What's unique about the brand

Aperion Audio is an American speaker maker that has sold direct to customers online since 1998. Founder Win Jeanfreau started the company in Portland, Oregon, after deciding to build his own speakers, and it is now based in Wilsonville. The Verus and Novus series cover towers, center channels and surrounds. The Grandis series is its hifi line, and the Theatrus series covers in-wall, on-wall and in-ceiling speakers. Its dual-firing AMT super tweeters are sold on their own, so owners can extend the treble of speakers they already have.

Brand overview

Tom L. of AV Nirvana kept switching Aperion's DST super tweeter on and off through his review. With it running, the synth lines on an electronic record floated above his speakers, and with it off they "came back to earth." A super tweeter is a small extra speaker you place on top of the ones you already own to fill in the very top of the treble. It wires into the main speaker's terminals and needs no extra amplifier. Aperion's version uses a folded ribbon that squeezes air in and out like a bellows, and it plays both forward and backward into the room. Tom notes that very little of the music itself lives that high up, but the overtones there carry "presence, space, and air." Aperion's founder says the company designs for music first, since film soundtracks ask less of a speaker. Aperion suits listeners who like to tune a system by ear and want a lot of speaker for an easy setup.

If you want a full Aperion system, start with the Verus III Concert V8T, the flagship tower. Mike Perez of StereoNET advises an amplifier with good current drive, but Jim Milton of Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity drove it with Aperion's own E2 amp and found it did not need a lot of power. Give the towers space. Milton set them about 7.5 feet apart and advises against a small room. Jumpers on the back let you nudge the midrange and treble up or down, and foam plugs in the ports tame the bass if your room is boomy. If you already love your speakers, try the DST instead. Tom settled on a 12 kHz crossover with the level turned down a little, and John Hughes of Positive Feedback set his higher to suit speakers whose treble stops early. If your speakers are very efficient, pick the larger HST, which is built to keep up with them.

Aperion began with a dead boombox. In 1998 Win Jeanfreau and his wife set out to replace theirs with a real stereo, and he found speakers displayed in showrooms that "didn't begin to resemble my family room." He had built speakers in high school, knew what the parts cost, and decided to build his own. Weeks later a man in Mexico, discussing Peruvian hardwood with him, asked whether he would make a business of it, and Jeanfreau said yes. The first speaker, the 502D, was sold as Edge Audio, built in Ensenada, Mexico from solid capirona wood. The company became Aperion in 2001 and sold online from the start, when the internet was young. Jim Milton found it that year while shopping for his first serious speakers. The Verus Grand Tower appeared at the 2010 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, and Ryan Waniata of Digital Trends heard its successor as "lush" and "organic." The super tweeters followed in 2012, and in 2021 Mike Perez gave the V8T a StereoNET Applause Award.
