What's unique about the brand

Diptyque Audio is a French maker of flat-panel loudspeakers, designed and built in France. The name comes from the diptych, a work of art in two parts, and the speakers are designed to look at home in fine architecture. They use isodynamic planar magnetic panels, with bass-midrange cells paired with a tall ribbon tweeter. The DP 140 Mk II, with two bass-midrange cells and a 55 cm ribbon tweeter, is aimed at larger rooms. The DP 115 and DP 160 Mk II are also in the range.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

We’re about planar magnetic speakers—with actual bass. Many others of this type don't have bass. Instead of just having magnets on one plane on either side of the voice coil, we put them front and back. We’re a cross between a Magnepan and a Martin Logan insofar as this driver topology inspiration. This gives you more x-max so you can get more output, which means better bass response.

Tradeoffs: More expensive, and possibly still not as bassy as the biggest EDM speakers can pull off. But it’s magical for everything else.

Lineup comparison

We think it's helpful to understand how their products compare. To learn more about each, scroll to the section above to click through to individual product pages.

Every Diptyque Audio model is a flat-panel speaker with isodynamic planar magnetic cells and a ribbon tweeter, built in France. The DP 85 has a 1320 cm² mid-bass cell and a 30 cm tweeter, and the DP 115 steps up to 1980 cm² and a 45 cm tweeter. The DP 140 Mk II uses two cells totaling 2420 cm² with a 55 cm tweeter, and the DP 160 Mk II raises that to 3380 cm². The Reference Mk2 is a 3.5 way design.

Start here. The DP 85 is the smallest flat speaker in the range, so it fits a first system in a small room.

Sweet spot. The DP 115 suits a listener who wants the two way panel recipe in the lower price bracket, and a reviewer praises its clarity and looks.

All in. The Reference Mk2 is for a listener with a dedicated large room who wants the most expensive and most powerful model in the range.

About the brand

Steinway Lyngdorf is a Danish maker of complete sound systems, developed with the piano maker Steinway & Sons on a promise to reproduce a Steinway grand piano as faithfully as possible. Fully digital amplification drives the speakers, and RoomPerfect room correction maps the room in 3D and adapts the sound to it while keeping each speaker's own character. The Model D loudspeaker system launched the collaboration in 2007, and the Model B is a four-way open-dipole active speaker. The LS Concert pairs its speakers with boundary woofers for larger cinema and music rooms.

About the brand

Spatial Europe is a German maker of open baffle loudspeakers, hand-assembled in Ingolstadt in Bavaria. Most parts, including the baffles and the milled aluminum pieces, are made by local craftsmen, and the designs are upgradable. The packaging is plastic-free, with transport covers sewn from unbleached cotton and reusable nylon straps. The MC series is the main line, with numbered models such as the MC Series No 3, and suits small and medium rooms. The PURE series follows the idea of leaving things out, and the Arthouse Edition pairs the speakers with art.

About the brand

PureAudioProject makes open-baffle speakers, which have no box around the drivers. The speakers are modular, so owners choose the model and center driver, experiment with wiring and crossover parts, and can scale up from one model to another later. They arrive flat-packed, and assembly needs no technical background. The Line15 models use 15-inch woofers and are high-efficiency designs, and the Line10 models use 10-inch woofers. The Trio10 HeilAMT, with its Heil AMT driver, suits small and medium rooms, and the Quintet15 is built for large ones.

About the brand

Clarisys Audio is a Swiss maker of ribbon loudspeakers. Its speakers use a double-sided ribbon driver held in a metal exoskeleton frame, and neodymium magnets raise their sensitivity, which makes them a natural match for tube amplifiers. The company supports its owners with community forums, a parts library and a certified pre-owned marketplace on its website. The Minuet is on our All Planar and Electrostatic Speakers list, and Clarisys also makes the Auditorium.

About the brand

Wolf von Langa is a German speaker maker in Neunkirchen am Brand, named for its designer. Most of its speakers use field-coil drivers that the company develops and builds itself. The AUDIO FRAME series has no enclosures, and another model floats a full-range driver so its energy stays out of an acoustic labyrinth cabinet. Each speaker is made by hand in Germany and goes through a multi-day test before delivery. The WVL 12639 SON is a compact field-coil model for living rooms where space is limited.

About the brand

Magnepan is an American speaker maker founded in 1969 by Jim Winey, the inventor of the Magneplanar. In place of a cone and box, a thin aluminum strip attached by hand to Mylar film drives the whole surface of the film, so the panel radiates front and back as a line source. The 3.7i and 20.7 add a true ribbon tweeter, and every pair is made in Minnesota. The panels act like a simple resistor, a natural match for amplifiers comfortable with four ohms, and the LRS+ heads our All Planar and Electrostatic Speakers list.
