What reviewers think
Bloggers and YouTubers have tried this product—so we've summarized their strongest opinions below. Links to full reviews follow.
Product Strengths
- Excellent sound features and plays music in a balanced way regardless of the piece's frequency distribution
- Produces a cool, homogenous, and natural treble up to respectable highs, making music sound exceptionally right and sensible
- Has a deep and boundless sound stage, not very sensitive to directing it toward the listening spot
- The unit in the Z1 is a virtual point source, and sounds like it too—seamlessly matched with the woofer
Product Considerations
- Bass performance can be described as undemonstrative or controlled
- Might be too subtle sounding for studio purposes, not responding to studio professionals' typical demands concerning the "grayness" of the tone and misunderstood brightness
- The sound might be perceived as 'dry' because it only includes what is on the record, with nothing added to it
Takeaway: The Manger Z1 is a well-built compact speaker with a unique sound that makes music sound right. It is not for beginners, but it provides a great listening experience, especially for classical vocal music.

Our take on the brand

Our interview with the brand
What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?
The Manger driver is a different technical principle.
It's quite a full-range driver, and the technical principle it uses is a so-called bending wave driver. You’ve probably read that my father invented this driver. He figured out that a conventional driver always has its own sound or footprint. By measuring, he saw that a classical driver always stores energy due to its construction. It behaves like a mass-spring system —so it's never quite as fast as the electronic signal. It introduces a kind of delay through mechanical energy storage. So, by the time the next change in the music or sound happens, the driver is still moving in another direction. Avoiding this transient behavior of the conventional driver —this energy storage—was the intention. This led to our core technology, the Manger sound transducer with its bending wave principle, which doesn’t store energy and covers a range from 360 Hz up to 45 kHz. If you read reviews, the conclusion is always the same: it’s very neutral and very natural.
Philosophy of neutrality and natural reproduction.
I always say the Manger is like food without additives. People know from eating or restaurants what “no additives” means—so they have a comparison. If you don’t have experience with natural sound—which means you’re not used to going to concerts with natural instruments—you have no reference. And if you compare our loudspeakers with other loudspeakers, they all sound different, but you don’t know which one is “right” and for sure it is also a matter of taste. There is something objective in the sound reproduction —how you can recognize things like imaging and the character of instruments, these are all so-called transients and the better a loudspeaker can reproduce this the more natural and lifelike the sound reproduction is perceived. But if you have a technical artifact in between—and mainly it’s the loudspeaker—then it’s not so direct. It is also less relaxing but fatiguing.
What's your approach to customer support?
The best situation is always when the customer has a good relationship to the dealer. Sometimes, the customer invests so much time and gathers so much information that—depending on the dealer’s capabilities—the dealer may not know how to help. In such cases, the customer typically contacts the distributor. And if they’re still not satisfied, they can contact the manufacturer directly. I am always willing to answer any questions. This has to do with our philosophy, and also with the fact that we are not a big company. So everything is like a small restaurant: you talk directly to the cook. People feel good when their questions are answered seriously and competently.
What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?
- Birds — Dominique Fils-Aimé | Album: Nameless | Genre: Blues / Jazz / Soul
- October — Göteborgs Kammerkör | Album: Viska du Vind | Genre: Folk / World
- Malletoba Spank — Duke Ellington | Album: Ellington Jazz Party | Genre: Jazz
- Celestial Echo — Malia & Boris Blank | Album: Convergence | Genre: Pop

What other products pair best with yours?
In my demonstrations and shows, I mainly pair with SPL (Sound Performance Lab). I really love this combination. For me, it’s always important to show the result to people—when everything is in balance, including the cost of the electronics and the cables. The products from SPL sound great. I also know that Accuphase fits very well, and of course, it's also a matter of taste. I have customers who pair with tube amplifiers as well.

Our take on the brand
When Crystal Cable launched the original, glass cabinet Arabesque in 2009, the audio world was stunned by the performance of a speaker that sounded as clean and clear as it looked. The Arabesque shape of this groundbreaking loudspeaker was developed to prevent resonance and standing waves and to eliminate parallel walls and common dimensions, resulting in natural resonant decay without resorting to damping materials. This unique design and technology was then further perfected in the following Arabesque speaker models: the Arabesque Mini, the Arabesque III and the Minissimo.
Now, the new Minissimo Forte takes things to an even higher level. Crystal Cable's goal was to further refine the performance possible from a standmount loudspeaker, while maintaining its predecessor's beauty and compactness. An advanced new passive-active crossover has been added, alongside special fully balanced filter technology. Our unique MAD™ (Multiple Absorption and Dispersion) system and the new stable and decoupled stand further reduce cavity resonances, and improve sound quality. Together, this series of engineering improvements delivers superb sonic performance.
Development
With so much of the design right first time, the original Minissimo stand mount loudspeaker was a hard act to follow. So our engineers thoroughly analyzed the behavior of the loudspeaker using tools like COMSOL™ Multiphysics computer aided design facilities and our custom-made vibration measurement system. The decision was then taken to focus in on three specific areas where further improvements could be achieved, namely the speaker cabinet, stand assembly and crossover.
Developing the cabinet
One key design aim was to take the Minissimo's cabinet and support stand out of the equation, making them as acoustically inert as possible. This was done by identifying and then eliminating all vibration paths inside the speaker, by the fitment of a special layer of internal resonance-reducing material. This is unique in the field of loudspeaker design, and has further lowered cabinet noise as well as preventing extraneous vibrations between cabinet and stand.
Developing the crossover
For the 'passive-active' crossover design, our engineers benefited greatly from the spectacular results achieved while designing the Symphony loudspeaker of sister-brand Siltech, with which Crystal Cable shares all resources and production facilities. Most loudspeakers employ a passive separation filter using coils to provide the drivers with the correct signal, but this can cause non-linearity and dynamic compression of the signal. The passive-active filter used in Minissimo Forte eliminates these limitations by using frequency dependent components, which allows for much greater control of the sound, higher resolution of details in the music, and increases the dynamic range.
Our summary
Product Strengths
- The Minissimo Forte creates a palpably dimensional and believable representation of musical sounds, offering the most believable representation of a musical sound through a stereo system
- It communicates the dynamic life of music exceptionally well at lower playback levels
- Incredible resolution and coloration-free tonality
- The speakers play organically with excellent timbre, detail, and incredible soundstage
Product Considerations
- The owner's manual lacks detailed setup instructions regarding channel configuration
- Positioning the right and left speakers with the 'fat' part of the apostrophe on the outside results in a reduction in the seamlessness of the soundstage
Comparisons (according to reviewers)
- Compared to Harbeth, the Crystal Cable speakers possessed a skill—allowing even better insight into the recording
- Compared to BBC LS3/5a loudspeakers, the Minissimo Forte goes a step, or two, further in transparency
Takeaway: The Crystal Cable Minissimo Forte loudspeaker is excellent for audiophiles who want a high level of realism. These speakers are especially good in small and medium spaces with high-end electronics.
