically placed vents to minimize unwanted resonances and optimize acoustic performance.
  • A key element of the Davis Acoustics sound signature is a focus on delivering a natural and detailed midrange, frequently utilizing Kevlar drivers to achieve richness, texture, and clarity in vocal and instrumental reproduction.

Olympia One Master 35

  • Positioning: Entry-level floorstanding speaker reissued for accessible performance in smaller spaces.
  • Description: Offers a compact two-driver design with moderate power and simplified connectivity, making it a practical choice for smaller rooms and budget-oriented systems. Compared to the more robust Ariane 9 and other premium models, it provides basic functionality without advanced low-end impact, ideal for users with modest budget and space needs.

Ariane 9

  • Positioning: Mid-range floorstanding speaker aimed at larger listening rooms with balanced sound.
  • Description: Features a four-driver configuration that enhances bass descent and refines high frequencies with a new tweeter, delivering a wide and realistic sound scene. Compared to the entry-level Olympia One Master 35, it offers improved dynamics, yet remains less complex than the Krypton 10 and Stellar.

Courbet N°8

  • Positioning: Mid-to-high range three-way speaker designed for large rooms needing defined and musical sound reproduction.
  • Description: Integrates a fabric dome tweeter, a midrange taken from a higher model, and a fast carbon woofer to achieve an extended bandwidth and clarity. In contrast with the simpler Ariane 9 and Olympia One Master 35, its advanced design serves users with higher technical expectations while still being more approachable than the top-tier Krypton 10 and Stellar.

Krypton 10

  • Positioning: High-end speaker engineered for large living spaces with a focus on powerful and authoritative bass.
  • Description: Uses dual 21 cm bass drivers in parallel with a laminar port to deliver strong low-end performance while preserving detailed midrange and treble. Compared to the mid-range Ariane 9 and Courbet N°8, it targets users seeking enhanced bass and robust sound performance, though it sits just below the flagship level of the Stellar series.

Stellar

  • Positioning: Flagship floorstanding speaker crafted for the most demanding audio systems in expansive environments.
  • Description: Uses a refined three-driver setup with premium materials for membranes, motors, and cabling to ensure precise detail and an expansive soundstage. While it outclasses the advanced features of the Krypton 10 and is pricier than the Ariane 9, Courbet N°8, and Olympia One Master 35, it represents the pinnacle of the lineup's technological capabilities.

Our take on the brand

Davis Acoustics pioneered the use of materials like Kevlar, carbon, and glass fiber in speaker unit production, and their focus remains on driver technology over box design as seen in their MV One model with its unique wideband driver. Their speakers use proprietary drivers with different cable types for each driver to optimize response, setting them apart from other French brands by delivering natural sound without the harshness often associated with high-frequency reproduction.

M&K Sound
IC95

Reviews

The new compact IC95 integrated loudspeaker system is based on the well proven proprietary 6,5-inch mid-woofer, also used in Miller & Kreisel studio monitor system MPS1620P and in-wall system IW95. The mid-woofer in IC95 is a long time accepted key component in the Miller & Kreisel signature sound history, now appearing as the key component for the smallest and most compact format ever – to provide the real Miller & Kreisel sound. IC95 present a new developed axial mounted 1” soft fabric dome tweeter, designed with swivel function to angle and optimize the on-axis response to the listening positions.

M&K Sound invented the world's first subwoofer in 1973 and is widely used in Hollywood studios for mixing and mastering film soundtracks. Their push-pull subwoofer design cancels out harmonic distortion, and their speakers deliver professional studio monitor neutrality, making them a top choice for high-end audio production.

Product Strengths

  • The IC95 is built with high-quality materials, including rigid push-button speaker terminals
  • Sound field height, envelopment, and directionality are improved
  • Speaker localization tends to disappear in the sound field

Product Considerations

  • The cutout template included is slightly larger than the Revel c263, which may require some ceiling modification

Comparisons (according to reviewers)

  • The IC95 improves sound field height, envelopment, and directionality over the Revel c263

Takeaway: The MK Sound IC95 is a phenomenal in-ceiling speaker that will give a lot for the money and is especially good as Atmos speakers. The improvements in sound quality are substantial and make it a worthwhile upgrade.

Revel is a hifi speaker brand that uses beryllium tweeters and Deep Ceramic Composite cones, combined with Harman's extensive acoustic research, to achieve exceptional sound quality.
Expand Details

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Fairly neutral sound
  • Good horizontal response, about plus or minus 45 to 60 degrees

Product Considerations

  • Midrange can sound slightly thin at times
  • Bass region is bumped up about 1 to 2dB, which may be why the midrange sounds thin
  • Compression does some weird things at higher volumes, particularly with the tweeter
  • Compression increases below about 80 Hz

Takeaway: The Revel W553L is a fairly neutral sounding in-wall speaker, and could be a good choice on a moderate budget. For side surround speakers, this could be a great choice because of its good horizontal response.

Build a completely stealth home theater system and use the floor space you save to add more chairs for those friends you invite some friends over.

Polk’s been a major player in the audio world since the ’70s, though they don’t always get the same attention from hi-fi reviewers as some other brands. But they know their niche—mass-market, entry-level products that perform way better than you’d expect for the price. Their R200 model, for example, gets called one of the best under $1,000. If you’re looking for solid performance without spending a fortune, Polk’s stuff is hard to beat.
Expand Details

Our Summary

Product Strengths

  • Good clarity in home theater and video game applications
  • Punchy sound for in-wall speakers, especially in video games
  • Good separation from left and right channels in video games

Product Considerations

  • The 100-watt max can be limiting, especially for whole-house music listening
  • Music performance is not as good, with clarity and separation being negatively impacted
  • The template for installation might be a millimeter smaller than the actual opening

Takeaway: The RC85I speakers are great for home theaters and shine in video games, providing clear and punchy sound and are an affordable solution for surround sound. Due to their limitations, they are best used as rear speakers for surround sound.
