What's unique about the brand

Jolida is a tube amplifier brand whose range mixes pure tube integrated amplifiers with hybrid models that pair a tube preamplifier stage with solid-state power. The tube designs use power tubes such as the 6L6GC, EL34, KT88 and KT90. Some models add Bluetooth, so a phone can play straight through the amplifier. One power amplifier sets its own tube bias automatically and can be bridged into a higher-power mono amplifier. The flagship uses a current-mode circuit designed to widen bandwidth and lower distortion.

Brand overview

Michael Allen, then Jolida's president, once told John Potis of SoundStage! that the company's design philosophy was "Don't scare the straights," and he was only half joking. He meant buyers who want something better than a mass-market receiver and then want to get on with the music. Jolida built tube amplifiers for them, simple integrateds that do the job without fuss. The appeal of tubes, as Potis explains it, is in how they behave when pushed. When a tube amp runs out of power it rounds off the peaks gently instead of turning harsh, so a tube watt seems to go further than a transistor watt. JJ Wyckoff of Enjoy the Music found the 102B handled loud peaks well beyond its rating without harsh distortion, and he heard it as "warm, relaxed and spacious." Potis found the 302B had "no overriding character that it superimposes on the music." Jolida suits listeners who want their first tube amp to be friendly and easy to live with.

The tubes in each model are the best guide to the range. The small 102B uses EL84s and makes modest power, so pair it with efficient speakers, as Wyckoff did. The 302B is the middle choice, and Potis heard it at its best with good small monitors such as the Silverline SR17. The 502B uses bigger tubes and more power, and Nels Ferré of TNT-Audio found it stronger than the 302B in bass and timing. His advice is simple. Choose the 302B for small monitors, the 502B for larger speakers played loud, or a 302B with a subwoofer. If your speakers lean bright, Allen told Wayne Donnelly the 202A was voiced for warmth with exactly those speakers in mind. Allen fitted Electro-Harmonix tubes because they rarely came back under warranty, and he encouraged owners to try others. Garrett Hongo of The Absolute Sound rolled Psvane EL84s into the small Glass FX-10 and heard a deeper soundstage.

Wyckoff, who owned an earlier Jolida 101, wrote that the 102B's circuit was cast in the mold of the smaller American amps of the late 1950s and early 1960s, from companies such as Eico and Pilot, whose amplifiers he called sought-after collector's items. Allen, who founded Jolida, designed its products in Maryland with a team of engineers, and every product got final assembly and testing there. Scott Faller noted that Allen had each power and output transformer custom wound on a core of German steel, and that the compact 102B weighed almost 19 pounds. Allen kept his attention on people new to tubes. He told Hongo that the high end had "priced itself completely out of the entry-level," so he designed the Glass Series, small stackable components whose tubes show through glass panels, starting with the FX-10 integrated in 2008. Hongo recommended it to anyone moving up from portable sound. Potis called the 302B "not just a good budget amplifier" but "a good amplifier period," and Ferré sent Allen a check for his review sample of the 502B.
