What's unique about the brand
Auris Audio is a Serbian maker of tube amplifiers and turntables, with every product made in its own factory in Serbia. Its tube headphone amplifiers are built around 300B and KT88 tubes, and one reviewer singles out the 300B model's power to drive a wide range of high-end headphones. The Analog line covers turntables, and the 2 Channel line covers amplifiers for loudspeakers. The company designs its products to look distinctive, with styling that mixes vintage and modern.
Brand overview
Milomir Trosic, who founded Auris Audio, owns a big collection of headphones, a Beyerdynamic T1 among them, and some of them are hard to drive. He told Jay of Jay's iyagi that headphones like the T1 are why his amps can be set for almost any load. Most tube amps pass the music through an output transformer, a pair of coils that turns the tube's high voltage into the current a headphone or speaker needs, and each transformer works best with one kind of load. So Auris gives its transformers several settings and a knob to choose between them. Simone Ragionieri of 6moons reports that Trosic considers this "the only way to insure full power transfer regardless of load impedance." Auris builds its own transformers, power supplies and circuit boards in its factory in Serbia. Marcus of Headfonics calls the Headonia's sound "closer to realistic rather than romanticized," and Trosic told Ragionieri he takes it as a compliment when listeners say it sounds like transistors. Auris suits listeners who want tube tone with real drive.
For headphones, Auris makes the Nirvana and the flagship Headonia 300B. The Nirvana uses EL34 output tubes, and Trosic told Jay he chose them because so much music was recorded through EL34s. He named it after an employee who tested the first one and called its sound Nirvana. With the Headonia, Marcus suggests setting the impedance knob close to your headphone's rating and then experimenting, and he heard the amp at its best with fast, revealing headphones like the HiFiMAN Susvara Unveiled. The amp drops the volume to zero whenever you change the gain, which Ragionieri calls a smart move to protect ears and headphones. For speakers, the Fortissimo integrated has 100 watts per channel from KT120 tubes, and John Richardson of Part-Time Audiophile drove ATC SCM100 monitors with it and called the bass "iron-fisted, yet tonally organic." For vinyl, John Hoffman of Positive Feedback reviewed the Bayadere 3, said to be the sweet spot of the turntable range. It ships without a mat or tonearm cable so you can choose your own.
Trosic's path ran from DJing in his youth to recording studios and playing electric bass, Ragionieri writes, and HiFi.fan says he had been developing amplifiers for three decades before he founded Auris in 2013. Asked by Ragionieri why a country as small as Serbia turns out so much good hifi, Trosic credited its schooling in electronics and a generation of music lovers who built their own gear because imports were hard to get. The Russian retailer Dr.Head writes that the first Auris product was the Forte 150, a mono amp on KT150 tubes, shown at the High End show in Munich in 2013. Trosic introduced himself to Lieven of Headfonia in the beer garden at High End to ask for a review. The headphone amps followed in 2017 with the HA-2SE, Dr.Head says, and the Headonia 300B marked the company's 10th anniversary.
